    Sustainability Manager

     To ensure a Safe, Healthy and Environmentally compliant work environment and systems certification in accordance with the Company and legal requirements, including all Business Unit sites and areas, as well as logistics (rail and road).


    MAJOR CHALLENGES:

    •  Cost control in terms of allocation of costs due to corporate initiatives 
    •  Alignment and synergy between Business Units

    •  MHS Act Section 72 (Essential/Minimum)Duties & ResponsibilitiesThe incumbent will inter alia be responsible for the following:

    Business Performance and Operations

    •  Identify, prioritise and manage Safety Health and Environmental (SHE) risks for the Business Unit (BU) including owned or leased rail and road operations.
    •  Manage implementation of SHE Management System and ensure corrective actions are implemented for all incidents.
    •  Ensure development, implementation and monitoring of SHE Programs.
    •  Advise BU Managers during planning, implementation and operation of SHE management systems.
    •  Health, Safety, Hygiene and Medical exposure management.
    •  Manage medical surveillance, implement Occupational Health (OH) Programme and manage occupational health facility/clinic.


    Compliance, Governance and Assurance

    •  Ensure all BU operations (including logistics operations) are carried out in compliance with SHE legal requirements, conform to policies, systems and procedures.
    •  Oversee implementation of processes to support BU needs in developing/submitting legal documents to relevant stakeholders as required for technical standards and audits.
    •  Comply with statutory and non-statutory requirements.
    •  Coordinate SHE compliance audits.
    •  Coordinate the cross-functional Social and Labour Plan (SLP), Mining Charter and Broad Based Black Economic Empowerment (BBBEE) reporting according to the standards, guidelines and processes defined by Corporate Sustainability Manager.
    •  Coordinate and report and quality assure SHE in line with the Mining Charter requirements.
    •  Manage SHE risk reporting and monitoring.


    Functional Excellence

    •  Develop and maintain functional policies, standards, guidelines, procedures, end-to-end processes, tools, templates etc. and enforce group-wide adherence to these.
    •  Standardise, simplify and speed-up functional processes, eliminate duplication/bureaucracy.
    •  Develop and apply functional best practices, promote sharing of best practices/knowledge.
    •  Drive and execute functional excellence initiatives.
    •  Oversee and monitor functional activities at operations.
    •  Establish functional/cross-functional forums, Communities of Practice (COP’s) etc. to ensure functional alignment.
    •  Effectively manage matrix reporting.
    •  Identify and manage critical functional risks through appropriate mitigation plans/actions.

    • Functional Management
    •  Financial management: Prepare/manage function’s budget (BUs). Forecast/recover costs. Manage and ensure compilation, implementation and monitoring of SHE value add to ensure funds are optimally utilised and service delivery within budget. Ensure SHE capability targets are achieved. Facilitate closure cost assessments and provision of guarantees for environmental trust fund.
    •  Strategic alignment/planning: Communicate Group strategy to function. Set functional direction, develop functional strategic plan aligned to, and driving, the Group’s vision/purpose, strategy, goals, priorities, including aligning functional work/resources. Establish measurable functional targets from the Group targets. Define and reinforce the link between the Group, functional, operational goals and individual outputs, measures, rewards.
    •  Performance management:
    • Ensure functional strategic plan implemented through disciplined execution processes, track implementation, provide feedback to executive. Coordinate functional/cross-functional activities to ensure strategic alignment. Set and maintain high performance standards. Track and drive functional targets/goals, hold staff responsible for achieving results. Remove obstacles that interfere with performance, handle performance problems.
    •  Continuous improvement and functional change: Identify, advocate for and lead functional improvement and change. Create culture of continuous improvement and change agility in function.
    •  Engagement/communication: Communicate and engage functional employees, including virtuals. Engage with executives, operations and cross-functionally with peers. Represent the function/the Company externally, as required.
    •  Governance: Ensure function adheres to Group governance, policies, standards, statutory and legal compliance. Entrench a culture of discipline.

    • People Management
    •  Staffing: Select, appoint and on-board staff.
    •  Performance management: Clarify roles/responsibilities and expectations. Define individual performance standards, monitor and measure performance, reward and recognise high performance. Apply consistent performance and consequence management, take prompt action against non-performance.
    •  Talent development: Actively manage talent through regular assessment of employees’ strengths, development needs and development progress. Provide ongoing mentoring, coaching and development feedback to employees. Manage functional talent pipeline and succession planning process. Promote culture of continuous learning. Encourage and empower team to make decisions.
    •  Culture/functional climate: Embody, translate and entrench the culture and values in function, address behaviours that undermine values. Foster effective teamwork and unity. Manage functional climate in which diversity is appreciated, high performance thrives, people are involved, energised, committed, motivated and recognised. Demonstrate and encourage collaboration including cross-functionally and create culture of collaboration. Create an environment in which people are inspired to perform and a high-performance culture.
    •  Change leadership: Provide direction, guidance and support to people having to adapt to change, keep them committed throughout. Actively support, advocate for and embrace functional/organisational change and reinforce/role model the change. Address resistance, beliefs, mind-sets, behaviours and emotions to help people adapt to change.
    •  Communication/engagement: Encourage open expression of ideas/opinions and foster dialogue. Seek out different opinions. Inform people of decisions, changes and other relevant information. Proactively address conflicts and initiate difficult conversations.
    •  Team development: Develop effective and high performing team including shared team purpose, principles, goals, accountability and effective team player capabilities. Create an environment of accountability and trust.
    • Process Support
    •  Develop a Sustainability Strategy for BU from the functional strategy and compile a Business Plan in accordance therewith. Ensure implementation of the strategy in the BU.
    •  Ensure Best Practices are identified, defined and aligned across the BU and the Company at large.
    • SHE Operations
    •  Provide guidance and direction for planning, implementation and operation of SHE management system.
    •  Identify opportunities for SHE performance improvement and implement programmes.
    •  Ensure SHE standardisation across BU's.
    •  Formulate objectives in terms of International Organisation Standards (ISO)/Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) and ensure plans are in place.
    •  Develop, implement and maintain SHE systems in accordance to BU certification and governance requirements.
    •  Manage SHE projects.
    •  Emergency preparedness management.
    •  Coordinate and monitor ongoing mine rehabilitation.
    • Safe and Healthy Work Environment
    •  Maintain and ensure a healthy environment, safe operations practices, ensuring compliance with all applicable SHE policies procedures in line with set standards.
    •  Encourage a culture that focuses on safety in all operations.
