Senior Specialist, Spatial Information at Exxaro Resources

Job Advert Summary    
PURPOSE: •

• To provide expert knowledge and information to a range of customers that underpins strategic mineral resource estimation and planning.

MAJOR CHALLENGES:

• Provide geological information through various data manipulation/modelling techniques for accurate estimation, operational prediction and planning of short, medium and long objectives.
• Integrating different facets of modelling, sometimes products of divergent software packages, programs and versions, to ensure a seamless geological and subsequent mine planning process.
• Managing (without direct control) project delivery of seamless resource estimation solutions. Providing multi-disciplinary support to operational and project teams.

Minimum Requirements    
QUALIFICATIONS:

• BSc (Hons) Geology (Essential/Minimum)
• Management Development Programme (Recommended/Desirable)

EXPERIENCE: 

•  6-8 years Relevant Commodity geology (mining, exploration) experience. With experience in Geological data management, modelling, Geographic Information Systems and estimation  (Essential/Minimum)    

REQUIREMENTS: 

• Psychometric Assessment (Essential/Minimum) (To be conducted by Exxaro)
• Certificate of Fitness (Essential/Minimum) (To be conducted by Exxaro)
• SA Council for Natural Scientific Prof (Essential/Minimum or)
• Geological Society of SA (GSSA) (Essential/Minimum)

Duties & Responsibilities    
POSITION OUTPUTS:

The incumbent will inter alia be responsible for the following:
Business Performance and Operations  

• Take ownership of assigned geological information and prepare information for modelling and other sourced relevant operational data.
• Evaluate compositing and substitutes for use in modelling.
• Conduct quarterly/annual production analysis and evaluate short term reconciliation to validate previous model accuracy.
• Prepare geo plans/sections and support short, medium and long term systems/models (geology, structural, Rock Engineering) that will assist operational team in the management of the mineral resource.
• Compile accurate geo models for Life of Mine (LOM) (long term) planning support for projects and operations.
• Conduct mineral resource estimations, calculations, reporting.
• Compile, with the Competent Person (CP), polygons for classification.
• Conduct applicable stats/geo-stats to enhance analysis and class.
• Support the Mineral Resource estimation process to ensure accurate and complaint estimation towards a complaint Mineral Resource statement.
• Ensure complaint annual individual resource and reserve estimates and statement.
• Transfer knowledge and expertise to operational personnel as to improve the prediction of geological complexities.
• Develop/apply business solutions based on needs of Business Units (BU).
• Research and apply techno innovations.
• Liaise with Info management in managing spatial techniques in different mine sites.

Business Performance and Operations: Resource Maintenance and Evaluation  

• Work in project team so results delivered on time/budget to support mining operations in BU's and adopt high project management standards.
• Ensure geo modelling, rock engineering, hydro-geological, geophysical modelling, geo-statistics and database management in project.
• Ensure project management of geo-spatial projects.
• Ensure evaluation of conversion of geospatial data across multiple platforms.

Functional Excellence

• Standardise, enhance and align the resource estimation processes.
• Apply resource estimation best practices and promote sharing of best practices/knowledge between estimators and modellers.
• Drive towards functional excellence.
• Contribute to resource estimation functional/cross-functional alignment with other Geoscientific and Mineral Resources Management (MRM) disciplines.
• Contribute towards statutory and operational reporting excellence.
• Provide expert technical support/direction.
• Ensure awareness of technology advancements/innovations.
• Identify, report and manage critical resource estimation and geological spatial information risks through appropriate mitigation plans/actions within the Geosciences (Risk Registers) and RODA.
• Support CP in the estimation, classification and reporting of Mineral Resources.

Functional Management  

• Financial management: Support cost management and forecast
• Performance management: Contributes to the objectives, track implementation and ensure corrective measures to achieve goals. Maintain high performance standards. Track and drive targets/goals and hold team members/peers working towards estimation or modelling responsible for achieving timely results.
• Continuous improvement and functional change: Identify and advocate for spatial information teams towards improvement and change. Contribute towards a culture of continuous improvement and change agility in the spatial information community at large.
• Engagement/communication: Communicate and engage with data management and integration and other assigned spatial data project/systems.

Geoscientific Risk and Opportunity Management    

• Support geological information custodianship.
• Contribute towards knowledge sharing.
• Identify risks/opportunities and develop, implement and maintain associated systems (RODA).
• Geographic Information Systems (GIS) data collation and solutions and management for mineral tenure, geosciences, environmental, infrastructure, mining and surface spatial information management as assigned.
