    Senior New Business Development Manager

    Job Purpose:

    This role is responsible for leading, managing and implementing Oxfam South Africa’s Fundraising Strategy. The incumbent will work closely with the finance team to understand the funding gaps of the organization, the programmes team to identify funding opportunities for the different programmes, the Executive’s office to understand the overall vision of the organisation and the Communications team to develop communications tools geared for potential donors.

    The incumbent will also play a Coordination of relations with funding units of Oxfam affiliates and maintain up to date information on new donor opportunities and relevant calls for proposals that are relevant for South Africa. They will maintain relationships with funders and will advice theExecutive on opportunities of networking with different funders. 

    They will keep an accurate database of all potential donors for OZA and be responsible for proposal development and writing, which will include developing timelines to gather the relevant information for the different proposals.

    In seeking to diversify Oxfam’s funding pool, the incumbent will also set up Oxfam’s public giving (public fundraising) strategy and over see it. They will also explore opportunities with the private sector as per Oxfam’s partnership and fundraising charter.

    Key Performance Areas amongst others will include:

    Strategic leadership

    •  Provide strategic leadership in the implementation of OZA’s fundraising strategy
    •  Develop, manage and increase OZA’s institutional funding portfolio and income at the national and international levels in coordination with the programme staff and other Oxfam affiliate fundraising units.
    •  Research and compile information on internal and external financing sources at local, regional and international level.
    •  Lead and support frequent internal and external negotiations with institutional donors.
    •  Analyse information on the work, as well as the context in which the programmes are developed in order to maximize opportunities for financing the programmes.
    •  Maintain regular contact with internal players at various affiliate levels at the national, regional and global levels.
    •  Lead a public giving/fundraising process.
    •  Establish relationships with the private sector and explore funding opportunities for OZA.

    Institutional Fundraising

    •  Lead implementation of an innovative and institutional fundraising strategy with clearly articulated targets.
    •  In collaboration with the Executive team, identify funding gaps, set fundraising targets and set milestones and targets to meet them.
    •  Ensure OZA develops strong and dynamic relations with institutional donors.
    •  Develop and implement effective systems and processes for fundraising and donor relations management.

    Business Development

    •  Develop all funding proposals for OZA.
    •  Develop a pipeline for revenue generation offerings by OZA towards a self-sustaining affiliate.
    •  In collaboration with the finance unit, develop unit costs of OZA activities and budget for them appropriately. This includes organising pre-proposal strategy working with programmesion strategy and ensuring that budgets and narrative text are developed, reviewed and edited per donor requirements.
    •  With the support of the Public Fundraising specialist, design and explore social enterprise and public fundraising opportunities for OZA.
    •  Provide guidance and support to development of proactive concepts, converting ideas into sellable proposals and actively participate in identifying sources of support for such proposals.

    Donor relations and management

    •  Coordinate and manage donor relations.
    •  Ensure quality, consistency and continuity in OZA’s approach with donors.
    •  Coordinate with other units for effective implementation of donor commitments and timely reporting.

    Strengthen internal capacity.

    •  Strengthen the capacity of OZA teams, by expanding the capacity of team members to participate in new business development efforts.
    •  Support the OZA to develop fundraising strategies through training. People management and development
    •  Provide high quality leadership and support to the New Business Development Team to deliver on their mandate, ensure that the management of the team is in line with Oxfam SA’s, values, HR policies and procedures.
    •  Build a high-performance culture in the New Business Development team.

    Qualification and Experience

    •  An MBA or master’s in business science, Marketing or equivalent at NQF Level 7
    •  A post-graduate qualification in finance and new business development
    •  Minimum 10 years of experience in institutional fundraising experience (e.g. EU, multilateral agencies, Trusts, Foundations and in government).
    •  Demonstrable fundraising track record of over R5-million raised per annum.
    •  Knowledge and understanding of public fundraising.
    •  Experience in business development strategies and methodologies, preferably as they apply to the not-for-profit sector.
    •  Strong communications and networking skills
    •  Excellent proposal writing skills.
    •  Expertise in fundraising with a successful track record in securing significant funding from institutional donors.
    •  Strong expertise in business development including strategy and forging partnerships.
    •  Managing donor relations and negotiation skills
    •  Excellent time management and ability to work independently with little supervision.
    •  Knowledge of and skill in working with programs and financing contract management systems.
    •  Ms Office computer skills (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)
    •  Electronic database experience
    •  Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work in a high profile, fast-paced environment.
