    Project Manager: Fintech / Mobile Money

    Mission/ Core purpose of the Job:  


    • The Project manager oversees a combination of Traditional waterfall projects as well as Agile way of work projects. The Project Manager is responsible to oversee the planning, control and the successful delivery of outputs of medium to large, complex/cross-functional projects in the approved MTN Fintech/Mobile Money portfolio. The incumebent will drive and contribute to the delivey of the strategic objectives of the Insurance portifolio through the various projects managed.

    Key Performance Areas: 

    Stakeholder engagement:

    • Facilitate workshops and meetings with internal and/or external stakeholders
    • Build and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders of projects
    • Build relationship with project executive sponsors and/or project owners to ensure speedy resolution of escalations.           

    Manage complex/cross-functional projects 

    • Define the appropriate project governance and controls 
    • Define and confirm the project scope with relevant stakeholders & 
    • Conduct project planning, give input into and integrate workstream plans and monitor project progress against plan
    • Facilitate the allocation of resources and manage resources across workstreams
    • Facilitate procurement requirements for the project
    • Manage the project budget, where applicable
    • Report project progress (with recommendations for Risk Management and Issue Resolution)
    • Ensure project risks are identified and mitigation plans are put in place
    • Facilitate change management to support successful execution of the project
    • Facilitation of Go to Market plans across multiple channels
    • Manage and resolve risks and issues 
    • Co-ordinate the project and workstream integration points and interdependencies
    • Approve (or reject) change requests per delegation of authority
    • Recommend on project launch readiness 
    • Manage Stakeholder engagement and communication for the project
    • Validate deliverables (outputs) to quality standards and the project's “outcome” with relevant stakeholders
    • Oversee Post Implementation Reviews after launch, and feedback of lessons learned to relevant stakeholders

    Agile projects

    • Guide the team and organisation on how to use Agile/Scrum practices and values to delight customers.
    • Guide the team on how to get the most of our self-organisation.
    • Guide the team on self-organising to fill in the intentional gaps left in the Agile/Scrum frameworks.
    • Assessing the Scrum Maturity of the team in the Business unit and coaching the team to higher levels of maturity, at a pace that is sustainable and comfortable for the team.
    • Facilitating getting the work done without coercion, assigning, or dictating the work.
    • Supporting and educating the Product Owner, especially on grooming and maintaining the product backlog.
    • Enable the removal of obstacles to project delivery
    • Facilitate planning, daily stand-ups, sprint/iteration reviews including demos, and retrospectives for each project
    • Manage dependencies between project teams, third parties and other internal teams 
    • Escalate delivery issues and risks as they arise
    • Validate the use of standard testing practices by project teams to ensure quality 


    • Removing impediments or guiding the team to remove impediments by finding the right personnel to remove the impediment.
    • Building a trusting and safe environment where problems can be raised without fear of blame, retribution, or being judged, with an emphasis on healing and problem-solving.
    • Facilitating discussion, decision making, and conflict resolution.
    • Assisting with internal and external communication, improving transparency, and radiating information.
    • Providing all support to the team using a servant leadership style whenever possible and leading by example.


    • Ensure relevant project governance is identified and communicated on the projects
    • Adhere to Programme Management Office governance frameworks are adhered to.


    • Compile relevant project & portfolio reporting
    • Ensure Project & Portfolio management tool is updated as and when require

    • Project Charter / scope
    • Project Organisation 
    • Delivery Strategy 
    • Project Plan 
    • Human Resources Plan
    • Stakeholder Engagement Plan 
    • Communication Plan 
    • Product Descriptions 
    • Project Risk Register 
    • Project Issue Log 
    • Change Management Plan
    • Go to Market plans
    • Training Plan
    • Closure Plan including Lessons Learned  

    Encourage and support skills development:

    • Actively contribute to the company's project management community by running internal training on project management methodology
    • Give input into use of project management methodology at communities of practice
    • Develop and mentor talent and those participating in the learnership programme

    Minimum Requirements - 


    • Minimum 3-year degree/diploma in relevant discipline

    Certification in -

    • Project Management Professional (PMP) or PRINCE2 Practitioner
    • Agile certification is essential

    Minimum of 6 years’ experience - 

    • Minimum 6 years managing projects through the end to end lifecycle using PMBOK/PRINCE2/ AGILE methodologies in financial services with reference to specific insurance intiatives implemented on digital platforms as well as other traditional channels.
    • OR  mobile apps within the banking environment or financial services sector having managed all development, digital and technical initiatives focused on customer acquisition, customer retention, payments, eCommerce and building market places.
    • Supervising project teams
    • Working in a medium to large organization
    • In depth knowledge of the FAIS Act, Short Term Insurance Act, POPI and other applicable insurance sector legislation 
    • Sound financial acumen
    • Product and market development experience and knowledge 
    • Coordination of internal resources and third parties/vendors on multiple projects

    Agile Experience

    • Experience is playing the Scrum Master role for at least two years with a software development team that was diligently applying Scrum principles, practices, and theory.
    • Knowledge of other Agile approaches
    • Awareness and experience with widely successful Agile techniques: User Stories, ATDD, TDD, Continuous Integration, Continuous Testing, Pairing, Automated Testing.
    • The experience in applying a wide variety of well-documented patterns and techniques for filling in the intentional gaps left in the Scrum approach
