    Internship: Heavy Vehicle Simulator Assistant Operator

    The CSIR has an internship opportunity for Interns: Heavy Vehicle Simulator Assistant Operator in the Transport Infrastructure Engineering impact area within the Smart Mobility cluster. The research group strives to effectively and efficiently deliver practical, innovative, knowledge-based solutions addressing the infrastructure needs of the transport sector through the accelerated testing of roads with the Heavy Vehicle Simulator (HVS) and associated research and data analysis. The group plays a leading role in the development, application and transfer of processes and technologies for the design, construction and maintenance of roads. This position is based in Pretoria.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Provide assistance in operation of the HVS to conduct HVS testing on roads
    • Provide assistance in mechanical and/or electrical maintenance of the HVS and associated equipment
    • Gather and record HVS machine related information, environmental data as well as all visual information
    • Conduct field instrumentation, survey measurements and data acquisition.

    Qualifications, Skills And Experience

    • A Technical diploma in an engineering related field;
    • Ability to liaise with HVS operator and project leader on a continuous basis to keep them informed on progress
    • Excellent Microsoft office skills ;
    • Good interpersonal and team skills;
    • Ability to work independently as well as in an interdisciplinary team;
    • Must be self-motivated;
    • Problem-solving and solution-seeking orientation;
    • Must have good communication and writing skills.

    Embedded Electronic Engineer (Hardware): Internet of Things (IoT)

    The CSIR has a vacancy for an Embedded Electronics Engineer (Hardware) in the Emerging Digital Technologies for fourth Industrial Revolution (EDT4IR) Research Centre within the Next Generation Enterprises and Institutions Cluster . The incumbent will be responsible to develop and do field implementations of electronic hardware and tools relating to Advanced Internet of things technologies for products in harsh environments of mines and electricity systems. This position is based in Pretoria.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Work in collaboration with researchers, engineers and other team members in the development and application of new IoT technologies to electricity systems and underground mining keeping up with the latest trends and innovations in that space;
    • Complete technical and/or research output-related tasks (e.g. co-develop electronic hardware and/or firmware, testing and verification) on brief, on budget and on time with high quality;
    • Assist the principal and senior engineers and technical leads with high-level system design and integration and contribute to implementation of the design;
    • Publish, report on, and document technical and/or research output-related tasks.

    Qualifications, Skills And Experience

    • A Bachelor’s degree in electronic engineering or related field with at least two years’ working experience in embedded hardware engineering with emphasis on:
      • Spice simulation;
      • Electronic circuit design;
      • Knowledge of hardware components, surface mount / through hole, suppliers etc.
      • ECAD tools for circuit board design and schematic capture;
      • PCB manufacturing, substrates, board finishes etc.
      • PCB assembly, rapid prototyping, pick and place etc.
      • Knowledge about IPC an advantage;
      • MCAD modelling related to PCB design;
      • MCAD / ECAD integration;
      • Jigs / Testing / Test instruments.
    • Experience in technical writing, such as preparing good quality technical reports for complex systems.
    • A Master’s degree in electronic engineering or related/relevant degree will be advantageous;
    • The following skills would be an advantage:
      • Embedded programming of MCUs, toolchains, scripting, versioning;
      • Knowledge of FPGAs, VHDL, testbenches, simulation;
    • Ability to multi-task in a dynamic environment while working accurately and meticulously;
    • Self-motivated, pro-active and able to contribute towards positive group dynamics;
    • Competencies: analytical thinking, attention to detail, customer service orientation, excellence/quality orientation, initiative, numerical reasoning, problem solving, verbal and written communication, logical thinking and presentation skills.
