About The Job

The CSIR has an internship opportunity for an Environmental Assessment Practitioner (EAP) in training in the Environmental Management Services research group, within the Smart Places cluster. The purpose is to provide graduates with an opportunity to gain practical work experience and development capabilities in environmental impact assessment, as well as related fields such as strategic environmental assessment, risk assessment, monitoring and evaluation, and sustainability frameworks and systems thinking. This position is based at the CSIR offices in Stellenbosch.

Key Responsibilities

• Work together with colleagues to develop our environmental assessment and management capabilities, through developing networks, growing the business, and building new competencies;
• Co-ordinate and manage environmental assessment studies, from the proposal and negotiation phases through to public consultation, information collation, report writing and communication of findings (under the supervision of a senior EAP);
• Conduct independent investigations as well as integrate information from across disciplines;
• Travel regularly within South Africa and to other African countries as required.

Qualifications, Skills And Experience

• An Honours degree in environmental science or in a field related to sustainable development, conservation ecology, environmental engineering, or planning;
• A Master’s degree in environmental science or in a field related to sustainable development, conservation ecology, environmental engineering or planning would be advantageous
• Short courses and further qualifications that include environmental legislation, geospatial analysis, systems thinking, and stakeholder engagement would be advantageous;
• Experience in application of scientific analytical research methodology;
• Problem solving skills and solutions-oriented approach;
• Capability in conducting independent investigations and trans-disciplinary integration;
• Critical grasp of national and international developments regarding sustainability issues;
• Valid South African Code B or EB driver’s licence.

About The Job

The CSIR has a vacancy for Senior Signal Analyst in the Radar and Electronic Warfare (REW) Impact Area within the Defence and Security Cluster. The incumbent will be responsible to perform research, development, knowledge application and technological innovation required for electronic support and electronic attack sensors operating in the microwave spectrum. The position is based in Pretoria.

Key Responsibilities

• Work closely with the Research Group Leader to provide inputs to the innovation and technology strategies;
• Mentor and coach engineers in various research and development projects;
• Apply and integrate systems thinking concepts to solve real-world problems;
• Research and develop innovative solutions within diverse knowledge domains, which could include domains such as Electronic Warfare (EW) Systems, Radar Systems, Radio-Frequency Systems, Antennas, Signal Processing, Algorithm Development, Software-Defined Radio, Statistical Analysis, Modelling and Simulation, etc.
• Lead the development of advanced signal processing algorithms;
• Analyse mathematical systems, their performance and induced system effects;
• Simulate and analyse operation-based systems;
• Simulate and undertake functional analysis of systems and subsystems;
• Implement algorithms on systems;
• Experiment with deployable systems to validate and improve algorithms;
• Experiment with operational systems to characterise and understand performance;
• Design and specify systems;
• Develop prototypes using high level language (such as Matlab, Julia, Python and/or C++)
• Liaise with and report to internal and external clients as well as stakeholders;
• Analyse system requirements, capabilities, and functionality.

Qualifications, Skills And Experience

• A Bachelor’s degree in electronic/computer engineering with at least five years’ experience in Electronic Warfare/Radar engineering environment in an analytical role.
• A Master’s degree will be an advantage.
• Post-graduate courses in the following will be an advantage:

1. Radar and/or Electronic Defence;
2. Signal processing;
3. Statistics;
4. Pattern recognition;
5. Sensor / data fusion.

• Signal processing or system analysis experience will be an advantage.
• Experience in Matlab, Julia, Python and/or C++. Proven experience in leading small and/or large project teams;
• Proven experience and willingness in mentoring and coaching junior and senior staff members;
• Proven experience and knowledge of EW product development project cycle: requirements, concept, design and development, testing, to market (client delivery);
• Working experience in signal processing and analysis and/or system analysis;
• Proven experience in client interfacing and relationship management.
• Knowledge of the following will be an advantage: Antennas, Radio Frequency (RF) systems, Electromagnetic Theory and Propagation;
• Knowledge of electronic hardware and software implementation;
• Technical report writing and presentations skills;
• Good communication skills (verbal and written).
