    Job description

    • The Senior Director reports to the Senior Executive Director. The role serves as a member of the Senior Leadership Group and is critical in creating a holistic university experience for students by providing support, resources, and opportunities that contribute to their personal and academic success. This division is responsible for a wide range of services and programs that contribute to the personal, social, and cultural growth of students.

    The University is seeking to appoint an exceptionally motivated and energetic leader who will be expected to:

    • Develop and implement a comprehensive strategy for the portfolio in accordance with the University’s Strategic Plan.
    • Provide leadership over the portfolio’s policies and processes to enhance student success, engagement and overall satisfaction.
    • Implement initiatives to support the vast student populations, fostering an inclusive campus culture, and ensure equitable access to educational resources and opportunities.
    • Raise the level of student leadership to international standards by creating a learning and caring environment and community where strong, effective, responsible, disciplined, and accountable leadership is developed.

    • Develop, implement, and support policies and activities to promote student life and governance, student health, wellness, and welfare, as well as student ethics and governance.
    • Develop and implement programmes and initiatives to prevent crises and proactively address student needs.
    • Ensure high-quality divisional governance, administrative and systems functioning.
    • Interact with the Office of the General Counsel to ensure compliance with relevant laws and regulations related to student affairs and campus life.
    • Ensure the effective, responsible, and efficient management and utilisation of the division’s finances and resources.
    • Establish and nurture collaborative relationships with faculties, staff, students, and external stakeholders, as well as national and international partnerships.
    • Oversee and implement innovative staff development and management initiatives, including retention and recruitment.

    Minimum requirements

    • Master’s degree (NQF 9).
    • Substantive and acknowledged academic stature.
    • At least five years of proven experience in university management, particularly the management of student affairs.
    • In-depth understanding of current national and international debates around approaches to student affairs, student ethics, judicial services, and student governance.
    • Sound knowledge of, insight into, and vision of the Higher Education sector – nationally, regionally, and internationally.
    • Ability to maintain and strengthen relationships with stakeholders and partners, nationally and internationally.
    • Demonstrated experience in fundraising external to the University environment.
    • Ability to manage the portfolio’s finances and resources effectively and efficiently.
    • Demonstrated leadership at all academic levels and in staff recruitment mentorship and development.
    • The capacity for strategic leadership and operational excellence within the portfolio.

    Senior Lecturer (Phytotherapy) (Faculty of Health Sciences: Department of Complementary

    • The successful candidate is expected to undertake undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and research supervision respectively, contribute to the development and review of undergraduate teaching and curricula, and, where necessary, become involved in community outreach activities and CPD activities, in line with the discipline/departmental specific objectives. 

    Responsibilities:

    Facilitator I Professional Support (P8) (Academic Development & Support Division: Academic Development Centre)

     
    Responsibilities: The P8 Facilitator I: Reading and Mentoring Facilitator will have the main responsibilities: 

    • To design, facilitate and roll out a variety of learning and reading development strategies (SQ4R, IPSO, ASPIRE etc) focusing on UJ amongst others reading development as part of reading in the discipline (RID).
    • To develop online materials and online course contents (study skills, time management, exam writing skills, literacy related skills etc.) for undergraduate and Postgraduate (honours) students.

    Lecturer (Faculty of Science: Department of Botany and Plant Biotechnology)

    • The Department of Botany and Pant Biotechnology seeks to appoint a Lecturer in the Department on a permanent contract.     Lecturer (Faculty of Science: Academy of Computer Science & Software Engineering)

    Responsibilities:

    • Overall: To perform academic, research, and associated administration activities in the department

    • Must have successfully contributed to projects days (within the Academy the Annual Projects Day is a showcase of senior student practical software development projects – approximately 60 projects annually)
    • Must have a record of successfully offering undergraduate modules over a wide range of the body of knowledge pertinent in the field of discourse.
    • Must have successfully mentored and assessed the marking of third year practical year projects on a level acceptable to the British Computer Society.
    • Must have experience of the BCS accreditation process or equivalent academic certification processes.
    • Must pass a practical programming assessment as determined by the Academy of Computer Science and Software Engineering.

    • Experience of managing the auditing of all answer scripts for all examinations of both Computer Science and Informatics on both undergraduate and postgraduate level is a strong recommendation.
    • The proven ability to co-supervise master’s studies to completion.
    • The ability to successfully supervise at minimum 2 honours research projects, according to the standards of the BCS.
    • Must supply proof of formal evaluation, including student evaluation, as a successful teacher/lecturer by an academic institution.
    • Must have proof of a good class pass rate in undergraduate courses
    • The above competencies may additionally be assessed via live lectures and programming ability assessments 

    Recommendations: 

    • Membership of the BCS is a strong recommendation.
    • At least 2 years experience of organizing and managing student assistants and tutors for both Computer Science and Informatics is a strong recommendation.
    • NRF Y rating highly desirable (or of an equivalent internationally accepted standing covering the same criteria as the NRF system)
