    Application Support Analyst: GCOS

    Position Purpose

    • The provision of support services relating to operational applications, not limited to the terminal operating system (TOS).
    • Support may be provided both to users of the systems and to service delivery functions such as computer operations and help desk.
    • Support typically takes the form of investigating and resolving problems and  providing information about the systems and equipment. It includes the monitorin of their performances.

    Position Outputs

    • Application Development Participate in the full development life cycle of business software including analysis, design, development, unit/load testing, deployment and maintenance of software system and implementation of business software for the enterprise, ensuring technical integrity and alignment with coding standards and principles. Provide 1st/2nd line support to TPT terminals utilizing the Terminal Operating (TOS) system for Bulk, Break-Bulk, Automotive and Containers commodities. Provide EDI support and general TOS support to TPT’s external clients such as Shipping lines, Clearing and Forwarding Agents, Original Equipment Manufacturer, etc. Training TOS users on existing and new GCOS functionalities. Monitoring all incoming HELPDESK calls to ensure that all issues are addressed. Interpret user requirements to define software solutions.
    • Pro-actively research technologies, developments, tool improvements and its processes as well as deployments to ensure increased productivity. Analysis of current applications; provide gap analysis and recommends a way forward on the to be nature of such applications. Design, develop and test the GCOS software application and all other integrating applications. Design and code new software functionality using code that is readable, maintainable, and re-usable. Contribute to user acceptance testing (UAT) and training material. Once the solution has been successfully tested, deliver the code into the applicable production environment.
    • Provide stakeholders with regular feedback on the technical design and timelines for solution. Help diagnose root causes of systems issues using problem-solving skills. Display and encourage an appreciation of teamwork and inclusivity. Apply accurate Programming, System Verification and Capacity Testing. Monitor performance of solutions and make recommendations to improve the performance and functionality of the solution. Log issues found in existing systems as internal change controls and ensure successful resolution of issues.
    • Business Intelligence and data analysis Responsible for gathering, analysing, and understanding business users’ data and analytics requirements and translating these requirements into analytics best practice technical solutions that meet the relevant business objectives. Extract data from various sources for the purposes of data profiling to create the technical BI requirements. Translate raw data into actionable recommendations and strategic insights that contribute to the overall success of the organization. Create and maintain data visualizations, reports, and dashboards to communicate complex data findings effectively.
    • Collaborate with departments to provide actionable insights, monitor KPIs, and drive data-informed decision-making. Delivering interactive presentations and generating reports for efficient data dissemination to a diverse audience. User Interface and user experience design . Apply user-centred design principles to enhance usability, accessibility, and overall user satisfaction. Perform user research and craft personas, user stories, and user flows. Develop wireframes, mock-ups, and high-fidelity prototypes to convey design concepts and solutions effectively.
    • Conduct usability audits to pinpoint areas for improvement. Provide first line and second line support for inhouse and third-party applications. To identify any product problems and possible new features for future developments. To be able to report and document any Bugs and/or Bug fixes experienced on software/hardware products. To provide software training on all products if required to do so daily. To assist in the implementation of Support Tools/Processes and the management thereof. Project documentation and administration Project administration of business intelligence, applications development and user interfaces and user experience related projects. Ensure that all applications related documentations are filed correctly and available when needed.

    Qualifications and Experience

    • Driver’s license code 08 Travel as required and approved. Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or relevant IT Qualification (NQF 7) 3 -5 years proven experience in applications development, business intelligence, Applications Support, User Interface / User experience. Number of years with lower-level certificates/qualification Relevant NQF 5 (120 credits) Min 8 years experience relevant applications development, business intelligence, Applications Support, User Interface / User experience. Advantageous Visual Studio ASP.Net / MVC / IIS / VB.net / C# Microsoft SQL / JAVA Oracle Certification and/or APEX Certification. Basic HTML/CSS.

    Data Base Administrator: Oracle

    Position Purpose

    • Transnet SOC operates 9 of its Transnet Port Terminals (TPT) marine terminals using GCOS as its Terminal Operating System (TOS). End users of the TOS include internal employees and external customers from all over South Africa. The TOS is used in a 24/7 environment for planning and operational execution.
    • The TOS team is based at TPT’s Head Office in Durban and reports to the GCOS Service Delivery Manager.
    • The Oracle Database Administrator is responsible for the design, development, implementation, configuration, maintenance, performance, integrity, and security of all the organization’s new and existing Oracle databases. The individual plays a crucial role in ensuring the smooth operation of all Oracle databases.

