    Lecturer in Nutrition (nGAP) (P003794)

    PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

    • The Lecturer in Nutrition and Dietetics will contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, research, and community engagement within the Dietetics and Nutrition program.
    • The appointee will be recruited and appointed according to the guidelines of the DHET’s New Generation of Academics Programme (nGAP) phase 11. The appointee will be required to register for and complete a doctoral degree and gradually be integrated as permanent academic staff member within the six years of the nGAP development trajectory.
    • Teaching responsibilities may include one or more of the following areas: therapeutic nutrition, community nutrition, food service management, and nutrition research.
    • The nGAP is a national initiative aimed at developing the next generation of academics through a structured six-year developmental programme, addressing historical under-representation in the higher education sector. Preference will be given to black (African, Coloured and Indian), female, and persons with disabilities, in line with the Employment Equity Act and NWU Employment Equity Plan. Applicants must be South African Citizens, 40 years or younger of age at the time of appointment.

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Teaching and Learning including postgraduate supervision

    • Teach at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, including supervision of MSc students.
    • Prepare and present lectures, tutorials, practical sessions, assessments, and workshops.
    • Develop and review teaching and learning materials.
    • Participate in internal and external moderation of assessments.
    • Engage in professional development activities related to teaching and learning.

    Research, Innovation, artistic or creative activity

    • Conduct focused research in Nutrition / Dietetics.
    • Publish research outputs in accredited peer-reviewed journals.
    • Present research at scientific conferences.
    • Participate in and contribute to research teams.
    • Develop and maintain local, national, and international research collaborations.

    Leadership, management and service to the university

    • Participate in School and Faculty committees.
    • Contribute to administrative, academic, and professional activities of the University.
    • Engage in capacity-building, mentoring, and outreach activities that enhance the University’s profile.

    Social Responsiveness

    • Participate in community engagement and service-learning initiatives.
    • Apply nutrition expertise to address public health challenges.
    • Engage in scholarly, civic, and professional community activities.

    Minimum requirements

    • A Master of Science degree (NQF level 9) in Nutrition or Dietetics. The master’s degree must be achieved with an average of 70% or above. Please attach proof of the results in your application.
    • Registration at the HPCSA in the category of Dietetics (DT) or Nutrition (NT).
    • Applicants must be SA citizens and 40 years or younger of age at the time of appointment.

    ADDED ADVANTAGES & PREFERENCES:

    • Membership of the Association of Dietetics in South Africa (ADSA) or Nutrition Society of South Africa (NSSA).

    A minimum of one (1) year active involvement and participation in teaching and learning, including the following aspects:

    • reflective narrative on teaching philosophy, teaching strategies and goals, and subject knowledge (ca. 1000 words);
    • effective participation in teaching and learning;
    • design and implementation of learning environments (face-to-face and blended learning);
    • use of LMS/online platforms or other teaching-learning technologies;
    • effective assessment practices;
    • conference and workshop attendance in the relevant discipline and teaching and learning.
    • Participation in previous research activities.
    • Conference presentations and/or publication of peer-reviewed scientific article/s.
    • Demonstrated involvement in school and faculty committees, contributions to advising students and recruitment activities.

    KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:                                     

    • Ability and experience to work from an evidence-based approach to nutrition.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
    • Ability to function in a multilingual academic environment.
    • Computer literacy (Microsoft office, e-mails, power point, software for data analysis).
    • Knowledge of assessment theory and practice to enhance student performance.
    • Research methodology and academic writing skills.
    • Strong analytical, organisational, and problem-solving skills.

    KEY BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES:

    • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
    • Effective time management and ability to work under pressure.
    • Self-motivation, adaptability, and critical thinking.
    • Effective use of e-learning platforms and digital tools.
    • The ability to function well individually and as part of a team/subject group.
    • A high level of professional and ethical conduct.
