Senior Lecturer/Lecturer: Structural Engineering (Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment: Department of Civil Engineering Technology) (Re-advert) at University of Johannesburg

Job Description: 

• The Department is seeking a candidate with extensive industry experience in leading the analysis and design of civil structures. The successful candidate will also participate in academic administration, supervise undergraduate and postgraduate research, and develop a productive research program within their research group. As a senior staff member, he or she will also be expected to participate in the department's strategic planning and decision-making.

Responsibilities: 

• Teaching undergraduate and postgraduate modules in the areas of Structural Engineering.
• Conducting research in the areas of Structural and Materials Engineering.
• Supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate students.
• Source research fund for the research group in the department.
• Contributing to academic and departmental administration.

Minimum requirements

• A Doctorate (NQF 10) in a relevant Civil Engineering field for a Senior Lecturer level.
• A MEng/MSc/MPhil Engineering degree (NQF 9) for a Lecturer level, with at least five (5) years of experience in structural and materials engineering.
• Professional registration in the category of engineer or technologist with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA), or the candidate must be eligible for professional registration within one year.
• A strong and proven background in Structural Engineering, supported by extensive industry experience in the structural analysis and design of major structures.
• Evidence of research experience, demonstrated through scholarly publications and/or postgraduate supervision, would be advantageous.
• An excellent academic study record in Civil Engineering.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.

Recommendations:

• Previous tertiary teaching experience at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level would be advantageous.
• An extensive network of collaborators from industry.
• A high level of independence and self-motivation.
• The ability or experience to function in a multidisciplinary environment.

Competencies and Behavioural Attributes:

• The successful candidate must have good planning and organisational skills.
• Team player with good interpersonal skills, as well as the ability to collaborate with colleagues from within and outside UJ.
• He/she must have a distinguished record of research and scholarly achievements, together with an extensive network of collaborators from industry.
