    Shift Artisan - Make & Utilities

    JOB PURPOSE

    • Lead across preventive equipment maintenance services on sophisticated high-speed, processing, Utilities and ETP equipment to ensure continuous operation of machinery and production processes. Subject matter expert on mechanical/Electrical equipment in area of responsibility to ensure equipment availability and reliability. Performance aligned across the business unit consistent with Unilever goals and business unit Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to include safety, quality, productivity and customer service. 

    WHAT WILL YOUR MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES BE

    • Undertakes all non-specialized maintenance within specific unit of responsibility within definition
    • Coaches and develops the engineering skills of other maintenance and operational staff
    • Makes recommendation for continuous improvement
    • Involved in WCM activities. Works within defined Engineering and SHE Policies and Standards
    • Engineering: Diagnoses and interprets problems (fault finding) to optimize production output and with own team carries out the plant repairs
    • Ensures that service levels are maintained at the required standards by carrying out all breakdown, preventative and predictive maintenance effectively
    • Drive breakdown reductions off analyzing breakdowns, complying with the PPM requirement and implementing Continuous improvements
    • Participates in strategic engineering plans to deliver maintenance and breakdown reduction benefits (RCM)
    • Identifies the major engineering losses in his area and investigates using Kaizen problem solving methodology. (Fishbone, 5 Why etc.)
    • Ensures that Company safety rules and regulations are adhered and maintaining   Unilever safety and 5S standards
    • Draws up, Coaches and develops engineering skills to other maintenance and operational staff using OPL and SOP’s 3. Key Requirements
    • N3 AND Trade Test Electrical/ Millwright
    • Experience in Utilities- (Ammonia Refrigeration Plant, Steam Plant, Compressed Air, Electricity and Water

    Experiences & Qualifications

    • N5 Mechanical/Electrical qualification is essential
    • Holder of a Certified Millwright Trade
    • 3 years’ industrial maintenance experience – specifically across FMCG
    • Work independently and take initiative is critical
    • Collaborate across a team and *must be willing to learn and share skills with fellow technicians
    • Concise thinking and systematic problem solving is essential to implement cost-effective efficient engineering solutions
    • Physical Demands: Must be physically able to work in restricted spaces to access machinery and equipment components. Frequent standing and/or walking is essential.
    • *Must be able to move, lift or carry heavy objects or materials
    • Work Environment: Work is regularly performed near moving mechanical parts in a production setting. Work is frequently performed in high places and near conveyors and there is frequent exposure to hot, wet and humid conditions.

    Skills

    • Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving skills, with the ability to quickly identify issues and implement appropriate solutions.
    • Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain accurate documentation and records.
    • Effective communication skills to collaborate with internal teams, stakeholders, and external service providers.
    • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and diagrams.
    • Ability to work independently and make decisions in a fast-paced environment.
    • Strong Leadership skills
    • Ability to coach and guide engineering team and the operations teams 
    • Ability to manage stakeholders internally
    • The incumbent may also experience frequent exposure to sharp metal objects, hot liquid food products, caustic chemicals and risk of electrical shock as well as fumes, dust, mold and mildew in the atmosphere. Protective equipment must be worn around metal objects, liquid product and caustic chemicals when exposed to these conditions. Work is performed near moving forklift tractors.

    Plant Manager

    • We’re looking for a Plant Manager to lead end‑to‑end production and internal logistics operations, ensuring safe, efficient, cost‑effective, and high‑quality manufacturing performance. This role is critical in driving manufacturing excellence, continuous improvement, and operational reliability while building strong, capable teams.

    Key Responsibilities
    Plant Operations & Delivery

    • Lead all production and internal logistics operations from goods receipt, material storage, and internal handling through processing, packing, and dispatch
    • Deliver production commitments in line with agreed volume, quality, cost, and service targets
    • Review production progress daily and lead resolution of operational issues

    Manufacturing Excellence & Continuous Improvement

    • Drive continuous improvement across production and internal logistics using TPM and Manufacturing Excellence methodologies
    • Achieve annual committed Manufacturing Excellence savings
    • Identify and address bottlenecks, constraints, and improvement opportunities to optimise asset utilisation and reduce waste
    • Review production performance KPIs weekly through structured Kaizen forums

    Performance, Planning & Cost Control

    • Achieve operational performance (OP) targets for Volume, OEE, OR, and Cost
    • Define key capacity parameters and constraints to support short‑ and long‑term production planning
    • Prepare, manage, and control the factory operating plan and budget
    • Control manufacturing conversion and internal logistics costs (labour, waste, rework) against agreed targets
    • Partner with Supply Planning to manage production prioritisation, resource planning, and future growth requirements

