Underwriting Clerk: Marine at Santam Insurance

What will you do?

• A position has become available within Santam Marine for an Underwriting Clerk and will be based in Cape Town.

What will make you successful in this role?

Underwriting:

• Underwrite and manage a portfolio of existing and new business, which may be complex in nature, including all tasks associated therewith but not limited Underwriting Governance which includes detailed risk evaluation and assessment, coverage and exposure analysis, detailed claims analysis and wording review & negotiations within underwriting authority.
• Refer and acquire sign-off relating to matters falling outside of own authority, in accordance with authority matrix.
• Adherence at all times to the authority matrix, departmental protocols and procedures, including Underwriting Governance provisions.
• Detailed explanations regarding changes with respect to terms/ underwriting stance.

Client Liaison (Internal and External)

• Respond to queries and resolve to the satisfaction of the affected parties within the scope of authority and / or responsibility.
• Continuously monitor quality and accuracy of the documents and KIT/M-file records produced by the system
• Get involved in ongoing system testing

Reinsurance gap exposure management 

• Follow up on quotations and renewals.
• Sign and check policy documentation.
• Attend to daily administrative tasks in accordance with organisational standards, processes and procedures.
• Adhere to organisation’s standards, processes and processes as it relates to underwriting governance. 

Reporting:

• Feedback on findings and priority remedial actions required
• Assistance with risk and compliance reporting and submissions 

Stakeholder Management:

• Maintain and develop effective relationships with key internal stakeholders

Qualification and Experience

• Matric
• A tertiary qualification in Insurance and Risk management is preferred
• 3-5 years marine underwriting experience

• Core technical skills in the areas of underwriting, reinsurance, and risk management
• Strong interpersonal, facilitation and verbal and written communication skills
• Ability to self-manage while managing assigned teams and projects.
• Ability to work appropriately with sensitive and confidential information
