Systems Engineer ICT Services and Operations at Nelson Mandela University

CORE PURPOSE OF JOB

• Responsible for the administration of university core database and application systems, including the optimal performance, integrity, and security of these systems. Drives the adoption of cloud technologies within the Operations section to leverage its benefits for these systems.

KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS

• Management and administration of all databases, including the ITS ERP and SQL services
• Management and administration of database dependant application servers
• Design and manage the implementation of on-premise, cloud and/or 3rd party hosted applications and systems
• Provide technical support for the maintenance of on-premise, cloud and/or 3rd party applications and systems
• Tasks and projects as assigned by ICT Management

CORE COMPETENCIES

• Experience with Oracle WebLogic and AdaptIT Integrator ERP platform (version 4 or higher) would be advantageous
• Experience with working in both Windows and Linux server environments
• Plan and maintain system backup and disaster recovery strategies
• Manage and administrate enterprise database and reporting services including Oracle, PostgreSQL, MySQL and MSSQL
• Proven ability to integrate storage systems with application and DB services
• Proven ability to administer applications, e.g. to identify runaway processes/jobs and to deal with associated problems
• Proven understanding of ICT security concepts and the ability to identify any weaknesses and implement the appropriate controls
• Experience administering Apache web services including Tomcat and Java services
• Ability to design and administer reporting systems, including SSRS, PowerBI and Jasper
• Experience in proposing, provisioning, and maintaining highly available, stable and recoverable on-prem and cloud systems.
• Experience in using cloud native database platforms
• Experience developing automation tools or scripts.

REQUIREMENTS

• M + 3 Degree or Diploma in Information Technology or Computer Science
• Minimum of 4 years’ experience where relevant competency has been gained
• Database and Cloud certifications would be advantageous
