    Manager: Just Energy Transition and Energy Finance

    • You will be expected to support your line Managing Director in the process of sales, onboarding clients and then project management and delivery. As a senior member of the team you will be expected to undertake some business development work on your own initiative, drawing on your own existing networks and develop such networks over time.
    • The pay package for this role will be appropriate to attract someone with the background and experience outlined below. This will include base pay, benefits and bonus schemes.

    Essential requirements are (do not apply if you do not meet these requirements as your application will not be considered):

    • Over seven years of work experience, latterly with some responsibilities relating to Just Energy Transition or climate-related policy and financing areas. Most likely for a bank, consulting company, think tank, business association, corporate, national government department, central bank or similar.
    • A wide understanding of the policy, technical and political issues around Just Energy Transition, and our clients (banks, corporates, philanthropies, government, financial markets and investors), and stakeholders (onshore and offshore government role players, the PCC, philanthropies, social partners) though you do not necessarily need to be a subject matter expert in every area individually.
    • Strong project management skills
    • A masters degree or higher in an appropriate discipline which might include economics, social sciences, engineering or similar that had a strong quantitative component
    • Excellent writing ability with a style suited to our client base, with past evidence of reports, essays or articles
    • Excellent proficiency in Excel
    • Excellent public presentation and debating skills
    • A deep understanding of the current Just Energy Transition issues, especially as they related to the political economy in South Africa
    • A deep interest in the wider policy, political, social and developmental environment in South Africa and the role of finance
    • A strong interest in regional and global issues around the Just Energy Transition including the geopolitics of JET

    Internship Programme

    Internships:

    We look to place interns in the following positions, either either a three-month or six-month contract. These internships are for recent graduates who are taking their first steps in their career. A modest monthly stipend is paid. In your application please indicate when you are available.

    • Financial markets & economics, working on macroeconomic analysis, equities analysis, fixed income analysis. The intern will assist with financial markets research using software like Stata and Excel and accessing financial databases like Iress, Bloomberg and Infront, while gaining experience in working on client reports and understanding key institutions in the South African financial markets. Such applicants would be recent graduates in economics, statistics or finance.
    • Financial journalism, working on producing content and interviewing subjects. Intellidex produces several publications based on its research usually in partnership with major media titles. Such applicants would be recent graduates with degrees in journalism and media studies, or a finance-related degree.
    • Social science, working on survey research and data analysis connected to market research projects. Intellidex undertakes a wide range of market research usually connected to financial services. We provide exposure to several key areas of the financial services industry and hands on experience in gathering data and survey input. Applicants would be recent graduates with degrees in sociology, politics, psychology, marketing, economics or similar subjects that require advanced primary research skills.

    Equity Research Internship Programme

    • This paid internship will be for 6 months at our Sandton offices. The candidate would join a team that studies South Africa’s equity markets broadly, and some markets in other countries. In particular, the candidate will assist the team with the final process of the publication of Intellidex’s equity and ETF research reports. The equity research reports will be on a broad range of JSE companies with an emphasis on small- and mid-cap sectors, as well as Intellidex’s coverage of local and international ETFs.
    • This position will involve fundamental analysis, requires general market awareness and will entail participation in the wider capital markets team. As a prospective intern, the candidate’s knowledge of fundamental equity research and analysis as well as the understanding of drivers that influence businesses across different sectors will be vital.
    • The candidate will also need to have a good understanding of ETF regulatory guidelines and product structures to provide insight on the evaluation of a range of local and foreign ETFs. The candidate may possibly write ETF research notes which entails conducting macro/micro research to identify developments that could impact ETFs covered by Intellidex.
    • Essential requirements are (do not apply if you do not meet these requirements as your application will not be considered):
    • Preferably Honours in investments, finance, economics or accounting
    • CFA (strong intention to pursue, enrolled or level 1 completed)
    • Strong knowledge of financial markets

    Preferred requirements are:

    • Able to provide examples of previous research reports/ fundamental equity research and analysis would be advantageous
    • CFA (enrolled or level 1 completed) with a strong academic background
    • Strong modelling and writing skills and attention to detail
    • Curiosity, creative thinking and problem solving
    • High level of technical skills in Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint

    Working as an intern, your role will include:

    • Financial analysis, modelling and valuation
    • Preparing presentations, equity reports, ETF notes as well as any other industry-related research
    • Exposure to a wide range of clients and projects within capital markets

