Mission/ Core purpose of the Job
The Senior Specialist Legal Support is responsible to support the office of the Group Chief Legal Counsel and its initiatives within the MTN Group. The role will provide business management support to the Group Chief Legal Counsel and the Group Legal operations including in respect of business risk management, monitoring and reporting. The Senior specialist will also provide business management, stakeholder coordination and administrative support.

The urgency for change has become more heightened amidst increased competitive intensity across all markets in which MTN operates. The Group Legal function must therefore ensure the successful delivery in context of:

- The geographic complexity of MTN’s footprint across Africa and the Middle East.
- Management of executive and local shareholder expectations across all 22 OpCos.
- Achievement of top quartile operating efficiency and effectiveness through scale and common processes.

Key Deliverables
The Senior Specialist Legal Support will be accountable to achieve the following objectives:
- Provide administrative and coordination support and assistance with the operational, risk and business management of the Group Legal Function.
- Liaise with, collate and incorporate feedback from, various internal stakeholders and departments for purposes of transactions, initiatives and projects.
- Provide support, guidance and advice to MTN Operating Companies, where requested or required, regarding business management, risks and other matters.
- Provide business administration and management support for Group Legal and Group Chief Legal Counsel.
- Provide operational support to Group Legal in respect of various projects or initiatives.
- Provide support in respect of Group Legal policy compliance reporting and coordination across various operations, reporting on policy breaches, remediations, risk reporting etc.
- Prepares and drafts critical correspondence, presentations, reports and spreadsheets with attention to detail.
- Assist and support on a need basis in the provision of input and review materials, presentations and communications.
- Analyze, gather and summarize a variety of business and market information.
- Request information and actions on behalf of the Group Chief Legal Counsel and ensure that these requests are fulfilled efficiently and effectively.
- Support the Group Chief Legal Counsel in holding the team members accountable to timelines and commitments.
- Ensure the follow through and outcomes on agreed actions.
Role Dependencies
- Active support from the Group Legal management team and Senior Leadership.
- Deep understanding of the legal function operations.
- Timely decision making and reporting.
- Alignment of OpCo and Group strategy initiatives.
Job Requirements (Education, Experience and Competencies)
Education:
- Minimum 4 - Year Degree Business Management qualification
- Paralegal qualification advantageous.
- Fluent in English
Experience:
- Minimum 3 - 5 years of Legal experience at a reputable law firm or in-house legal function
- Business Management experience advantageous
- Paralegal experience advantageous
- Must have worked in a business administrative role or managerial role in a legal function
- Must have experience in legal risk management and reporting
- Stakeholder management and coordination
- Attention to detail and execution efficiency
- Legal function and supporting counsel experience
- Considerable exposure and participation in Negotiations and drafting of highly complex transactions documents (locally and internationally)
- Work across diverse cultures and geographies
- Must be able to work with all programs Microsoft excel, PPT, etc
- Computer Literacy and Presentations skills
