    Job description

    RESEARCH

    • Undertake research within the Unit for Environment Sciences and Management on issues of Geology and Soil Sciences
    • Supervision of post-graduate students.
    • Produce research output through international and national accredited articles.
    • Fundraising for research.

    TEACHING

    • Teaching at undergraduate/postgraduate level in Geology

    COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

    • Application of expertise in communities to address local identified issues of Geology/Soil Sciences

    ADMINISTRATION

    • Administrative tasks including curriculum development

    KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:

    • Essential: Geology
    • Essential: Petrology and/or economic geology
    • Desirable: Additional knowledge in structural geology
    • Essential: Practical geological/palaeontological skills
    • Essential: Field work experience/mapping
    • Essential: Lab experience (e.g. XRF/XRD

    KEY BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES:

    • Independent researcher
    • Project management abilities
    • Ability to teach diverse groups and in diverse environments
    • Work under pressure
    • Team player
    • Good communicator
    • Good writing skills
    • Problem solving
    • Demonstration of language proficiency to function optimally in the various multilingual environments of the NWU

    Minimum requirements

    • Master’s degree in Geology (specialised in petrology/economic geology)
    • 1 year experience in teaching
    • 1 year experience in tutoring
    • 3 years experience in conducting research and proof of publication record in accredited journals
    • Accreditation with SACNASP– desirable
    • membership with the GSSA – desirable
