    Senior Lecturer / Lecturer (M000984)

     

    Job description

    PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:

    • A Lecturer/Senior Lecturer employee is expected to make significant contributions to the teaching effort of a department, school, faculty or other organisational unit or an interdisciplinary area. An academic at this level is also expected to play a major role in scholarship, research and/or professional activities.

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Teaching and learning:

    • Engaged teaching and learning on both under- and post graduate levels.
    • Develop study material, course and curriculum material and facilitate contact sessions.
    • Internal and external moderation and assessment.
    • The teaching of undergraduate and postgraduate students.

    Research and Innovation:

    • Publish in accredited journals.
    • Conference proceedings, research mentorship and serve in research committees and bodies.
    • Supervision of post graduate students; internal and external examination of post graduate research dissertations and/or theses.
    • Participation in the applicable research entity and publication of articles.
    • Independent research and sharing of expertise with diverse communities of practice and enquiry.
    • Sourcing of research funds.

    Academic Leadership, Management and Administration:

    • Assist in the management activities of the school and stakeholder relations.
    • Introduction of the 3rd stream income.
    • Participate in faculty and school committees.

    Social Responsiveness:

    • Maintain involvement in community engagement as a scholarly practice.
    • Execute activities by which discipline-based skills and knowledge are made relevant to the community.

    Minimum requirements

    Senior Lecturer:

    • A PhD (NQF level 10) in Tourism Development with a focus in Local Economic Development, Tourism Theories and Internalisation of tourism.
    • A minimum of 3 years’ teaching and learning experience at university level.
    • Publication(s) in an accredited journal.
    • Post-graduate supervision.

    Lecturer:

    • A master’s degree (NQF level 9) in Tourism Development with a focus in Local Economic Development, Tourism Theories and Internalisation of tourism.
    • A minimum of 2 years’ teaching and learning experience at university level.

    RECOMMENDATIONS / ADDED ADVANTAGES:

    • For Lecturer position, the candidate must be studying towards a PhD.
    • Currently lecturing with industry experience.
    • Demonstrate independence and initiative in research and in applied or creative work. 

    KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:

    • Have an in-depth knowledge of various tourism theories and their applications.
    • Have a good understanding of LED integration in tourism.
    • Have knowledge of the culinary and food-beverage module.
    • Have skills in incorporating ICT in Teaching & Learning and Research.
    • Have a strong understanding of international tourism and be able to apply case studies.
    • Have completed/engaged in skills development workshops.
    • Have been part of designing effective, engaging courses, learning materials, and curricula, often aligning with pedagogical, learner-centric strategies.
    • Have the ability to conduct, publish, and integrate research to keep teaching relevant.
    • Be able to use statistics to evaluate student performance and improve learning outcomes.
    • Good record of postgraduate (Honours/equivalent) supervision.
    • Ability to teach different fields of study in tourism and hospitality.
    • Ability to run 3rd stream income or short courses and research as part of Community Engagement.
    • A proven commitment to teaching and learning, including a willingness to participate in students’ educational development and well-being.

    • Have good planning and organising skills.
    • Good at time management.
