    Engineer: Physical Separation

    KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS:

    Financial sustainability

    • Prepare proposals under direct/limited supervision, including Open Call proposals.

    Execution, People and Planning

    • Perform routine scientific and engineering research using standard methods, procedures and equipment.  Act as Principal investigators on such projects.
    • Perform complex scientific and engineering research under supervision.
    • Design, operate and oversee discipline specific experimental work and ensure that procedures are complied with, and quality control and continual improvement are applied.
    • Collect and interpret data at a quantitative and qualitative level using discipline specific standard methodologies and procedures. Including the preparation of analytical and descriptive narratives. Ensure that the interpretation is based on sound scientific / engineering theory.
    • Plan and manage projects to ensure efficient use of time, equipment and facilities, including coordinating with others.

    Governance and Risk Management

    • Ensure proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies, promote continual improvement in the workplace, adhere to and enforce all SHEQ requirements.
    • Ensure that the project team understands and adheres to all SHEQ requirements.
    • As Principal Investigator responsible for the assessment and management of all risks at a project level.
    • May be responsible for equipment / facilities.

    Relationship Management and Reporting

    • Present at local conferences and publish conference papers, journal papers.

    Interactions

    • Staff in own division, across other divisions to head level; suppliers and vendors (engineers), clients/collaborators at technical level

    QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

    •  Minimum: B. Sc. Hons or 4-year Engineering degree.
    •  Ideal: MSc, MEng (NB: other lower degrees, must attain the minimum requirement to stay in this position)
    • 1- 2 years vocational experience following first graduation (BSc Hon/BEng)
    •  Must 2 - 3 years Physical Separation experience

    Project Engineer: Mine Closure & Rehabilitation

    Job description

    Construction Supervision:

    • Client representative on site for the projects
    • Responsible for the on-site quality assurance and conformance to designs and specifications
    • Ensuring compliance to statutory requirements as well as Mine Health and Safety Act requirements
    • Verify the measurement and calculation of quantities for payment certificate.
    • Address any on-site deviations to the scope, designs and specifications.
    • Monitoring and tracking of all construction activities and programme of works and ensuring the contractor complies with all agreed policies and procedures
    • Witness onsite quality tests and approve procured material.
    • Compile daily diaries and progress report.
    • Attend Progress Meetings and arrange and facilitate technical/coordination meetings.

    Project Coordination

    • Coordinate the execution of projects to ensure that the outputs / outcomes are in line with Mintek’s strategies and goals.
    • Manage and assess all project documents submitted by contractors, including scoping documents, bills of quantity, and budgets. 
    • Proactively manage tasks and activities to ensure that problems and delays are identified early and remedial action is instituted to minimise consequences.
    • Interact with key stakeholders to understand, anticipate and manage their expectations
    • Compile weekly project progress and financial reports.
    • Timely compilation of weekly and monthly project progress and financial reports.

    Design and Documentation

    • Prepare detailed mine rehabilitation designs including the production of construction drawings.
    • Compile tender documents, including specifications for all applicable works ensuring that all documents accurately capture the nature, size and scope of the project. 
    • Manage and assess all project documents submitted by contractors, including scoping documents, bills of quantity, and budgets. 
    • Project initiation including desktop studies and site investigations to produce scoping reports.
    • Conducting pre-feasibility studies and community engagement
    • Manage specialist sub-consultants like geotechnical specialists, surveyors etc.

    Stakeholder Management

    • Interact with key stakeholders to understand, anticipate and manage their expectations.
    • Interact and attend key meetings with law enforcement authorities and private security service providers.
    • Manage relations between the contractors and mining communities, ensuring that potential areas are managed or escalated to the client accordingly.
    • Security and team management for shafts installations
    • Prepare audit and finding reports for D&O programme
    • Budgeting and estimates for projects
    • Tender and technical evaluations
    • Statistical management of projects and costing. 

     SHEQ management

    • Ensure that effective SHEQ procedures are in place so that contractors and workers operate in a safe and healthy environment. 
    • Ensure compliance with applicable legislation at all sites where Mintek is operating including Mine Health and Safety Act.
    • Undertake risk assessments for own projects and review and approve contractor’s monthly SHEQ reports
    • Preparation of SOPs and review thereof
    • Preparation of standard management forms, letters, minutes templates etc
    • Contribution to the standardisation of tender documents, evaluation criteria and other key MCR documents and processes. 

    JOB KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:

    • MEng or/and MSc in Earth Sciences and related fields or relevant, ideal PhD in related fields.
    • Extensive knowledge of the mining industry or public sector, mining communities. 
    • 10 years’ experience in the project management of either mine closure and rehabilitation programme, civil engineering, concrete works and earthworks.

    Senior Engineer/Scientist: Measurement and Control (Instruments)

    Job description

    • Assist Research Group Leader/Head of Research to make technical decisions having an impact on the research direction and outcomes within the division.
    • Ensure that the products the division delivers appeal to a wide range of operations, which shields the discipline from the cyclical nature of the mining industry.
    • Ensure that the documentation of work and procedures is done and produce advanced professional level reports and publications.
    • Able to demonstrate eager to innovation, strategic thinking and to drive both operational efficiency and groundbreaking solutions.
    • Transform opportunities into proposals for funded research with in conjunction with other Research Leaders.
    • Ensure that SHEQ procedures are followed and project work is executed to produce valid conclusions and with maximum overall efficiency -technically and financially.
    • Prepare reports, presentations and publications at the level of an experienced professional.
    • Lead, guide, mentor and train junior staff.

    Minimum requirements

    Experience in working on the following MCD related products:

    • Advanced Process Control (APC)
    • Carbon Concentration Meter (C2 Meter)
    • Cynoprobe Cyanide Analysis
    • FurnStar Furnace Control
    • Software Competitor Analysis – PLC & DCS
    • Software – StarCS
    • Strong ability to drive MCD R&D projects towards new commercial offerings.
    • Commercialisation of products at advanced TRL levels.
    • Experience in attracting research funding.
    • Registration or eligibility for ECSA or SACNASP.
    • Evidence of prototyping, commercialisation of products and accreditation of methods will be an advantage.
    • Track record of research, supported by publications in peer-reviewed journals, patents, chapters and books.

    Minimum:

    • MSc/MEng in a relevant Engineering or Scientific field relating to automation, sensing technology, and platform technology.
    • PhD will be advantageous.

    Experience:

    • 3-5 years’ experience in research, knowledge-based organisations or relevant organisation
