    Medical Specialist - Psychiatry

    Requirements :

    Minimum Requirements:

    • Appropriate qualification that allows registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a medical specialist in psychiatry.
    • Master of Medicine in Psychiatry (MMedPsych) and or a Fellowship of the College of Psychiatrists of South Africa (FCPsychSA).
    • The ability to teach, train, do research and supervise research for academic degree purposes. Willingness to teach and train undergraduate and postgraduate students and other health care workers.
    • Grade 1- experience not applicable, registration with HPCSA as Medical Specialist Psychiatry.
    • Grade 2- 5 years appropriate experience as a Medical Specialist after registration with the HPCSA as Medical Specialist in Psychiatry.
    • Grade 3- 10 years’ appropriate experience as a Medical Specialist after registration with the HPCSA as a Medical Specialist in Psychiatry.

    Duties :

    • Management of psychiatry at Bertha Gxowa Hospital in the provision of clinical care to mental health care users, teaching of under- and post graduate students. Manage own service delivery.
    • Clinical service delivery: evaluation, management, care, treatment and rehabilitation of mental health care users in an acute psychiatric unit in a general hospital setting as well as outreach services where appropriate. Ensure patient care is promoted to meet the National Core Standards for health, Batho Pele Principles and the Mental Health Care Act, 17 of 2002, and other relevant medico-legal regulations, aligning the needs of the population served with facilities in the hospital.
    • Supervision of a multi-disciplinary group of mental health care providers and other relevant staff members. Manage and run the Specialist Psychiatry Outpatients Clinic. Lead the multi-disciplinary ward rounds for in-patients. Consultations for patients outside the psychiatry unit. Review and audit patients’ medical records.
    • Administration: Perform administrative tasks related to patient management and student training. Address patient complaints. Attend scheduled meetings with hospital management. Contribute to electronic databases for research purposes. Coordinate duty lists and staff allocations in the department. Ensure recruitment and retention of staff in the department.
    • Liase with other departments and with other hospitals, district mental health services where required. Academic: Provision of teaching and learning to ensure that both under- and post graduate students are taught the required skills and are provided with opportunities to learn in a safe environment. Assist in coordination of academic programs.
    • Conduct appropriate research: Develop own interest and publish appropriately. Support post-graduate students with research projects. Be willing to undergo continuous training and development programs.
    • Attend meetings and training as approved by supervisor. Comply with the Performance Management and Development System (Contracting, reviews and final assessment).

    Clinical Manager – Medical Services

    Requirements :

    Minimum Requirements:

    • Medical registration with the HPCSA . A minimum of three (4) years’ experience after registration with HPCSA as a Medical Practitioner.
    • Competencies: Strategic capability and leadership.
    • Change Management, planning and organizing, strategy, policy development, project management, financial management, client orientation and focus, people oriented. High level computer literacy.
    • Knowledge of GPG and Health Policies and procedures, relevant legislation and public service regulations. Knowledge Management, Clinical Governance, ability to support Monitoring, Evaluation and Reporting. Applicant should be prepared to undergo medical surveillance.

    Duties :

    • Responsible for the leadership and management of the delivery of clinical services to patients referred to Bertha Gxowa Hospital. Participate actively in administrative duties of the Departments.
    • See to it that quality assurance, including clinical audit, is conducted in the Department in line with National Core Standards and lead the department. Provide strategic leadership to the team.
    • Serve as senior member of the hospital executive management team. Support the Hospital Executive and General Management with the day-to-day running of the Department.
    • Functioning as a Medical Manager in the Hospital with an ambitious and innovative team, a Medical Manager will be expected to add value as follows: Provide and inspire medical services to deliver excellent Regional medical services. Plan, manage, monitor and evaluate activities of medical services directorate.
    • Plan, manage, and control resources allocated to medical service directorate. Assist the EXCO in the discharge of any responsibilities which have been delegated. Participate in the management of activities of Bertha Gxowa Hospital as a whole and attend all applicable management meetings.
    • Ensure the employment of previously disadvantaged individuals in terms race, gender and disability to enhance equity. Lead and manage the development of Functional Business Units (FBU’s).
    • Ensuring decentralized management and accountability and ensure adhere to clinical governance. Comply with the Performance Management and Development System (Contracting, reviews and final assessment).