    Position Outputs

    • Administration Develop and maintain technical and implementation plans. Update technical documentation on a regular basis to ensure it is current and up to date. Maintain technical configurations in accordance with related policies and procedures. Record time allocation per task for project management and capitalization purposes. Ensure all database change and release management tasks are completed in accordance with the policies and procedures. Contribute and manage database related changes through its lifecycle. Contribute to the knowledge base for database administration staff. Create end-user-friendly documentation that adheres to standard operating procedures (SOP) and best practices. Create and maintain high-level activity plans with scheduling timelines for project tasks and activities.
    • Participate in planning sessions to gather and develop database requirements. Participate in business and technical discussions related to database solutions. Formulate reports of project technical activities. Ensure that all pertinent documentation is kept up to date.
    • Technical Database Design Work with developers and analysts to design efficient database structures that meet the organization's requirements for data storage and retrieval. Database Installation and Configuration Install and configure database software according to best practice and the organization's needs and policies. Build database systems of high availability and quality. Database Security Manage database security, including user access control, data encryption, and implementing security policies to protect the database from unauthorized access and data breaches. Identify, report, and manage database security issues, audit trails, and forensics.
    • Database High Availability, Backup and Recovery Configure and manage high availability solutions like ORACLE Server Always On Availability Group, ensuring database availability and data protection in the event of failures. Develop and implement backup and recovery plans to ensure that data is protected and can be restored in the event of a failure or disaster. Ensure database backup/restore strategy meets the business’s Recovery Point Objectives (RPO) and Recovery Time Objectives (RTO) Regularly schedule, monitor, and report on full and incremental backups. Conduct the backup and recovery test procedures periodically
    • Performance Monitoring and Tuning Monitor database performance, identify bottlenecks, optimize, and enhance database performance through query optimization, index tuning, and other techniques. Refine and automate regular repeatable, mundane database tasks. Define and implement event triggers that will alert on potential database performance or integrity issues. Database Maintenance Perform regular maintenance tasks such as updating software, applying patches, and managing storage to ensure the database operates efficiently and reliably. Data Integrity and Compliance Ensure that data stored in the database is accurate, consistent, and compliant with regulatory requirements and organizational standards. Secure data with precise access controls, authentication, and authorization mechanisms. Uphold data integrity.
    • Troubleshooting and Issue Resolution Monitor database health and performance including incident and problem management. In real-time, diagnose and troubleshoot database issues, identify root causes, track and implement solutions to prevent recurrence. Assist the application specialists with any application issues associated to the database. Documentation and Reporting Maintain documentation of database configurations, procedures, and standards, and generate reports on database performance and usage.

    Qualifications and Experience

    • Relevant Qualification / National Diploma in Information Technology/Computer science (NQF 6/7) Minimum 5 years’ experience in ORACLE Server Database Administration. Preferably 1 year supervisory or specialist DBA related experience. A successful track record of supporting and managing ORACLE Server, including High Availability. * Experience supporting and working with cross-functional teams in a dynamic environment. Advantageous: Transnet leadership Development Programme Advantageous certification o ORACLE Server related certification.     Position Purpose

    • Transnet Freight Rail (TFR) invites suitable, unemployed South African graduates between the ages of 18-35 to apply for a two-year graduate development programme, within various functional areas to be provided with both the institutionalised knowledge and on-the-job training to help you build a solid work experience to increase prospects of employability. The programme is structured and mentored for twenty-four months and candidates progress is assessed after every six months to ensure that the programme meets the expectations of both the candidate and TFR.

    Systems Analyst

    Position Purpose

    • The specification and design of IT solutions to meet defined business needs. The design, creation, testing and documentation of new and amended programs from supplied specifications in accordance with agreed standards. Ensure smooth operations of relevant IT systems that complement the business. The incumbent is involved with the development, maintenance, and enhancement of TPT’S Terminal Operating system (TOS) functional areas of the TOS; in order to meet the TPT’S Commercial as well as Sales & Marketing business needs and processes.
