    Duties and responsibilities:

    • Assist with technical development and implementation of databases.

    Postdoctoral Research Fellowship - Sanral Chair in Science, Mathematics and Technology Education

    Duties and responsibilities:

    • Conduct innovative research in the following areas: teaching and teacher change in science or mathematics education; science or mathematics teacher identities; instructional leadership for science or mathematics education; and curriculum implementation studies in science or mathematics education.  
    • Co-author at least three (3) publication outputs per year in the form of DHET– accredited scholarly journal articles or books/chapters in books.
    • Initiate research projects and seek funding for them.
    • The renewal of the fellowship beyond the first year depends on satisfactory performance and the submission of an annual progress report.
    • Provide limited supervision and/or co-supervision at Honours, master’s and/or Doctoral level, where appropriate.
    • Register and reside as a postdoctoral research fellow at the UFS in Bloemfontein. 
    • Participate in relevant activities of the SANRAL CHAIR, Faculty of Education, Centre for Graduate Support and the Directorate for Research Development.
    • The successful candidate will be required to conduct innovative research and obtain evidence-based empirical data on current developments in science and mathematics education within the South African context and internationally.

    Eligibility Criteria:

    • Open to all South African and foreign nationals for full-time research at the University of the Free State.
    • Graduated with a relevant PhD degree, with a focus on Science or Mathematics Education and/or Instructional Leadership, within the last five years.
    • Successful candidates must remember that the fellowship will terminate once your PhD degree reaches the fifth (5th) year of graduation.
    • Successful applicants may not hold full-time salaried employment during the fellowship.
    • Successful applicants must be able to relocate to the UFS for the duration of the fellowship.

    Office Manager (Post Level 11) Job ID: 6021

    Duties and responsibilities:

    • Manage the diary.
    • Consolidate monthly, quarterly, and annual reports.
    • Vet queries and complaints directed to the office of the Senior Director and direct them to the relevant sections.
    • Proofread all submissions going out of the department, such as to governance structures of the university for example the University Management Committee, Rectorate, etc.
    • Coordinate travel and accommodation arrangements for the Senior Director and his deputies.
    • Stand in as a Finance Administrator when needed, performing all associated tasks, including procuring goods and services.
    • Generate task lists for reporting lines from meetings and follow up on tasks to be performed.

    Intern (in Office Administration/Office Management)

    Duties and responsibilities:

    • Manage the diary of the subject head (Qwaqwa Campus), which includes setting up meetings with the relevant departments, committees and/or external stakeholders.
    • Deal with general administration, including typing and dispatching faxes, emails, correspondence, reports, and schedules.
    • Provide assistance to other staff in the department as and when required, taking messages and making phone calls.
    • Obtain and appraise quotes, and process orders for all office requirements.
    • Purchase assets for the entire department, keep a record of all purchases and ensure that there are sufficient funds before purchasing items.
    • Book venues for events.

    Postdoctoral Research Fellowship (in Interdisciplinary Applied Sciences)

    Duties and responsibilities:

    Conduct innovative research in the following areas: 

    • Developing cost-effective testing methods for prohibited, illegal and unknown substances.
    • Improving existing analytical testing methods and developing new methods for prohibited substances ranging from small to large (peptides) molecules in urine, serum, plasma and dried blood spots.
    • Metabolism, longitudinal excretion patterns and identification of metabolites of known, designer, potential prohibited and illegal substances.
    • Initiate projects and seek funding for them.
    • Provide scientific support and direction to the interdisciplinary analytical groups in the laboratory.
    • Register and reside as postdoctoral research fellow at the UFS and participate in relevant activities of the School of Postgraduate Studies and the Directorate of Research Development. 

    Eligibility Criteria:

    • Open to all South African and foreign nationals for full-time research at the University of the Free State. 
    • Graduated with a PhD degree in a relevant discipline (bioanalytical/analytical/organic chemistry, forensic chemistry/toxicology, biochemistry, or equivalent) within the last five years.
    • Experience with complex systems’ analysis and dealing with data collection, curation, and interpretation.

    Lecturer/Coordinator: Disability Rights Unit

    Duties and responsibilities: 

    • Coordinate, manage and administer the work of the Disability Rights Unit. 
    • Identify, initiate and manage suitable advocacy and litigation cases for the Disability Rights Unit. 
    • Coordinate the drafting of policy documents for the Disability Rights Unit’s advocacy work. 
    • Generate funds for the Disability Rights Unit. 
    • Link and collaborate with the different branches of the legal profession, NGO and the South African Human Rights Commission in the Free State and nationally concerning disability rights advocacy and legal work. 
    • Contribute to the research/publication output of the Free State Centre for Human Rights (FSCHR) by publishing in accredited scholarly journals and books.

    • Teach in the FSCHR’s Interdisciplinary master’s degree in Human Rights. 
    • Collaborate with other entities within the UFS on disability rights-related initiatives. 

    Inherent requirements:

    • A doctoral degree in Law or related discipline on NQF Level 10 (for a permanent appointment) 

    or

    • Master’s degree in law or related discipline on NQF Level 9 (contract appointment: five years during which a PhD on NQF Level 10 in Law or related discipline MUST be obtained to be converted to a permanent position). 
    • Proven experience in the delivery of poster or oral presentations at conferences or equivalent activities.
    • Evidence of manuscripts produced that have the potential to be converted or submitted for publication in accredited journals.
    • A good academic record.

    Recommendations:

    Associate Professor

    • Proven experience in the presentation of research papers at national conferences, where there is evidence of peer review of papers.
    • Acted as an editorial board member of high-quality national scholarly journals.
    • Proven national recognition for specialist expertise and research leadership in a specific scientific area of scholarship.
    • An NRF rating of C3 or equivalent status.
    • A proven research record of relevant publications in national and international accredited journals
    • Proven experience in the supervision of graduated master’s degree and PhD students.

    Recommendations:

    • An NRF rating.
    • Knowledge of Corporate Law or Labour Law.
