    Manager (Food Safety)

    Job Purpose
    To deliver an efficient, effective, food safety support service in eThekwini Municipality in accordance  with relevant legislation and department policy.

    Key Responsibility Areas

    • Ensure the provision of highest possible standards in respect to food safety control.
    • Plans, leads, organise, controls and directs human resource line management functions and  asset control.
    • Makes input on food safety.
    • Promote and develop food safety projects, programmes and activities.
    • Manages and provides input to food safety manager.
    • Upholds health and safety standards for the department.
    • Ensuring statistical and other information is submitted to the food safety manager.
    • Deputises for the food safety manager in his/her absence.
    • Undertakes related assignments.

    • Communication- The capacity to listen attentively, grasp issues, present information in a  clear manner and respond appropriately to verbal and written communication of others.
    • Attention to Detail- Ability to scrutinise own work and that of others to ensure accuracy and  compliance with the relevant municipal standards.
    • Planning and Organising- The ability to plan activities within specific timeframes and then to  execute these activities according to plan.
    • Evaluation and Research- Use of appropriate evaluation and research methods, in  partnership with stakeholders, to determine the outcomes, impact and effectiveness of  Environmental Health action.
    • Information Management- Displays an ability to collect, review and analyze information  pertaining to Environmental Health, identify trends, and report on them to all stakeholders.
    • Advocacy / Negotiation- Ability to promote Municipal Health Services.
    • Food Control- Ensuring food safety for human consumption.
    • Project Management- Ability to plan, co-ordinate and control the tasks of self and others to  deliver projects and tasks to the required specification and within budget and schedule.
    • Financial Management- Drives optimisation of financial management of the municipality  through use of standard operating procedure.
    • Service Delivery Orientation- The ability to explore and implement new ways of delivering services that contribute to the improvement of municipal processes to achieve municipal 
    • goals.
    • Action and Outcome Orientation- Display of high work ethic in setting and achieving  challenging goals, meeting deadlines and keeping promises. It manifests itself in one’s ability to stay focused on tasks, to be energetic, persistent and reliable.
    • Coaching and Mentoring- The ability to assess skills, performance, and potential of  subordinates and to encourage their development with the view of optimising their talent

    Essential Requirements

    • Bachelor of Technology Degree or Bachelor’s Degree (NQF Level 7) in Environmental Health.
    • Registration as an Environmental Health Practitioner with the Health Professions Council of  South Africa.
    • Peace Officer certificate, to be obtained within 6 months of the date of appointment.
    •  Valid motor vehicle driving license.
    • 5 years of relevant experience.

    Preferred Requirements

    • Postgraduate qualification (NQF level 8) in Environmental Health.
    • 6 years of relevant experience.
