    Principal Technical Officer - Makhanda

    Main Objectives

    The purpose of the job is the management and administration of technical services to the Department.  This includes managing the staff and the infrastructure in the laboratories, workshops and vehicle pool within the department. Also responsible for the general infrastructure of the building.
     

    The requirements

    A relevant degree / Technical Diploma (NQF level 7) in Geology, Mineralogy, Geotechnical Engineering, or equivalent, with 4 years’ relevant experience where such experience includes:
     

    • Previous technical experience, preferably in geology, engineering and/or a relevant science field including experience in working in labs and workshops
    • Previous general maintenance experience and/or ability
    • Previous supervision experience
    • Previous experience working with budgets
    • A valid driver’s licence is necessary along with a valid PDP licence and first aid certificate are conditions of employment for this post. Candidates that are not in possession of the necessary licences and first aid certificate will be expected to obtain them during their probation period.
    • The Institution will be responsible for the costs involved in obtaining the necessary licences and first aid certificate. Failure to obtain the necessary licences and first aid certificate will mean that the appointment of the incumbent cannot be confirmed and the employment contract will be terminated.

    Residence Life, Support And Development Manager

    Main Objectives

    Responsible for the effective management of student life, support, and development ensuring that the Division provides meaningful support and interventions to enhance the students experience and holistic well-being at Rhodes University. Supports the Director in developing students’ leadership potential and ensuring that there is an effective and functioning student governance. Supports the Director in managing the day-to-day operational activities of the Division of Student Services and Development (DSSD) and manages the Residence and Oppidan system, ensures that residences are suitable for living and learning. The incumbent is further responsible for policy development and compliance, training, and development as well as planning and compilation of reports. Supports students with disabilities and oversees effective communication with students and other stakeholders.

    The requirements

    • Bachelor’s Degree (NQF Level 7) with a social science major, with approximately 7 years’ relevant working experience where such experience includes: -
    • Previous experience within the higher education sector that has required a high level of interaction with students, dealing with issues and challenges that face students
    • Previous supervisory and/or management experience
    • Previous experience in dealing with people with disabilities
    • Previous experience in the residence system would be an added advantage
