    Plant Improvement (Hluhluwe)

    Description

    • Initiate/manage research on plant production and maintenance of seed propagation systems for tropical and subtropical fruit trees.
    • Ensure optimal application, utilisation and maintenance of farm facilities, apparatus and equipment.
    • Ensure that cyclic farm practices are timeous and correctly executed to ensure optimal success of research projects.
    • Manage farm and research staff.
    • Write publications/present research outcomes of relevance to subtropical fruit growers, industries and the scientific community.
    • Provide leadership and mentoring to research technicians, assistants and students.
    • Liaise with growers, industry technical officers and national and provincial government.

    Requirements

    • PhD in Plant Production/Agricultural Management.
    • Relevant experience of 3 years in a scientific research environment working on plant production.
    • Experience in farm management will be an added advantage.
    • In depth knowledge of Plant Production/Agricultural Management of tropical and subtropical crops. Practical experience in farm management will be an added advantage.
    • Proven record of at least 3 scientific publications and presentations at scientific conferences and symposia.
    • Registration with a scientific and professional body will be an added advantage.
    • Proven history of collaboration at national level.
    • Proven history of mentoring and supervising/co-supervising researchers and students.
    • Proven history of strategic and operational planning skills and expertise.
    • Proficiency in MS office suite.
    • Code EB driver’s license.

    Researcher: Biotechnology (Nelspruit)

    Description

    • Initiate/manage research on molecular markers in tropical and subtropical fruit trees.
    • Write publications/present research outcomes of relevance to subtropical fruit growers, industries and the scientific community.
    • Provide leadership and mentoring to research technicians, assistants and students.
    • Develop tools for molecular breeding and marker assisted selection in fruit trees.
    • Liaise with growers, industry technical officers and national and provincial government.

    Requirements

    • PhD in Plant Biotechnology/Molecular Biology.
    • Relevant experience of 3 years in a scientific research environment studying molecular markers in plants.
    • In depth knowledge of Plant Biotechnology/Plant Molecular Biology with a particular emphasis on molecular marker technologies.
    • Proven record of at least 3 scientific publications and presentations at scientific conferences and symposia.
    • Registration with a scientific and professional body will be an added advantage.
    • Proven history of collaboration at national level.
    • Proven history of mentoring and supervising/co-supervising researchers and students.
    • Proven history of strategic and operational planning skills and expertise.

    Research Team Manager: Meat Science and Technology, Irene (Irene (Ap))

    Description

    • Provides scientific leadership in meat science and technology research and development.
    • Manages the quality of science of the research programme including maintaining the quality of accepted scientific standards of excellence.
    • Plans and coordinates specialised research within a single or multi-disciplinary team.
    • Publishes peer-reviewed and semi-scientific articles.
    • Renders specialised analytical and scientific services.
    • Markets the research programme through the establishment of appropriate national and international networks and partnerships.
    • Builds and maintains relationships with national and international stakeholders and strategic partners to secure research funding.
    • Manages development of capacity and appropriate succession plan for the research team.
    • Identifies the resource requirements (e.g. equipment and material) for projects and manages them accordingly.

    Requirements

    • PhD. Meat Science and Technology or related field.
    • At least 5-8 years post PhD experience in meat science and related discipline.
    • Minimum of 20 scientific publications,
    • Proven track record of generating external income.
    • Proven track record of building national and international partnerships and networks.
    • Proven track record of strategic and operational planning skills and expertise.
    • NRF rating of at least C1 will be an added advantage.
    • Registration with a scientific and professional body will be an added advantage.
    • Computer literacy and proficiency in MS Office Suite.
    • A valid South African Code B (08) drivers’ licence.

    Research Technician: Veterinary X4 ( 2 Years Fixed-Term Contract) (Onderstepoort)

    Description

    • To render a quality proficiency test scheme (PTS) and Interlaboratory Comparison (ILC) service by
    • performing general virological, bacteriological, serological, and molecular test on veterinary samples in accordance with the requirements of ISO/IEC 17025.
    • Receiving samples, registering them, and taking them to the laboratories.
    • Testing the samples using methods such as Enzyme linked immunosorbent Assay (ELISA); Haemagglutination Inhibition (HI), Microscopic slide Agglutination (MAT); Compliment Fixation Test (CFT), Milk Ring Test (MRT); Rose Bengal Test (RBT), Agar Gel Immuno- Diffusion (AGID), Virus and bacterial Isolation and culture, Virus Neutralisation Test (VNT) etc.
    • Aliquoting, freeze drying and storing samples, and data capture.
    • Assisting in all quality assurance (QA) in the laboratories.
    • Providing diagnostic support by giving project inputs regarding technical details and carrying out assigned technical tasks.

    Requirements

    • National Diploma or B-Tech in Veterinary Technology.
    • Professional membership: SAVC registration is compulsory.
    • Knowledge of veterinary viral pathogens and diseases.
    • Good interpersonal skills.
    • A license will be an added advantage.
