    Specialist - Community Liaison

    Job Description:

    As our Specialist Community Liaison your responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

    Safety, Health, and Environment

    • Consistently apply Safety & Health principles in all team interactions and take personal responsibility for the safety of self and others to ensure zero harm and elimination of fatalities.
    • Act as a role model and reinforce a workplace culture where safety and health for the site is paramount.
    • Provide an environment for on-site teams to challenge and act on unsafe behaviours without repercussions.
    • Identify PUEs and monitor critical control performance within teams.
    • Embed critical controls into the daily work practices of teams.
    • Engage in physical safety checks, interventions and coaching.
    • Create safety reports and manage analysis of KPIs based on available data.
    • Report deficiencies and implement plans to address shortcomings.
    • Facilitate continual safety audits to check that all safety requirements are being met.
    • Support site visits by internal and external visitors to ensure adherence to site safety systems (including induction).

    Performance and Delivery

    Community Engagement & Planning:

    • Implement integrated community engagement strategies aligned with the mine’s Social and Labour Plan (SLP), Mining Charter, and ESG commitments.
    • Conduct community needs assessments and socio-economic baselines to inform project planning and stakeholder engagement.
    • Design and manage stakeholder engagement frameworks that ensure inclusive participation and long-term relationship building.
    • Align community engagement initiatives with the mine’s sustainability and transformation objectives.

    Stakeholder Relationship Management:

    • Build and maintain trust-based relationships with traditional leaders, community forums, NGOs, local government, and other key stakeholders.
    • Serve as the primary liaison between the mine and host communities, ensuring two-way communication and transparency.
    • Facilitate regular community meetings, feedback sessions, and grievance resolution forums.
    • Represent the company in multi-stakeholder platforms and public forums.

    Social Performance & Compliance

    • Monitor and report on the implementation of SLP, LED, and CSI projects in line with DMRE and company requirements.
    • Ensure compliance with the MPRDA, BBBEE Act, and other relevant legislation.
    • Coordinate Social Impact Assessments (SIAs) and contribute to Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) from a community perspective.
    • Track and report on social risks, community grievances, and mitigation measures.

    Project Management & Delivery:

    • Lead the planning, execution, and monitoring of community development and infrastructure projects.
    • Manage budgets, timelines, and stakeholder expectations for community-related initiatives.
    • Collaborate with procurement to ensure local supplier development and community participation in economic opportunities.
    • Support enterprise and skills development initiatives that promote local employment and entrepreneurship.

    Conflict Resolution & Risk Mitigation:

    • Identify and address potential sources of conflict between the mine and communities.
    • Mediate disputes and facilitate dialogue to maintain social cohesion and operational continuity.
    • Develop early warning systems and community risk registers to manage tensions proactively.

    Capacity Building & Empowerment:

    • Facilitate training and awareness programmes for both internal teams and community stakeholders on engagement protocols, rights, and responsibilities.
    • Support the formation and strengthening of community structures (e.g., project steering committees, youth forums).
    • Promote participatory development approaches that empower communities to co-design and coimplement projects.

    Monitoring, Evaluation & Reporting:

    • Develop KPIs and impact indicators for community engagement and development programmes.
    • Prepare detailed reports for internal and external stakeholders, including DMRE, local municipalities, and community forums.
    • Use data and feedback to improve engagement strategies and project outcomes continuously.

    Internal Collaboration & Advisory:

    • Advise senior leadership on community dynamics, risks, and opportunities.
    • Collaborate with departments such as Corporate Affairs, Sustainability, HR, and Legal to ensure integrated community strategies.
    • Contribute to internal policy development and strategic planning processes.

    People & Teams:

    • Foster an inclusive, high-performance culture.
    • Set clear expectations and encourage continuous improvement.
    • Align team behaviours with Anglo American values.
    • Support team development through coaching and recognition.

    Compliance:

    • Investigate non-compliance issues and resolve incidents.
    • Share insights to prevent recurrence and improve systems.

    This role is in the Corporate Affairs (CA) department on a band 6.12 level reporting to the Manager Corporate Affairs.

    Qualifications:

    • Relevant Bachelor’s Degree in Social Science, or Development Studies, Public Administration or Social Impact Management on NQF7
    • SA Drivers Licence

    Technical Knowledge

    • 6-8 years of community engagement experience in a corporate setting, with a solid understanding of participatory development, social mobilisation, stakeholder mapping, and engagement frameworks.
    • Skilled in applying Social and Environmental Impact Assessments (SIA and EIA) within community contexts.
    • Familiar with relevant legislative frameworks, including the Mining Charter, MPRDA, BBBEE Act, and SLP requirements.
    • Knowledgeable about local government structures, IDPs, CSR strategies, ESG standards, and measuring social impact and ROI.
    • Understand socio-economic dynamics, cultural norms, traditional leadership, conflict drivers, and community risks.
    • Knowledge of integrating community engagement with business strategy, change management, organisational behaviour, and cross-functional collaboration.
