    Senior Lecturer in Community Engagement

    For this role, the incumbent is expected to provide academic leadership to Academics in the teaching-research-community engagement nexus.

    There are three main objectives listed below.

    The first is to work with Academics and Academic Departments to:

    • Enhance the quality of institutional external engagement with communities and university partners through Community-Based Participatory Research.
    • Accelerate the impact and quality of Engaged Research (ER) initiatives and projects run by academics and departments at Rhodes University.
    • Build meaningful relationships with community partner organisations in Makhanda, assisting in brokering strategic partnerships between the community and the university
    • Develop and establish an Engaged Research course for students, staff at Rhodes University and local community partner organisations.
    • Support researchers and lecturers in developing innovative engagement
    • Implement mechanisms to capture evidence of initiatives, impact, and quality of engaged research
    • Establish monitoring and evaluation (M&E) support strategies for ER and reporting on ER at RU.
    • The second main objective is to make critical and original contributions to CE scholarship at local, national and international levels by generating community engagement knowledge by publishing articles for newspapers and pamphlets, writing scholarly papers for accredited/peer-reviewed academic journals, and presenting research at conferences.
    • The third main objective is to coordinate an engaged volunteer programme, theorising and promoting a scholarly, asset-based approach to community engagement at Rhodes University. Participate in the strategic management and oversight of the program's development, implementation, and M&E systems.

    The Requirements

    Senior Lecturer

    • At least a PhD in a relevant discipline, preferably Humanities or Social Science.
    • Experience in Community Development
    • Experience in Community Engagement
    • Teaching experience at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels is required.
    • Experience in conducting Community-Based Participatory Research.
    • Research supervision of at least a Masters degree is required.
    • Emerging national profile in the discipline.
    • Track record of administration, management and/or leadership roles (leadership roles may be informal).

    Principal Technical Officer - Makhanda

    Main Objectives

    • The purpose of this position is for the incumbent to be responsible for all the technical aspects of the Dept of Environmental Science, especially arrangements and support for undergraduate teaching practicals and post- graduate and staff field trips; participation in and logistical support during such practicals and trips; maintenance and control of all equipment and assets; basic repairs and maintenance around the dept; setting up and maintaining relevant databases; the departmental newsletter and Departmental Website; assisting in marking of undergraduate practical assessments such as reports and verbal presentations; maintenance of records as required and direct supervision of the new technical officer.

    The Requirements

    A three year Technical diploma/degree in natural, agricultural or social sciences PLUS 4 years relevant experience Relevant experience includes: -

    • Previous experience in a similar environment where setting up practical’s and organising field trips were key responsibilities.
    • Previous experience in Health and Safety or be in possession of a Health and Safety Certificate. Must be able to demonstrate a working knowledge of OHSA.
    • Previous experience in working in an computerised administrative environment. Must be computer literate and able to work word processing and spreadsheet packages. The ability to operate email and the internet is also necessary.
    • Experience in GIS and other statistical packages will be an advantage.
    • Must be in possession of a valid unendorsed driver’s licence and be prepared to obtain a PDP licence – the Institution will cover the cost of obtaining the PDP licence. The obtaining of a PDP licence is a job requirement and as such will form part of the probation period. Failure to obtain a PDP licence during the probation period could result in the termination of employment.
    • At least one years staff supervision experience.
    • A postgraduate qualification will be an added advantage.

    Readvertising: Psychologist II

    Main Objectives

    • The main objective of this post is to provide comprehensive career counselling services to students and prospective students. 
    • In addition, the incumbent is responsible for the running of the Career Centre as well as assisting with the supervision and training of intern psychologists at the Counselling Centre as delegated by the Head of the Counselling Centre. 

    The Requirements

    • Qualified and registered counselling psychologist (Masters’ degree) with at least 3 year’s relevant work experience over and above their internship.
    • Active registration with HPCSA.
    • Individuals who have supervised interns will be at an advantage.
    • Relevant experience includes: -
    • Any work with adolescents or individuals with respect to Career Guidance. The greater the diversity of this experience the better for example, experience in one-on-one counselling, group counselling, educational work and Psychometric Services
    • Experience in dealing with Secondary School Learners will be an advantage as well as any experience with students at a Tertiary level

    Lecturer/Senior Lecturer

    Main Objectives

    • All academics are responsible for the dissemination of knowledge (teaching and learning), creation of knowledge (research) and community engagement, recognising that there are differences in the execution of these responsibilities within the various departments and faculties.
    • Academics are also expected to assume some administrative, management and/or leadership duties at the departmental, faculty and/or University level. 

    The Requirements

    Lecturer

    • A Masters degree in Afrikaans or Afrikaans en Nederlands is required. Candidates who provide evidence of their PhD thesis being under examination will be given preference.
    • Some teaching and tutoring experience at the undergraduate and Honours level is required.
    • Some teaching and tutoring experience in Afrikaans or Afrikaans and Dutch literature is required.
    • Experience in teaching or tutoring Afrikaans and/or Dutch language would be advantageous.
    • Research supervision experience would be an advantage.
    • Some evidence and experience in conducting research.
    • Some evidence of administration, management and/or leadership roles (leadership roles may be informal) is preferred.

    Senior Lecturer

    • A PhD in Afrikaans or Afrikaans en Nederlands is required.
    • Considerable teaching experience at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels is required.
    • Teaching experience in Afrikaans or Afrikaans and Dutch literature is required. Experience in teaching Afrikaans and/or Dutch language would be advantageous.
    • Research supervision experience to completion at least at Masters degree level is required.
    • Emerging national profile in the discipline and a credible record of accredited, peer-reviewed publications.
    • Track record of administration, management and/or leadership roles (leadership roles may be informal)
