FEM is seeking to appoint a Junior System Engineer (Technical) within its IT Infrastructure/Operations division, based at its Head Office in Johannesburg. Reporting to the IT Manager, with oversight from the Chief Information Officer, this role is responsible for providing structured, hands-on technical support and operational engineering capability across the organisation’s IT infrastructure. The purpose of the role is to ensure that systems remain available, secure, and operate efficiently within defined standards, procedures, and best practices.
The successful candidate will support core infrastructure components, including servers across Windows and Linux environments, end-user devices such as desktops, laptops, and mobile devices, as well as network components including switches, Wi-Fi, and connectivity solutions. The role requires the execution of standard operating procedures and runbooks, as well as conducting regular system health checks and ongoing monitoring to ensure optimal performance and stability.
In addition, the Junior System Engineer will be responsible for managing technical incidents and problems within agreed service level agreements. This includes resolving first- and second-line incidents, escalating more complex issues to senior engineers where necessary, and assisting with basic root cause analysis. Accurate logging of incidents and proper documentation of resolutions will be essential to maintain service quality and continuous improvement.
The successful candidate will also support project-related activities by assisting senior engineers with infrastructure deployments, system upgrades, migrations, and technology refresh initiatives. This exposure will provide valuable development opportunities within a dynamic IT environment.
The minimum requirements of the position are a bachelor’s degree in computer science, Information Technology, or have equivalent practical industry experience. A valid driver’s license is required. Candidate should have between one and three years of experience in information technology, with exposure to systems support, junior systems administration, or technical operations environments.