    Manager: Macroeconomics and Reform Policy

    • The right candidate will be fluent in these issues and will be given extensive exposure to senior decision makers in both the public and private sectors – offshore and onshore. You will also build a public profile over time. You will work across a large range of different complex research issues for a broad range of client types and delivery styles.
    • You will take day-to-day responsibility for client delivery of highly regarded and widely read regular periodical research products (covering macro, political and structural reform policy related issues), ad hoc (often real-time/intraday) research requests from subscription clients and short- and long-term project work for clients – all under direction of the line Managing Director.
    • There will be an opportunity to work on similar issues in other jurisdictions on the continent as our business increasingly expands there in the coming years though this will not be a focus to start with. The expertise you have – and build – in this role will allow you to be exposed to and contribute to a broad range of projects across the rest of the firm including with bank strategy, capital market development and social economy work.

    • A deep understanding of and well founded opinions about the current macroeconomic and policy issues in South Africa

    • A strong interest in regional and global macroeconomic issues

    Preferred requirements are:

    • Some area of structural reform policy specialism such as energy, logistics or similar

    Manager: Market Research

    • Our clients rely on us for evidence-based recommendations. The Market Research Manager will be overseeing research focused on sophisticated clients, high-net worth individuals, top-level business and finance decision-makers, but occasionally extending to other audiences. The role requires expert-level working knowledge of designing, planning, and conducting of qualitative and quantitative research.

    The ideal candidate should have:

    • An advanced degree in a social science with extensive experience in primary research.
    • Experience at a senior level either in a market research function of a large financial services company or specialist market research agency
    • At least five years’ direct experience on market research projects
    • Experience in business development
    • Examples of research reports written based on original primary research such as surveys or interviews with respondents
    • Experience in managing complex research projects and overseeing teams working on them

    The role will involve supervising original primary research. It involves analysing information collected and writing reports providing detailed insight into the data. Occasionally it requires presentations of report results to clients and the public at large.

    Performance will be judged by the delivery of high quality research projects and reports, as well as engagement with clients and other audiences. You will also share responsibility to attract business for the market research practice.

    Programme Director

    • We are looking for a leader to take primary responsibility for managing the operations of the programme on a one-year fixed term contract (with the possibility of extension based on performance of the programme). The position will have a team of five staff working solely on the project and supported by several senior consultants from Intellidex. The position will report into a board of international and local advisors.

    The ideal candidate must have:

    • Strong leadership skills having managed a team working nationally in South Africa
    • Experience in the philanthropic field, specifically in youth employment programmes
    • Excellent organisational and communication skills
    • Project management experience
    • Performance management experience
    • Ability to problem solve and come up with innovative solutions to unique situations which may arise
    • Excellent data interpretation and writing skills
    • Proficiency in MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint
    • At least have a master’s degree in development or related
    • Academic and professional research experience related areas is not essential but would be advantageous

    Senior Banks Analyst

    • We are looking to strengthen this core function of our business by hiring a financial analyst to work specifically on banks in South Africa, as part of a dynamic research and consulting team.
    • The right candidate will have a background as a sellside or buyside equity analyst or in financial research on banks for a consulting firm. They must be comfortable with indepth financial analysis of banks, generating revenue forecasts as well as narrative reports interrogating strategy.
    • This is a senior-level position with opportunity to grow into leadership in either research or consulting. The right candidate will be expected to become a recognised thought leader in South Africa on the banking sector.
    • The position will involve ongoing analysis of bank financial and market share performance including developing earnings models and forecasts. Outputs would be both routine reports on bank performance and research support for project work. This will include monthly reports on key issues arising in the sector. There is room for creative research on non-financial drivers of bank performance too, as well as input into financial sector policy development. You will also be expected to support business development, building your contact network in the sector and products that deliver to market demand.
    • Clients include investors with an interest in bank debt and equity exposures, and financial services clients in supporting strategy development alongside our strategy consulting function and our macro-political advisory business. The role is collaborative, working closely with our fixed income, equity and strategy research analysts.

    The ideal candidate will have:

    • A degree in finance (or similar), CFA or CA(SA)
    • Five years’ experience in a research function at an investment bank, financial consulting firm or ratings agency specialising in banks
    • Good knowledge of South African financial sector laws and regulation
    • A history of creative research output and original thinking
    • Excellent communications and writing skills, and able to present to clients
    • Excellent Excel skills
    • Stata and SQL experience or similar
    • PowerPoint, Word