    Quality, Safety, Health & Environment

    • Ensure all products meet Unilever quality standards and specifications through robust operator‑based quality systems
    • Work closely with the Site Quality Manager to ensure ongoing quality compliance, reviewed through monthly quality circles
    • Ensure a clean, safe, and compliant working environment in line with Unilever Corporate and Business Unit SHEQ standards
    • Lead the implementation and maintenance of ISO 9000 / 14000 / 18000 systems
    • Design, implement, and monitor systems for safe chemical handling, process safety, and people safety
    • Ensure appropriate safety training programs are in place and fully embedded

    Engineering, Maintenance & Asset Care

    • Partner with the Site Engineer to ensure factory capacity is sufficient to meet commitments and growth plans
    • Work closely with the Maintenance Manager to ensure high reliability and efficiency of production and internal logistics equipment
    • Maximise asset effectiveness through strong maintenance and reliability practices

    Stakeholder Engagement & Collaboration

    • Coordinate the availability of resources and inputs from internal functions and third‑party partners
    • Work in close liaison with Engineering, Quality, Supply Planning, and Maintenance teams to ensure operational alignment
    • Ensure timely and effective implementation of new product launches and innovations

    Leadership & People Development

    • Lead and develop Production and Internal Logistics teams to deliver world‑class operations
    • Build strong team‑working through cross‑functional projects and team‑building initiatives
    • Identify, develop, and strengthen leadership capability within the plant
    • Delegate accountability appropriately to drive ownership and performance
    • Assess capability gaps and implement training and development programs across production and internal logistics teams
    • Manage performance effectively, including addressing poor performance through courageous conversations

    Required Qualifications

    • Minimum 5 years’ management experience in Supply Chain or Manufacturing operations
    • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Chemical or Mechanical)
    • Hands‑on experience in World Class Manufacturing (WCM) / TPM
    • Strong FMCG manufacturing or fast‑moving production environment experience
    • Experience working with SAP ERP systems
    • Strong budget and cost management capability
    • Experience with IR / EE practices
    • Capability in performance management and managing poor performance
    • Strong leadership presence with the ability to lead courageous conversations
    • Solid understanding of SHEQ standards and systems
    • Demonstrated application of the 7 Key Skills of Management Effectiveness

    In-service Trainee (Quality)

    JOB PURPOSE

    • To assist with the quality assurance service to the business so that products produced by the company are fit for use by the consumers according to Company’s specifications and standards.
    • To drive zero defect culture within the organization.

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

    Operational

    • Carry out on-line trouble shooting to identify product quality issues and generating of NCA in the event that quality defects are identified. 
    • Carry out monthly checks discarding retention samples that are older than the specified retention period plus one-month.
    • Maintain an environment of 5s within retention storage area.
    • Participate in taste panels as approved tester and make decisions on status of products in terms of acceptance or rejection. (Mandatory that person does not smoke due to the negative effect this has on sensory evaluation which is a key component of the job)
    • Retrieval of samples from retention location and setting-up against Customer complaint sample and preparing all the necessary forms for evaluation.
    • Evaluating customer complaints against standards and completing evaluation documentation.
    • Prepare and write reports for consumer services team regarding investigated complaints
    • Review of ex-factory CRQS data, entry onto SAP and trend and analyse reports
    • Trending and analysing of CRQS EOLAS reports
    • Lead problem solving kaizens derived from Q prioritization matrix to obtain zero defects.

    Administrative

    • Daily filling of all reports/forms as listed below·    
    • Retention Sample Register and generating of NCA's.
    • Weekly reporting consumer/customer complaints
    • Kaizen review and archiving of documentation to take place every two months.
    • Interact with QC technicians ensuring that information regarding non-conformance is logged and addressed.
    • Interact with production in the communications of quality problems identified in the packing process (during shift handovers)
    • Run all consumer and customer complaint investigations and generates reports for CEC feedback.

    REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

    • Matric with Maths & Physical Science Working towards Diploma in Analytical Chemistry or Biotechnology S4 (Completing or in final year)Requiring 1-year in-service training
    • Candidates need to provide their Matric Certificate and Academic Transcript with their CV’s Basic computer literacy, i.e.: Excel, Word, and PowerPoint

    Preffered:

    • Atleast 0-1 years’ experience
    • Fully Operational in WCM QC tools and methodology
    • Working Knowledge of HACCP and GMP's.
    • Working Knowledge of OHS act and safe operating procedures.
    • Ability to analyze data and information
