    Nursing Services Manager | Registered Nurse

    An exciting opportunity has become available for a Nursing Services Manager at our Noordhoek Manor facility.

    This exclusive retirement/lifestyle village managed by the well respected Faircape Group has a vacancy for a Nursing Services Manager, a registered Nurse, to take control of the entire healthcare facility. The Nursing Services Manager implements and oversees all clinical and nursing processes and care of the healthcare facility with the assistance of Shift Leaders who manage the shifts. Further to that, the Nursing Services Manager liaises with the MDT, medical professionals and families of residents. The Nursing Services Manager also plays a pivotal role in the marketing of the facility to ensure full occupancy at all times.

    Specific duties include but is not limited to the following:
    Staffing and Staff Management

    • Manage Shift Leaders directly and all other staff indirectly
    • Review job descriptions with HR when needed
    • Drive performance appraisals once a year with all staff in the facility
    • Do interviews for all staff replacements at the facility and recommend best candidates
    • Ensure full staffing on each shift with specific emphasis on the proper deployment of all staff members.
    • Approve all staff rosters
    • Manage induction / orientation process and welcoming of all new staff
    • Approve leave requests
    • Approve shift change requests
    • Oversee and monitor agency and privately employed care and nursing staff – ensure all procedure are followed take action when needed
    • Liaise with HR regarding disciplinary matters and issue warnings when needed
    • Attend CCMA with HR when needed
    • Continuous liaising with HR on any employee relations matters
    • Have regular (weekly) staff meetings to discuss issues at hand and allow for feedback from all.

    Training

    • Attend relevant management and clinical education programmes
    • Address ongoing clinical skills and training needs within the facility with staff and inform Training Manager
    • Encourage staff development and ongoing education
    • Implement training programmes to new and existing staff as per specific training plan
    • Ensure all training competencies have been completed and ensure all newly appointed staff completes the competency tests

    Admissions and Discharges

    • Oversee the entire admission and discharge process which is managed by the Shift leader and allocation of beds according to availability, diagnosis
    • Interview prospective residents and their families, obtain all relevant medical reports as per company procedure and provide counselling where required
    • Oversee that all documentation for admission, progress and discharges in sub acute facility (applicable only in facilities where a sub acute license is in place)
    • Oversee the discharge process with family and residents and ensure discharge plan in place where necessary
    • Final sign off for all admissions and discharges

    Resident and Family Interaction

    • Have full knowledge and communicate types and levels of services offered within the facility (ie long term and/or subacute) to interested persons enquiring about the facility
    • Interface with families regularly and where support, assistance or decision making input is required
    • Attend family meetings with the Shift Leader
    • Resolve complaints from residents and family members
    • Develop a professional clinical and caring relationship with all residents receiving care
    • Provide effective education, advice and counselling to the resident about the matters relating to the facility, maintenance and/or staff
    • Be able to discuss with residents their individual care plan and aspects of their health, condition and prognosis where possible.
    • Refer resident to appropriate medical professional where necessary

    Residents and Services Offered

    • Communicate regularly with Village Manager and assist with healthcare matters regarding village residents. Discuss any issues that may overlap with healthcare
    • Attend bi weekly MDT meetings to discuss lonely and vulnerable residents and implement action plans

    Nursing and Care

    Handover:

    • Attend and supervise the nursing handover procedure daily as per the policy
    • Be aware of all resident information exchanged during handover
    • Use handover to communicate important notices to staff

    Nursing and Care:

    • Strive to achieve optimal level of care for all residents, and ensure staff adhere to scope of practice and best practice regulations
    • Implement ethical guidelines and provisions of relevant legislation in caregiving in the facility
    • Liaise with the Senior Nursing Manager and Faircape Doctors regarding any health/medical problems concerning residents if their assigned medical practitioner is not suitable.
    • Inform the Senior Nursing Manager of any situations concerning resident’s care that requires intervention or follow up
    • Review care plans with Shift Leader when necessary
    • Manage emergency care response procedure
    • Refer any residents requiring additional care to the appropriate hospital or other facility or medical practitioner involved.
    • Liaise with on site OT, Dietician and social worker in terms of resident care where necessary
    • Monitor nursing/care documentation to maintain high standard of documentation to avoid risk resulting from poor documentation

    Risk Management and Emergencies

    • Supervise implementation of infection control procedures during any outbreak or suspected infection occurring
    • Record and action any health related incidents that occur in the healthcare and village and report to Claremont office as per company procedure
    • Attend monthly H&S meetings and take action as needed
    • Do H&S checks on iauditor according to procedure
    • Plan and supervise fire drills and evacuation plans
    • Be contactable at all times by means of company cell phone and respond to emergencies
    • Inform Legal Deptartment at Claremont office of any possible conflicts and follow up
    • Implement plans, prepare the facility and be present at all inspections (DOH and DSD)

    Administration, Reporting and ECP

    • Prepare reports and submissions in line with responsibilities such as the weekly report on the facility to the Nursing Manager
    • Read and investigate all incidents and submit to the MDT as finalized
    • Monitor and approve all requisitions via the Healthcare Administrator to Claremont office
    • Communicate and report to support team and Claremont HOD’s on relevant matters
    • Report to and liaise with CEO directly
    • Oversee and manage ECP care plans and nursing records on the system
    • Monitor the charting on ECP via spot checks and discuss with Shift Leaders
    • Inform Senior Nursing Services Manager and IT of problems with ECP online notification, jotform as per policy
    • Oversee services of meals, laundry, cleaning, maintenance, H&S and report any anomalies to the relevant support manager

    Financial

    • Manage available resources efficiently
    • Provide rationale for any additional cost requirements
    • Manage consumables and equipment and records of utilisation.
    • Liaise with Accounts Department of Claremont office where required
    • Negotiate tariffs in conjunction with the Senior Nursing Services Manager and the Financial Manager for healthcare admissions based on availability vs demand and the required level of care of a resident
    • Oversee expenditure of the facility and inform Financial Manager at Claremont office of situations or issues pertaining to tariffs, admissions, payment of accounts, ordering of consumables, etc.

    Overall Management of the Healthcare Facility

    • Ensure that the courtyards are prepared daily by the maintenance assistant - cushions on chairs, umbrellas open, clean and inviting.
    • Ensure the coffee shop is operational and manned to ensure quick and efficient service to the patients and their visitors. Oversee the overall cleanliness of the entire facility at all times and liaise with respective operational manager regarding any concerns
    • Oversee the comprehensive management of the laundry service and liaise with respective operational manager regarding any concerns

    Stock

    • Ensure all assets in the facility are tagged and placed on the asset list
    • Annual stock take of all stock
    • Manage consumable stock daily, oversee proper stock control, billing and the ordering process
    • Oversee all linen stock control
    • Ensure all stock is handled with care and manage wastage and neglecthe

    Requirements
    Qualifications - Relevant nursing qualification as Registered Nurse, SANC registered

    Experience - 5 years of experience in nursing, experience in geriatrics advantageous, experience in a similar leadership position, recent hospital experience

    Skills and Knowledge - Strong interpersonal skills, professional communication, managerial skills, making sound decisions, computer literate, fluent in English. Dementia care, frail care, sub acute, palliative care, rehab, strokes

    Working Hours - Normal working days are Monday to Friday, 07h00 to 17h00 with a 60 minute lunch break. As the manager of the facility, you are required to be available after hours to tend to emergencies

    Benefits
    Salary on offer from R40,000 Cost to Company. 20 days of annual leave and exposure to both internal and external training. All Nursing Service Managers receive a company cellphone and are reimbursed for business related travel at the prevailing SARS rate.