    Pharmacist Assistant (Post-Basic) Grade 1

    Requirements :

    Minimum Requirements:

    • Grade 12/ Matric certificate and appropriate Post-Basic Pharmacist Assistant Qualification that allows Registration with the South African Pharmacy Council as a Qualified Post-Basic Pharmacist Assistant.
    • Registration Certificate with the SAPC as a Post-Basic Pharmacist Assistant. Proof of payment for current annual fees.
    • Less than five (5) years appropriate experience after registration as a Pharmacist Assistant (Post-Basic) with the SAPC. Computer Literacy (MS Office). Applicant should be prepared to undergo medical surveillance.

    Duties :

    • Own discipline, knowledge of relevant legislation, regulations, policies, implementation and information management, quality assurance and improvement programmes, leadership, and communication.

    Speech Therapist / Speech And Audiologist Grade 1

    Requirements :

    • Qualification in Speech Therapy or Speech Therapy & Audiology, Independent practice registration with HPCSA. Current registration with the HPCSA for 2025/2026

    Competencies:

    • Knowledge and skills in assessment and management of communication and listening in patient(s) with hearing loss.
    • Knowledge and skills in individual speech therapy and facilitation of support groups; family-focused intervention and development of listening and language in children and adults with hearing loss within an Early Childhood Intervention (ECI) approach.
    • Preference will be given to candidates with an additional certificate of post-graduate training in Auditory Verbal Therapy and to those who have experience in providing aural (rehabilitation to patient(s) with hearing aids and cochlear implants as well as those with experience in ECI.
    • Ability to work in a team and contribute to the planning, organisation and coordination of a clinical service. Ability to engage in solution-based problem solving. Display empathy for patients, promote advocacy and facilitate holistic treatment. Applicant should be prepared to undergo medical surveillance as an inherent job requirement.

    Duties :

    • To provide a complete package of care to patient with hearing loss, including assessment of communication, and listening; counselling, creation of joint intervention goals with the family; assisting in audiological management of these patiance; provision of individual and group therapy; facilitation of support groups; report-writing, teacher training.
    • Provision of intervention services in accordance with SACIG (South African Cochlear Implant Group) cochlear implant quality standards, best practice guidelines and engage in clinical research.
    • To work within a multidisciplinary team within professional boundaries. To engage in mentoring and audits. To comply with Performance Management processes. To participate in departmental teambuilding and projects.
    • To adhere to infection control procedures and assist with maintaining accreditation requirements. To participate in departmental research projects.

    Medical Officer Sessional (This Is a Re-Advertisement – Those Who Applied Before Are Encouraged To Re-Apply)

    Requirements :

    • Medical Qualification: MBBCh (or equivalent). Registration with HPCSA as an Independent Medical Practitioner at the time of starting employment.
    • ALS Courses, qualifications: Minimum of 2 current ALS courses of which one must be a medical course (e.g. ACLS, AMLS) and one must be a Trauma course (ATLS, ITLS or EMATT) (allowance of 3 months post-expiration); or DipPEC in lieu of ALS courses.

    • Shift work in the Emergency Departments of the joint academic and clinical department of Emergency Medicine, including rotations between Helen Joseph Tertiay Hospital (HJTH) and Rahima Moosa Mother and Child Hospital (RMMCH).
    • Manage a variety of Emergency Medicine clinical cases including medical, surgical, trauma. Promote evidence-based patient care. Clinical supervision and training of junior staff. Administrative duties pertinent to the practice of Emergency Medicine (including medico-legal documentation).

    Sessional Medical Specialist - Reconstructive and Plastic Surgery(This Is a Re-Advertisement – Those Who Applied Before Are Encouraged To Re-Apply)

    Requirements :

    • Appropriate qualification that allows registration with the HPCSA as Medical Specialist in Plastic Surgery. Registration with the HPCSA as Medical Specialist in a normal specialty.
    • Current registration with HPCSA for 2025/2026.
    • For Grade1: 0-5 years’ experience as Medical Specialist.

    Duties :

    • Provision of a comprehensive clinical service for patients at Helen Joseph Tertiary Hospital; provision of undergraduate and postgraduate medical student teaching; provision of supervision and training of registrars, medical officers, interns and nurses.
    • An ability to initiate and conduct research will be an advantage. Appointed candidate will be expected to strengthen the regional and district health systems by providing outreach programmes; to participate in all divisional, departmental and faculty meetings in order to facilitate effective teaching and research as well as to enhance continuing professional development; to maintain quality assurance standards and other departmental policies.
    • Attend meetings and training as approved by HOU. Comply with the Performance Management and Development System (PMDS) (contracting, mid-year reviews and final assessment).
