Requirements

• Grade 12
• Accredited Firefighter 1 Certificate
• Accredited Hazmat Operations Certificate
• Wildland Firefighter 1 Certificate (advantageous)
• Respiratory protection (advantageous)
• First Aid Level 3 Certificate (in-dated)
• Medically fit
• Physical and mental fitness
• Code B Driver’s license
• No Criminal Record
• Note: Training programs successfully completed

Key Performance Areas

• Carries out firefighting and emergency operations under guidance, mentorship and supervision of seniors and officers in charge.
• Preparing for emergency incidents and protection duties to reduce the incidents and severity of fires and providing a safer environment for fire-fighters and communities.
• Preparing for emergency incidents by ensuring that equipment is safe, available and in sound working order for operational efficiency at emergency incidents as well as to maintain a safe and hygienic working environment.
• Performs basic administrative functions to ensure that adequate records are maintained.
• Managing training and skills development and the transfer of skills and knowledge

SPECIAL CONDITIONS ATTACHED TO THE POSITION:

• Specific physical attributes, which can become essential for the execution of tasks /duties inherent in the job design, necessitates that the incumbent be physically fit and able bodied.
• Deals with people under stress
• Performs heavy lifting and strenuous physical activity in confined areas and at elevated temperatures whilst wearing personal protective clothing and equipment weighing  25 kilograms
• Required to work in hazardous locations at considerable above grade elevation
• Faces exposure to carcinogenic dusts such as asbestos, toxic substances such as hydrogen cyanide, acids, carbon monoxide, organic solvents and ionising radiation either through inhalation or skin contact.
• Enter structures on fire wearing protective bunker gear and breathing apparatus and carrying a variety of service related to tools and equipment.
• Faces exposure to infectious agents such as Hepatitis and HIV
• Makes rapid transition from rest to near maximal exertion without warm up periods.
• Exposure to grotesque sights and smells associated with major trauma and burn victims
• This post currently requires incumbent to work shifts.
• Must be prepared to work at any fire station within the area of jurisdiction, as determined by the Chief Fire Officer.
