    Veterinarian

    Job Description

    • A leading poultry and food manufacturing company is looking for an experienced Veterinarian with strong experience in commercial poultry production, flock health management, disease surveillance, animal welfare, and veterinary diagnostics to join their team in Hammarsdale. The successful candidate will be responsible for leading regional veterinary operations, ensuring compliance with animal health legislation, implementing disease prevention strategies, driving animal welfare initiatives, and supporting the production of healthy breeder flocks, chicks, and broilers while maintaining the highest food safety and biosecurity standards.

    Responsibilities:

    • Develop and implement regional flock health, vaccination, medication, and disease control strategies.
    • Oversee veterinary diagnostic programmes and laboratory operations.
    • Ensure compliance with notifiable and zoonotic disease legislation and reporting requirements.
    • Act as the primary veterinary liaison with provincial veterinary authorities.
    • Lead and maintain regional animal welfare programmes and standards.
    • Develop and implement pest control and biosecurity programmes.
    • Provide veterinary expertise and technical guidance to agriculture, laboratory, nutrition, and processing teams.
    • Monitor and improve flock health KPIs and operational performance.
    • Manage and develop the regional veterinary team through leadership, coaching, and performance management.
    • Ensure laboratory compliance with SANAS and relevant regulatory standards.
    • Oversee veterinary budgets, diagnostic costs, vaccine expenditure, and financial performance.
    • Support export certification processes and veterinary statutory responsibilities.
    • Drive continuous improvement initiatives across veterinary and laboratory operations.
    • Manage supplier relationships and veterinary service contracts.

    Requirements:

    • Veterinary Degree.
    • Postgraduate qualification in Poultry Diseases and Production.
    • 3–5 years' experience in commercial poultry production.
    • Registration with the South African Veterinary Council (SAVC).
    • Ongoing CPD accreditation to maintain SAVC registration.
    • Strong knowledge of poultry diseases, animal welfare, biosecurity, and disease surveillance.
    • Experience managing multidisciplinary technical teams.
    • Strong leadership, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
    • Financial and budget management experience.
    • Knowledge of applicable veterinary legislation and food safety standards.
