    Environmental Monitors - Durban

    Requirements:

    • Grade 12, any post matric qualification will be an added advantage. A valid code 08 driver’s license.
    • Experience or understanding of oceans and coastal environment or related field and being in possession of Environmental Management Inspector certificate will be an added advantage.
    • Must have good verbal and written communication skills and the ability to work in a team. Must be computer literate.
    • The incumbent must be able to work independently with minimal supervision under extreme pressure. Be willing to travel and work long hours. Be physically fit.  

    Duties:

    • Conduct inspections along the coast to ensure compliance to permits and permit conditions in terms of Coastal Waters Discharge permits and Off-Road Vehicle permits. 
    • Identify and capture evidence on suspected illegal structures within a Coastal Public Property and refer for enforcement intervention. 
    • Identify suspected illegal discharges along the coast and within estuaries and refer for enforcement action. 
    • Conduct coastal patrols to identify all illegal activities related to the National Environmental Management: Integrated Coastal Management Act (Act 24 of 2008). Provide support during Compliance and Enforcement joint operations under Initiative 5 of Operation Phakisa. 
    • Collect information and data for planning of joint operations.

    Supervisor: Environmental Monitors - Durban

    Requirements:

    • A Nature Conservation / Environmental Management or equivalent qualification. Environmental Management Inspector training certificate will be an added advantage. Experience in a coastal environment or related field. Knowledge and understanding of Coastal Compliance Monitoring and Enforcement, ability to plan and execute compliance and enforcement joint operation, people management and a code 08 driver’s license.
    • Must be computer literate. Must have good organisation skills as well as verbal and written communication skills and the ability to work in a team.
    • Ability to work independently under extreme pressure. Experience in the supervision of staff. 

    Duties:

    • Provide the oversight role of all coastal monitoring activities within the area of responsibility. 
    • Plan, coordinate inspections along the coast to ensure compliance to permits and permit conditions in terms of Coastal Waters Discharge permits and ORV permits. 
    • Plan and supervise the identification and mapping of suspected illegal structures, illegal coastal discharges along the coast and within estuaries and prepare referral letters/reports for enforcement action. 
    • Coordinate a National Environmental Management: Integrated Coastal Management Act (Act 24 of 2008) conduct coastal patrols to identify all illegal activities related to.
