What the job entails

• Working closely with the Editor and Art Director to conceptualise and design editorial and advertising pages;
• Picture sourcing and editing;
• Creating marketing and digital assets;
• Proactively finding references and generating fresh design and editorial ideas;
• Giving creative input into content;
• Preparing and finalising pages for print and digital;
• Archiving;
• Staying up to date with international design trends
• Ensure all layouts comply with magazine style guide;
• Ensure all retouching is of quality required by magazine and meets deadlines;
• Conduct final checks on layouts and export layouts to print ready PDF’s

What you would need

• Tertiary qualification in design.
• 2-3 year’s work experience as a designer.
• Knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite packages, including InDesign and Photoshop.
• The ability to work to and meet strict deadlines.
• Digital capabilities will be beneficial ie. Canva, IN5, Shorthand

Job description:

Netwerk24 is looking for a graphic artist to join its award-winning team. Work as part of a creative team in the dynamic world of journalism and online news. Create compelling graphics and content for the online news platform, as well as for newspapers. Excellent design skills, an interest in journalism, data journalism, and working under tight deadlines is a requirement. A good understanding of Afrikaans and English is necessary, as well as an interest in general news events.

 Responsibilities:

• Work on projects, collaborating across teams on ideation, creation and implementation
• Create creative flawless static and animated graphics for use in print and online media
• Use existing assets and archive photos to create relevant and up-to-date content
• Stay at the forefront of design trends
• Create 2D animation, motion graphics, GIFs etc.
• Photo manipulation on occasion
• Shift work on occasion

Requirements:

Qualifications: A relevant degree or diploma in design

Experience: Minimum 3 years experience in the media sector as a graphic artist

Skills and Abilities:  

• Fluent in Afrikaans and English
• Good working knowledge of the Adobe Creative Suite, specifically experience in Adobe Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator and AfterEffects,
• Good working knowledge of Microsoft 365
• Creating content for various platforms and doing the relevant preparation and quality control before publication 
• The ability to create designs and animated graphics and an understanding of the latest innovations in digital and social media design
• Drawing ability would be beneficial
• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment that requires adaptability, meeting strict deadlines, internal processes and brand guidelines
• The ability to work independently as well as in a team
• The desire to learn and offer new skills especially regarding digital content
• The ability to demonstrate innovative, creative ideas
• Work and time management: The ability to plan and carry out work in a time-bound and efficient manner

Duties                                                 

Ensure that the team delivers sub, rewrite and layout work that meets the highest journalistic standards to offer a quality product to Netwerk24 and the newspapers' readers and help ensure that the publications fulfill their watchdog role in society by factual and ethical reporting that is compellingly written and packaged.

Ensure that deadlines are met,

Manage a team of subs, freelancers and pagers in such a way that they function efficiently and motivated in a stressful environment.

Stay on top of the news and daily events so people are quickly steered in the right direction to do the most important work first.

Skills and competencies

• Strong leader who can manage a large team in a stressful environment
• Good communication ability
• The ability to work in a digital, multi-platform environment
• Excellent language and sub-skills in Afrikaans
• A good news sense and feel for unfolding news that needs to be dealt with immediately
• The ability to respond quickly to news events and deploy the right people for each task 
• Excellent sub who can also quickly rewrite copy with the necessary knowledge of legal aspects and directives of the Press Code

Qualifications and experience

• An appropriate tertiary qualification
• More than 7 years of journalism experience, 5 of which must be in a production environment
• Management experience would be a plus – especially if it was in an editorial environment.

Media24 Lifestyle Division has an exciting freelance opportunity for a Lash technician at a new salon in the Foreshore of Cape Town.

• A basic retention fee + commission is payable.

 The ideal candidate will be certified and competent in:

•  Classic, Volume and Hybrid lash systems
•  Lash Removal
• Ability to do nail services (gel, soft gel applications etc.) or Hair services (shampoo, blow drying, operator) would be advantageous.

In addition, the ideal candidate would be someone who is passionate about the beauty industry and portrays great client care. Someone who is driven and works well in a team.  Someone with good communication skills.

• Basic computer knowledge expected. Experience in ESP would be advantageous.
• Required to have at least 1 year's experience in an established salon/spa.
• Able to work shifts as required.
