Principal: Electrical, Energy & C&I at De Beers Group

Job Description:

The purpose of this role is to be the overarching subject matter expert and owner for Electrical and C&I Engineering within De Beers Group, driving the delivery of the Upstream Priority Areas as linked to the De Beers Group Strategy.

• Execute discipline specific projects in line with De Beers Upstream priority areas and identified operational requirements.
• Provide expert technical Support for both Managed Operations and Non-Managed Joint Venture Operations on the following:
• Roll-out, embedment and review of relevant standards, frameworks and best practices, managing compliance issues within the relevant managerial and governance frameworks.
• Provide SME input to Electrical and C&I service strategies, Work Management and A&I to improve reliability and the overall effectiveness and efficiency of the fleet at an operational and organisational level.
• Review and development of project specifications and design criteria are reflective of minimum requirements and safe and cost-effective manner.
• Design and implementation of electrical and instrumentation systems that comply with industry standards and regulations.
• Support the sites through defect elimination investigations of highly complex critical /persistent equipment issues as well as risk studies & significant projects.
• Development of asset and aligned services strategies focusing on the 1-5yr window, aligned to the Life of Asset Plans of the operations within Operating Model principles.
• Facilitate continuous improvement and modernisation at operations aligned to the defined priority areas.
• Drive people development within the discipline by identifying knowledge gaps, providing coaching, identifying potential employees, and planning succession for critical roles.
• Assurance on behalf of De Beers Group regarding the following:
• Provide support on first-line assurance on relevant standards.
• Review inputs, activities and cost (Capital and Operational cost) for Electrical, Controls & Instrumentation service strategies as defined by operational teams as an input into the business planning cycle and projects.

Qualifications:

• Bachelors/Honours degree or equivalent in Electrical Engineering or Relevant Degree.
• Professional Registration with ECSA
• A South African Department of Minerals issued Government Certificate of Competency (Mechanical or Electrical) will be a distinct advantage (Preferred)

Technical Knowledge and Experience required:

• Minimum 8 year’s relevant experience.
• LoW III: Systems - Discerns trends to develop and improve existing systems. Requires the ability to use data to discern trends, identify the difference between special and systemic cause. Can include developing systems within a specialist area.
• Technical Knowledge and Compliance
• Demonstrated knowledge of operational complexities experienced as an engineer in a mining and processing operation.
• Good understanding of applicable national and international standards

Commercial:

• Knowledge of tender processes, contractor administration, and financial progress monitoring

Management:

• Experience in a management position, including the successful strategic management of a large sub-functional team.
• Knowledge of safety and risk management processes

Technical Skills

• Solid understanding of key technical concepts relating to equipment and supplier capability
• Demonstrated maintenance and operational support experience mineral processing or heavy industrial environment.
• Demonstrated experience in systems with voltages up to 132 kV
• Demonstrable balance between theoretical electrical engineering and practical electrical system maintenance, operations and management
• Experience in Electrical and C&I discipline project management experience in small and large projects with a good understanding of discipline interfaces
• Solve technical and operational issues in cooperation with relevant stakeholders.
• Plan, Lead, Organise and Control technical solution delivery using a matrix of internal and external providers and stakeholders.
• Manage, monitors and drives project activities.
• Proactively identifies, mitigates or escalate risks.
• Optimise performance levels of assets through actively monitoring their operation and creating solutions to encourage sustainable use inclusive conducting analysis, data mining and modelling
• Provides consistent outstanding behaviour in relation to safety practices with an understanding of the importance of safety.
