    Specialist Investigator

    Job Summary

    • As the threats and risks of Financial Crime increase in scale and complexity, Absa Group Financial Crime is responsible for ensuring that the Bank manages the risks of money laundering, terrorist financing, sanctions and bribery and corruption and, in so doing, protects the Bank, its customers and its employees, as well as society at large, from the negative effects of financial crime. The Financial Crime function implements a Financial Crime Risk framework to meet the requirements of anti-money laundering, anti-terrorism, anti-bribery & corruption and economic sanctions laws and regulations. 
    • Located within the Intelligence and Surveillance team (I&S), a sub-division of the FinCrime Compliance team, the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) carries out, on behalf the bank, sensitive and complex investigations related to the fight against Financial Crime. The Specialist Investigator is responsible for conducting and/or assisting with comprehensive detailed, intelligence and data-driven investigations on our clients in South Africa and across ARO.

    Job Description

    Investigations

    • Conduct and/or assist with complex forensic data and intelligence-driven investigations both in SA and across ARO.
    • This will include gathering of data and any other qualitative data related to the client(s) in question.
    • Such investigations may be pro-actively generated or re-actively initiated on the back of subpoenas, court orders, etc.
    • The investigations must be carried out to the highest standards and findings must withstand interrogation and scrutiny from the relevant stakeholders.
    • The Specialist Investigator must be able to compile detailed and comprehensive investigation reports, most of which are submitted to the SIU’s stakeholders (RBB and CIB units), once reviewed.
    • The successful candidate must be flexible in his/her approach, as changes and unfolding events demand.

    Intelligence gathering

    • Mine and manage internal intelligence in relation to our clients, drawing on past investigations, STRs, SARs, etc.

    Regulatory and global trends and threats

    • Keep abreast of changing regulatory trends and crime threats regionally and globally.
    • Monitor and analyze local, regional and international financial crime threats to understand and map AGL’s risk

    Stakeholder management 

    • Support the SIU team in the management of stakeholder relations (CIB, RBB, ARO) in such a manner that business regards the SIU as a professional investigative team that efficiently manages their risk and protects the bank.

    Liaison across the Financial Crime Compliance unit

    • Maintain strong working relationships with colleagues across I&S and the broader FinCrime Team to ensure greater efficiencies in the way we work and in so doing, minimize duplication of efforts/work

    Education  and Experience Required

    • 2-5 years experience in the field of forensic/corporate investigations either within a bank, consultancy or law firm.
    • Experience in Financial Crime Compliance.
    • Experience in complex forensic investigations
    • Relevant B-degree in Law, Accounting, Risk Management, Forensic Investigations, or related field.
    • Experience in data analysis and/or data analytics an advantage.
    • Strong written communication and report writing skills
    • Strong inter-personal skills

    Preferred

    • Certificate in Money Laundering Control, ACAMS Certificate or Certified Fraud Examiner (ACFE), or equivalent.
    • Experience in Financial Crime Compliance

    Education

    • Bachelor`s Degrees and Advanced Diplomas: Business, Commerce and Management Studies (Required)
