    Health & Safety Manager - Uitenhage

    General Job Description:

    This position is based Uitenhage South Africa.  Reporting directly to the Country Manager, this position is responsible for leading the core responsibilities for the Health and Safety aspects of the plant. The position is responsible for the establishing, managing and monitoring standards, processes, communications, training and systems for the site. To apply current health and safety legislation and best practices to the operations and working practices of the company, including continuous review of the health and safety legislation and assisting Corporate Health & Safety Practices.

    In this role you will utilize your experience and expertise to advice on all health and safety matters by developing and executing objectives for both self and others and the have the ability to affect short-term and long-term business metrics.  Responsible for monitoring the Company’s compliance with health and safety law and providing advice to both the company and the employees on the work environment.

    Member of the Health and Safety Committee and site champion.

    Role & Responsibilities:

    • First point of contact for site Health and Safety.
    • Ensure that the Health and Safety Policy is updated in response to changes in legislation and within the company.
    • Adequate provision of first-aid and welfare facilities and support.
    • Provision of suitable and current information and supervision concerning health and safety policies and practices.
    • Liaison as necessary with other organizations and relevant authorities, and assistance and cooperation concerning audits and remedial actions.
    • Surveillance and reporting on health and safety practices and systems.
    • To liaise with external bodies such as the Health and Safety Executive, Environmental Health.
    • To work in partnership with legal parties to contest claims against the Company.
    • To record and maintain accident statistics and provide weekly/monthly/annual reports.
    • To carry out appropriate in-house health and safety training sessions, e.g. display screen regulations, manual handling including all new starters, annual refresher training
    • Educate and ensure the business and managers on creating a safe workplace for all employees
    • Ensure the safe storage and use of articles and substances.
    • Ensure on appropriate assessment of risks to health and safety, and implementation of measures and arrangements identified as necessary from the assessments.
    • Provision of emergency procedures, first-aid facilities, safety signs, relevant protective clothing and equipment, and incident reporting to the relevant authorities.
    • Ensure the workplace satisfies health, safety and welfare requirements for ventilation, temperature, lighting, sanitary, washing and rest facilities.
    • Educate and ensure the prevention and precautions against, or adequate control of, exposure to hazardous substances, and danger from flammable, explosive, electrical, noise, radiation and manual handling risks.
    • Manage and advise line management on the investigation of accidents, incidents and dangerous occurrences and the measures to be taken to prevent reoccurrence.
    • Manage training support for the plant in respect of HSE topics
    • Other duties as assigned

    Education

    • Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health and Safety
    • NOSA Certificate or equivalent in HSE Management.
    • Previous experience in an automotive manufacturing environment essential

    Experience

    • 5-7 years related professional experience
    • Recognized as a subject matter expert.
    • Extensive knowledge of hazard/risk analysis to address moderate to highly complex health and safety issues.
    • English (fluency in reading, writing and speaking)

    • Excellent verbal, interpersonal & written communication skills
