    PC Technician

    Minimum Requirements:

    • Bachelor’s Degree (NQF7) or B. Tech in Information Technology, Computer Science, or equivalent.
    • At least five (5) years post qualification experience in IT support preferably in an academic institution.

     Additional Requirements:

    Knowledge of:

    • Operating Systems: Windows; MacOS
    • Applications software: MS Office suite, Statistical software
    • Antivirus applications and virus removal tools
    • Technical skills and understanding of key aspects of desktop support
    • Computer hardware and software troubleshooting
    • Basic network management and troubleshooting
    • e-learning platforms
    • Data analysis

    Summary of duties:

    The successful candidate will be expected to:

    • Ensure that faculty computer laboratories are maintained in a fully functional and safe condition.
    • Perform preventative maintenance and repairs on computer equipment and peripherals and conduct regular physical checks on computer equipment.
    • Undertake and coordinate installation, repairs, and maintenance of computer software and hardware in faculty computer laboratories.
    • Take responsibility for and supervise network usage in the computer laboratory.
    • Troubleshoot network errors, identify communication problems, and ensure appropriate response.
    • Provide computer support to departments within the faculty, assist in fault finding and troubleshooting tasks, and assist with general set up of departmental computers.
    • Assist with administrative duties such as lab timetables, and venue set-up for workshops, lectures, practicals
    • Maintain audio-visual and presentation equipment.
    • Keep users up to date by communicating and demonstrating IT platforms used at DUT.
    • Provide a consultancy service, help desk, and technical advice to students including configuration of computer equipment, installation of software, and use of software packages.
    • Liaise with external suppliers and coordinate requisitions for the purchase of items as per DUT policy.
    • Maintain and regularly update asset register for computers and network equipment in laboratories.
    • Assists the faculty in the implementation of policies, procedures, and systems for effective running of laboratories.

    Additional Recommendations:

    • Must be able to plan and work independently and outside normal working hours when required.
    • Ability to show initiative and to work independently and in a team environment.
    • Must be familiar with DUT procurement policies and procedures.
    • Familiarity with DUT’s ITS web interface for students.
    • Effective communication skills, people management skills, and adherence to workplace etiquette.
    • Strong interpersonal skills.
    • Ability to conduct technical investigations, troubleshooting, and repairs to computer components.
