    Farm ForePerson

    Purpose Of The Job
    As part of the Farm of the Future team, he or she is to make sure all field operations are executed correctly and timely. Supervising & leading the equipment operators, record their hours. Solve equipment breakdowns correctly and in time. Responsible for the deployment of On-farm Food and Sustainability program. Do ‘Off-season’ maintenance in the workshop. Record input usage per field (fertilizer, pesticides, fuel etc…). Co-operate with the Agronomist in execution of in-field trials.

    • “Off Season” preventive maintenance
    • Housekeeping in the yard, buildings and fields
    • Hand-on’ approach is required. You work with the team, and where required you do operate, repairs & maintenance yourself.

    Requirements

    • Minimum Grade 12 or equivalent
    • Preference will be given to candidates with a diploma/degree in Agriculture
    • At least 2 years Farm Supervision Experience
    • Valid drivers license
    • Experience in & knowledge of crop production.
    • Experience & Skills in Operation and Adjusting Farm machinery
    • Knowledge of GPS systems and electronic equipment controls
    • Experience and skills in servicing, maintaining and repairing of farm machinery (specifically on auto- electrics and hydraulics).
    • Candidate must be safety conscious and have good supervising skills and work well under pressure. .
    • He or She must be able to execute jobs independent and have good communication skills (in English) towards the farm team and farm visitors.
    • The job requires working overtime, and during weekends/public holidays when it required.
    • Computer literate (MS Office)

    Farmers Clerk

    PURPOSE OF THE JOB:

    • To offer clerical and related services to Administration Department on a daily basis, performing daily data capturing, reports, banking etc.

    KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS:

    • Schedule Loads on PCR, as per list from Agricultural Department
    • Add Trip code for transport and contract per load on PCR before allocating
    • Ensure that you timeously receive CD’s (Control Document) from Quality Department
    • Check and verify information as to correct vendors, weight received
    • Allocating and invoicing of loads on PCR
    • Down load daily intake from PCR and update Farmers spread sheet on excel
    • Liaise with Field Officers and Farmers on intake/queries
    • Controlling of BIN movement, check and balance to weighbridge
    • Update BIN Recon and e-mail it to Marble Hall
    • Receive BIN CD’s(Control Document) from Marble Hall and update recon
    • Invoice Seeds on SAP ERP system
    • Receive transport delivery notes from Weighbridge and calculate charges
    • Receive schedules from Transporter match them up with delivery notes
    • Receive transport invoices from Transporter
    • Invoice per delivery note and load on PCR
    • Filling of all paper work
    • Run Farmers statements from SAP, reconcile to spread sheet and prepare for payments
    • Prepare separate spread sheets or schedules for Kaap Agri
    • Get necessary signatures and send to Finance for processing
    • Ensure information is received 2(two) weeks before pay date
    • Prepare transport accrual / Provision send to Cost Accountant and Senior Accountant
    • Reconcile Transport statement and down load from SAP
    • Send payment request to Creditors Controller
    • Manual BIN invoices received from Marble Hall must be invoiced on PCR per Farmer
    • Prepare transport payments on monthly basis and update Transport excel file
    • Loskop and Highveld Relief fund(Insurance)Peas, Beans, Corn Premium charged to Farmers on PCR

    EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

    • Ability to communicate with Farmers for queries relating to payments
    • Team Player(Inter act well with colleagues and Mangers)
    • Deadline driven when come to weekly and monthly payments and reconciliation of accounts
    • Work well under pressure with little super vision
    • Computer Literate in excel, Word and SAP ERP System
    • Able to work accurate and well with figures

    Trials Officer

    PURPOSE OF THE JOB:

    As part of the Agronomy team, the Trials Officer will be responsible for assisting with field trials (planning; implementation; monitoring) in order to evaluate new potato varieties and optimization trials (N; plant population; etc.). The incumbent will also be required to supervise temporary labour on the trial site as needed, including maintenance of equipment and general housekeeping, assist with soil water monitoring of potatoes planted in all regions and assist with aphid monitoring on McCain seed potato production fields.

