    Packaging Technology and Infrastructure Specialist

    • Coca-Cola Beverages Africa (CCBA) presents an exciting opportunity for a Packaging Technology and Infrastructure Specialist, to join the Midrand team at CCBA. The role will report to the Industrial Control & Automation Manager.

    Key Purpose 

    • The Packaging Technology and Infrastructure Specialist is responsible for establishing and standardising packaging technology infrastructure across all packaging formats to ensure consistent, reliable, and high-performance manufacturing operations. The role provides expert technical leadership in automation, control platforms, and packaging equipment design while driving integration with SCADA, MES, and digital performance systems. This specialist supports plants with advanced troubleshooting, infrastructure optimisation, and technology upgrades, ensuring that all packaging systems meet safety, quality, and efficiency standards. The position plays a critical role in capital projects, commissioning, and training, enabling CCBSA to deliver world-class packaging performance through robust, scalable, and future-ready technology solutions.

    Key Duties & Responsibilities    
    Key Outcomes 

    Technology Development and Standardization

    • Define packaging technology infrastructure standards for all packaging formats (PET, canning, returnables).
    • Collaborate with OEMs and engineering teams to ensure standardization of automation and control platforms.
    • Evaluate and approve new packaging technology solutions in alignment with CCBSA’s manufacturing strategy

    Infrastructure Support and Optimization

    • Provide subject matter expertise for infrastructure upgrades, line conversions, and equipment modifications.
    • Support plant engineering and automation teams in resolving packaging technology performance issues.
    • Lead root cause analysis (RCA) and implement technical solutions for chronic packaging line issues.

    Integration and Connectivity

    • Oversee integration of packaging infrastructure with SCADA, MES, and line monitoring systems.
    • Ensure seamless data capture from packaging lines to enable OEE tracking and predictive insights.
    • Support development and rollout of digital packaging performance dashboards.

    Project Implementation and Technical Oversight

    • Provide packaging infrastructure input in capital projects and line upgrade initiatives.
    • Oversee commissioning and acceptance testing of packaging systems from a technology and control standpoint.
    • Ensure all projects meet safety, quality, and operational efficiency standards.

    Collaboration and Technical Leadership

    • Work closely with plant Process Control Engineers, Project Engineers, and OEM vendors.
    • Collaborate with OT, process automation, and cybersecurity teams to ensure secure connectivity.
    • Train plant teams on new technology standards, troubleshooting practices, and diagnostics tools.

    Skills, Experience & Education    
    Education

    • Bachelor’s degree in Mechatronics, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Industrial Automation
    • Additional certifications in Packaging Technology or Control Systems Engineering (advantageous)

    Experience

    • Minimum 5–8 years of experience in packaging engineering, process automation, or FMCG manufacturing
    • Strong background in high-speed packaging lines, preferably in beverage or food production
    • Hands-on experience with SCADA, PLCs, and packaging machine interfaces
    • Proven involvement in capital projects, technology commissioning, and troubleshooting packaging systems

    Skills

    • Expertise in packaging equipment infrastructure (fillers, cappers, labellers, conveyors, shrink-wrappers, etc.)
    • Advanced understanding of PLC programming, SCADA, and control instrumentation
    • Familiarity with MES integration, data historians, and line monitoring systems
    • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
    • Proficiency in AutoCAD, E-Plan, or similar tools for electrical and control schematics
    • Effective communication, stakeholder engagement, and project coordination abilities
