    Laboratory Technologist (Contract)

    Requirements for the job:

    • National Diploma and in Biomedical Technology or a Bachelor of Health Sciences in Medical Laboratory Sciences (BHSc) or a Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Health Sciences.
    • Registration with the HPCSA, except for holders of a BSc in Health Sciences.
    • Fluency in English.
    • Good communication (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills.
    • Computer Literacy skills.
    • Decision making and problem-solving skills.
    • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
    • Minimum 2 years post-qualification experience in a Human Biomedical Laboratory (BSL2) or Clinical Research Laboratory setting.
    • BSL2 Laboratory Health and Safety practices.
    • Ability to use a micropipette and light microscope.
    • A valid code 8 driver’s license and ability to drive.

    The following will be advantageous:

    • Afrikaans and/or IsiXhosa.
    • Knowledge of Good Clinical Practice and/or Good Clinical Laboratory Practice and ISO standards.
    • Knowledge of blood processing procedures for immunological end point assays e.g., PBMC processing, Flow Cytometry as indicated in the Job description.
    • Experience with laboratory information management systems and IATA regulations.

    Responsibilities:

    • Duties will include receipt and processing of human specimens, cryopreservation and storage, shipment of specimens and specialized immunology assays and procedures.
    • To perform laboratory procedures and quality control in accordance with standard operating procedures under the supervision of the laboratory manager and academic team leader in support of scientific goals of clinical research.
    • General facility maintenance and housekeeping duties, laboratory study supervision, on-call duties, environmental and equipment monitoring and good clinical laboratory practice.