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Planting, data collecting, harvesting and statistical analysis of statistical field trials on the Delmas and Western farm trial sites.
    • Planting, monitoring and evaluation of large-scale commercial trials on farms.
    • Maintenance of trials: see that irrigation is sufficient, regular scouting for symptoms of disease and insect damage.
    • Supervise the application of pesticides and fertilizer according the trial plan.
    • Labour supervision; complete and submit time sheets as required.
    • Ensure that OHS compliance
    • Maintenance of equipment and machinery on the trial site.
    • Responsible for more than 60 soil water probes, installation, removal, maintenance and record keeping on a software dashboard.
    • Set up water traps for aphid monitoring, weekly collection of samples and delivery to the University of Pretoria.
    • Receive visitors at the trial site.

    REQUIREMENTS:

    • Minimum BTech Agriculture or equivalent qualification
    • Minimum 2 – 3 years practical experience in trial planting, harvesting, data capture and relevant potato agricultural experience.
    • Possession of a valid driver’s license and willing to travel.
    • Knowledge and experience in executing on-farm trials
    • Knowledge & experience in (irrigated) crop production. Potato growing experience preferred.
    • Data collection, data processing and reporting
    • Computer literate (MS Office and statistical analysis software)
    • Experience in operation irrigation systems preferred
    • Self-driven, and able to execute jobs independent
    • Basic knowledge of GPS systems and electronic equipment controls

    Manager Agronomy

    Purpose:

    Develop priorities and time frames for agronomy research and development objectives. Align agronomy objectives and priorities with Agriculture strategic plan. Devise a strategy for continuous improvement of yield and quality of process potato and vegetable crops. Oversee dissemination of agronomy technical information. Maintain a high level of innovation. Interact with industry role players, locally and abroad. Represent McCain SA on global platforms and participate when required.

    Requirements:

    • MSc Agriculture – Agronomy/Crop Science/Plant Science/Soil science or related field
    • Minimum 10 years in agricultural science of which 5 years should be agronomy related, in a crop production and research role
    • 5 years experience in a managerial role.
    • Preferably registered as a Professional Natural Scientist with SACNASP (Natural Scientific Professions Act 27 of 2003)

    Key Performance Areas:

    • Determine potato and vegetable trials and allocate responsibilities
    • Oversee dissemination of agronomy technical information to potato and vegetable Agriculture teams

    Agronomist

    PURPOSE OF THE JOB:

    As part of the Farm of the Future management team, the Agronomist will be responsible for providing agronomic support in all aspects of planning, execution and monitoring of the farm’s crops.  The Agronomist is required to understand all aspects of irrigation management, seed quality, crop growth with the objective of continuously improving the yield and quality of the crops in the context of a Regenerative Agricultural production system.  The Agronomist will be responsible for managing and executing on-farms trials from trial design, implementation, data collection, recording, analysis and reporting.  In addition to monitoring the development, yield and quality of the crop through extensive sampling in the field the agronomist will be responsible for data recording in Farm Management System and their analysis and interpretation. 

    Agronomist will work closely with the Farm Foreman to make sure the crop is optimally managed and that the trials are smoothly implemented within the commercial farm operations.  Agronomist will be responsible to ensure the deployment of decision support systems (weather, irrigation scheduling, soil fertility, disease forecast etc.) and their integration in the daily farm activities. 

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Crop performance (yield and quality)
    • On-farm trial management
    • Data & sample collection, recording and reporting
    • Operate decision support systems and Farm Management Software
    • Crop irrigation.

    REQUIREMENTS:

    • BSc Agriculture (Honours) – Agronomy/Crop Science/Plant Production. Preference will be given to Masters in Agricultural Sciences
    • Minimum 4-5 years experience in an agricultural science field or agronomy related role.
    • Preferably registered as a Professional Natural Scientist with SACNASP (Natural Scientific Professions Act 27 of 2003)
    • AVCASA training preferred
    • Possession of a valid driver’s license and willing to travel extensively
    • Knowledge and experience in executing on-farm trials
    • Knowledge & experience in (irrigated) crop production. Potato growing experience preferred.
    • Data collection, data processing and reporting
    • Computer literate (MS Office and statistical analysis software)
    • Experience in operation irrigation systems preferred
    • Farm Machinery Operation Skills preferred
    • Self-driven, and able to execute jobs independent
