RESPONSIBILITIES:
- The incumbent will be responsible for maintaining a healthy and safe work environment for personnel, students, and visitors at the University of Pretoria, and assisting the Institution in complying with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and associated legislation.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:
- A relevant National 3-year Diploma (NQF Level 6) in Occupational Health and Safety, Safety Management, Environmental Management, Risk Management, Occupational Hygiene, Health and Safety Management, Industrial Safety Management, Disaster Management, or a related qualification, together with a minimum of two (2) years' proven experience as an Occupational Health and Safety Officer, Occupational Health and Safety Coordinator, or Disaster Management Practitioner; OR
- Grade 12 (National Senior Certificate), together with a minimum of four (4) years' proven experience as an Occupational Health and Safety Officer, Occupational Health and Safety Coordinator, or Disaster Management Practitioner.
REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):
- Knowledge of occupational health and safety investigations;
- Knowledge of relevant legislation and regulations;
- Computer literacy;
- Ability to deal with high-stress situations calmly and effectively;
- Ability to develop plans to accomplish work operations and objectives;
- Ability to explore alternatives and negotiate solutions to achieve outcomes that gain the support and acceptance of all parties;
- Ability to develop and maintain effective relationships to encourage communication and teamwork;
- Ability to convey information clearly and concisely.
ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:
- A valid Code B driver's licence.
- OHS legal liability or related course ;
- Train-the-Trainer (ITIS or equivalent) certification ;
- SAMTECH / SAMTRAC ;
- Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment and auditing courses ;
- Incident investigation course;
- Two (2) years' experience within a higher education institution;
- Registration with a recognised professional body, such as the South African Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (Saiosh) or the South African Council for the Project and Construction Management Professions (SACPCMP).

The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent’s level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED and UMVUZO medical aid schemes and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
