    Technical Applications Specialist - Fixed-Term Contract

    • The Technical Applications Specialist (remote) is responsible for providing first-line Support, virtually to internal and external customers e in customer laboratories. Introduce AM assays, applications and systems in customer laboratories. Plan and conduct customer training at customer site or in Abbott training facilities. Provide first level problem solving support at customer site. Support local Sales and Marketing organizations by providing demonstrations of AM systems and applications in customer laboratory and during congresses or user group meetings.

    What you will do :

    Customer & Technical Support

    • Provide first and second-level technical support to internal and external customers via phone, email, chat, i.e Remotely from Office, and/or occasionally  on-site visits if needed.
    • Troubleshoot complex application, assay, or system issues and identify root causes.
    • Manage and resolve customer complaints in line with quality and regulatory requirements.
    • Escalate critical or recurring technical issues and contribute data to product improvement initiatives.

    Pre-Sales Support

    • Deliver technical product demonstrations to customers and sales teams.
    • Provide technical input and support for tenders and sales activities.
    • Support exhibitions, congresses, and user group meetings with presentations and demos.

    Training & Knowledge Transfer

    • Develop and deliver technical and application training for customers and internal stakeholders.
    • Set and maintain high standards for molecular diagnostics knowledge transfer.
    • Conduct training on-site, remotely, or at company facilities.

    Collaboration & Organizational Support

    • Act as a communication link between global technical teams, sales, marketing, and service organizations.
    • Support new product launches and track performance in customer laboratories.
    • Participate in technical meetings and contribute expertise as needed.

    QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERTISE:

    Education:

    •  A tertiary qualification in Medical Technology OR Biochemistry OR Related is essential (ideally a molecular based study )

    Experience:

    • A minimum of 1 years’ experience having in a laboratory environment with focus on molecular diagnostic systems and assays, or having studied a Masters, or Phd in the Molecular field,
    • Experience in a Product Specialist, remote Application Specialist, Technical Support, or similar role within the molecular diagnostics industry is highly desirable
    • Excellent knowledge of common molecular biological techniques, required for the support of highly demanding product portfolio of AM, e.g. Nucleic Acid Extraction, PCR, Sequencing, FISH
    • Excellent communication skills to build and maintain positive relationships with internal and external customers.
    • Ability to effectively solve customers’ technical problems by phone, email, webinar and in person at a client site. 
    • Outstanding customer care skills. A strong desire to work with customers to understand their needs and recommend Abbott solutions that accomplish their scientific goals.
    • Fluency in English language is a requirement, including the ability to write reports, technical documents and analytical problem descriptions.
    • Other language skills will be a distinct advantage.

    Therapy Specialist – South Africa

    • As Therapy Specialist – TAVR/TAVI , you will be responsible for developing and expanding TAVI therapy within existing and new hospital accounts across South Africa. You will lead market assessments, identify growth opportunities, onboard new centers, and work closely with internal Abbott teams and distributor partners to deliver sustainable therapy growth.
    • You will act as a trusted clinical and strategic partner to cardiology teams, supporting procedures, education, and long‑term adoption of Abbott Structural Heart solutions.
    • This role may be based either in Johannesburg or Cape Town

    What You’ll Do:

    Territory & Account Management

    • Map the South African TAVR market and identify new target accounts
    • Analyse referral pathways and patient flow within hospitals
    • Identify key clinical and economic decision‑makers within cardiology teams
    • Drive therapy awareness through clinical evidence, education, and data
    • Establish and develop Centers of Excellence and Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs)
    • Achieve regional therapy growth and financial objectives

    Therapy Development & Clinical Support

    • Lead onboarding of new TAVR centers and users
    • Clinically support TAVR cases and promote therapy adoption
    • Drive utilization growth through training, workshops, and educational programs
    • Execute tailored therapy expansion plans aligned to market needs

    Cross‑Functional Collaboration

    • Work closely with regional sales, marketing, and therapy teams
    • Collaborate with EMEA training teams for user onboarding
    • Partner effectively with distributors to ensure alignment and execution
    • Track activity, outcomes, and implants using Salesforce.com
    • Provide regular reporting to management on market expansion initiatives

    Required Qualifications

    Education

    • University degree in Life Sciences, Medical Technology, or related healthcare field is essential

    Experience

    • 3–5+ years in sales or clinical roles within a cardiology hospital environment
    • Proven TAVR/TAVI therapy experience, including clinical case support is essential
    • Demonstrated success in market share growth and market expansion
    • Experience operating within a corporate, matrixed environment

    Additional Requirements

    • Willingness to travel 50%+ on a national basis

    Clinical Application Specialist Lead

    • The Clinical Application Specialist Lead ( BASED IN CAPE TOWN ) is a senior role responsible for guiding the implementation, optimization, and clinical integration of Abbott’s diagnostic instruments across the African region. This position combines deep scientific expertise with leadership capabilities to ensure high-quality service delivery, customer satisfaction, and improved diagnostic outcomes.
    • The ideal candidate is a PhD-qualified Scientist, or a Medical Doctor registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA), with a strong background in Pathology and clinical diagnostics, and proven experience in leading teams or mentoring professionals.

    What you will do:
    Leadership & People Management

    • Provide leadership and mentorship to a team of Clinical Application Specialists and Field Support Engineers.
    • Support performance reviews, coaching, and development plans to enhance team capabilities.
    • Foster a culture of collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement.
    • Act as a senior escalation point for complex application and customer issues.

    Scientific & Clinical Support

    • Deliver expert clinical and scientific guidance to internal teams and external stakeholders.
    • Support pathologists and laboratory professionals in resolving diagnostic application issues to improve turnaround times (TAT) and diagnostic accuracy.
    • Collaborate with global scientific teams to recommend product enhancements aligned with best practices.

    Education & Training

    • Design and lead educational programs for healthcare providers, laboratory technicians, and internal teams.
    • Conduct workshops and coaching sessions to improve in-field efficiency and technical proficiency.
    • Develop and maintain training materials and validation protocols for new assay implementations.

    Customer Engagement

    • Act as a key liaison between Abbott and clinical Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs), academic institutions, and healthcare providers.
    • Drive clinical messaging and product advocacy through strategic engagement and collaboration.
    • Support onboarding and training of new customers and ensure optimal instrument utilization.

    Operational Excellence

    • Lead troubleshooting and escalation processes for complex application issues.
    • Ensure compliance with Abbott’s SOPs, ISO standards, and quality systems.
    • Monitor and improve KPIs such as first-time fix rate, mean time to repair, and cost per  box.

    Research & Development

    • Initiate and support internal and external research projects related to current and future   diagnostic products.
    • Contribute to clinical validation studies and scientific publications.

    Qualifications

    • PhD in Biomedical Sciences, Molecular Biology, or related field or Medical Doctor (MD)  registered with HPCSA IS ESSENTIAL
    • Minimum 5 years’ experience in clinical diagnostics, laboratory medicine, or pathology.
    • Proven experience in application support, medical affairs, or clinical research within the  diagnostics industry.
    • Demonstrated experience in team leadership or people management.
    • Fluent in English (written and spoken); additional languages are an advantage.
    • Valid driver’s license and passport; willingness to travel extensively across Africa.
