    Snr Process Engineer x2 (106463)

    ABOUT THE ROLE / PURPOSE OF THE JOB

    • The position requires to work in teams to support the process engineering strategy with respect to meeting production targets. The incumbent will provide process engineering technical support and identify improvement opportunities at the Secunda Operations plants; as well as support environmental, compliance and sustainability (ECS) projects within the ECS structure of the relevant technical support team.
    • The incumbent will report directly to the  Lead Process Engineer. The position has no subordinates but be expected to play a technical lead and coaching role to other engineers. 

     Key Accountabilities:

    • Contribute value chain technical input into the daily assurance process.
    • Define value chain "Operate within agreed Parameters" (OWAP) and identify optimisation opportunities for the operating units of the value chain.
    • The incumbent should have an understanding of the value chains within the Synfuels operations.
    • Understand overall business drivers and generate improvement opportunities for Volume Protection Plan (VPP).
    • Define, defend and enhance complex / value chain problems and translate input into meaningful steps for the improvement plans.
    • Deliver technical track and process related inputs required on medium to large projects (tier 2-4) in accordance with sound established engineering principles and standards to satisfy business requirements.
    • The incumbent should also have a sound understanding of the process unit operations including the constraints and flexibilities through direct exposure to the unit and through the relationships with technical resources.
    • Responsible for environmental compliance and sustainability aspects for the relevant area. 

    Qualifications Required:

    •    University Bachelor's Degree (BEng/BSc Chemical)

     Experience:

    •   A minimum of 8 years relevant experience (must).

    Functional / Technical  

    • To understand and incorporate the value chain impact on the plant OWAP to assure: that the plant can safely produce at volume within agreed parameters plant reliability within agreed parameters that the plant is operated at optimal/lowest unit cost within agreed parameters.
    • Monitor and action corrective steps to ensure plants is operated within the OWAP and ensure reoccurrences are eliminated.
    • All OWAP's are defined to required standard, understand deviations and propose technical solutions (performance measured against MSR’s, Quality losses, efficiency losses, yield losses and development of appropriate mitigation measures).
    • Develop process related improvement plans/technical landscape.
    • Drive implementation of restoration and improvement opportunities (loss accounting).
    • Drive technical initiatives to maintain stability and improve safety of the Synfuels operating units.
    • Monitor and interpret performance on technical drivers, constraints and levers on value chain level.
    • Shutdown support with respect to process equipment integrity and ensure opportunity inclusion in improvement plans.
    • Process engineering input into operating manuals, including start-up and shutdown procedures as well as training manuals.
    • Understand overall business drivers and generate improvement opportunities for VPP (predictive input into the production planning and scheduling processes).
    • Contribute technical inputs into VPP and proactively identify risks and improvement opportunities for the VPP.
    • Identify process deviation, threats, risks and opportunities through monitoring of value chains ensure implementation of improvement plans.
    • Ensure process integrity of equipment is restored through inspections and opportunities identified is included in improvement plans.
    • Value chain heat maps and reporting on efficiencies, losses and integrity concerns.
    • Define, defend and enhance plant improvement initiatives through technical investigations via the asset management process (ISO 55000).
    • Proactive monitoring and risk identification for value chain operations.
    • Assess accuracy of yield predictions.
    • Reports to be issued as per requirements.
    • Ensure quality of technical proposals and ensure applicable technical governance has been applied through formal peer review process.
    • Plant reliability, volume and unit cost are quantified and improved.
    • Analyse deviations, understand cause of deviation and eliminate re-occurrence on unit operations and across the value chain.
    • Utilise plant basics (mass balances, energy balances, fingerprinting, MSR's, operating envelopes/philosophies, critical parameters and levers and predictive monitoring tools) to deliver on business unit improvement plans and technical landscape.
    • Monitoring of energy usage and optimisation ensuring energy improvement plans are in place.
    • Energy management across the value chain.
    • Compliance to Energy, environmental and intensity future roadmaps.

    Effective stakeholder engagement by taking the lead in discussions with internal and external stakeholders, to ensure necessary level of technical support is provided to ensure effective resolution of problems.

    • Actively participate in peer reviews by peer reviewing the work of other engineers.
    • Guidance of Engineers and Junior Engineers (Act as mentor).
    • Project execution performance
    • Provide process engineering support and input in medium to large projects (tier 2-4), such as:
    • Ensure all future projects meet relevant energy, environmental and intensity guidelines.
    • Ensure compliance to internal/legal requirements during project execution and modifications to plant operation.
    • Process design and peer reviews (conceptual, basic engineering as well as detail).
    • Participation in design and safety reviews.
    • Ensure appropriate governance is applied with regard to the process scope (conformance to standards and specifications).
    • Lead engineer support during start-up and commissioning activities.
    • Supply techno-economical input into business unit business cases.
    • Compliance with project milestones and metrics.
    • Conceptual design of potential plant improvement initiatives.
    • Optimum solution achieved for opportunities identified.

    Environmental compliance and sustainability (ECS)

    • Ensure the environmental compliance and sustainability landscape for the specific area is well defined with roadmaps to ensure compliance within the required timeline.
    • Demonstrate minimum technical and cost solution of roadmaps.
    • Define the baseline and problem definition for environmental aspects.
    • Build networks with SO SHE and other supporting functions (R&T, PEI&T etc) to support delivery.
    • TS representative on projects and support with technical inputs, design and safety reviews, punching, commissioning and performance evaluation.
    • Develop conceptual design of improvement initiatives depending on execution model.
    • Driver of initiatives until handover to PEI&T or project manager.
    • Inputs into SO sustainability team to ensure the area aspects are accurate and updated.
    • Update SUPM information for relevant area.
    • Update relevant reports with regards to ECS status.
    • Develop dashboards for the area to reflect status of the ECS aspects.
    • Interface management of key stakeholders to ensure compliance commitments are met in time.

     SHE performance

    • Identification, quantification and take the lead in mitigation of process risks and ensure inclusion in process plans
    • Adherence to SHE strategy to achieve zero harm.
    • Continuous improvement of key process metrics to maintain license to operate.
    • Zero process safety incidents
    • Delivery on Process safety management elements
    • Well documented Root Cause analyses for all significant loss incidents and major equipment failures.
    • Actively identify process safety threats and deliver on mitigation plans.
    • Technical input into Hazops, PFD and MFD reviews (Fulfil role of technical representative).
    • Demonstrate fundamental documentation and tools are in place and still relevant.
    • Compliance with internal guidelines & policies e.g. MOC process followed.
