    Compliance Manager

    Job Purpose

    • The FAIS Centre of Excellence is a compliance function within Group Compliance that provides compliance oversight and advice to Discovery FSPs, Key Individual and Representatives.
    • The purpose of this role is to provide sound advice to FSPs in terms of legislation, to implement and maintain the FSP Governance Framework, be responsible for drafting and completion of all FSP reporting obligations, be responsible to manage and facilitate all FAIS-related regulatory engagements and submissions, attend to all legal obligations for FSPs, and ensure that the FSPs follow best practices and the compliance methodology and to manage and oversee the team.

    Areas of responsibility may include but not limited to

    • Provide advisory notes to business on regulatory compliance matters, engage stakeholders on resolution of compliance matters and interpretation of legislation, and draft and review of compliance guidance notes.
    • Develop and review company policies, frameworks and processes in line with compliance best practice protocols and ensure that they are appropriate for the business. 
    • Manage the regulatory profile of the business, engaging with stakeholders on any incidents (breaches and exposures), ensure that remedial action plans are implemented and tracked to completion, and to regularly engage with other assurance provider functions.
    • Manage the licensing requirements for FSPs, engage stakeholders and provide guidance and support to ensure licensing requirements are met timeously, monitor compliance with license conditions and restrictions and facilitate submissions to the regulator. 
    • Facilitate the drafting of legal opinions and sign-off, vetting of contracts, including consulting with legal firms as and when required, draft and/or review and obtain sign-off of responses for submission to the regulator and attend to the drafting of exemption applications to regulatory bodies.
    • Design, review and sign-off compliance documents as and when required. 
    • Keep abreast of regulatory developments and changes in the financial services industry, with particular focus on FAIS and all subordinated legislation.
    • Analyse regulatory changes and facilitate requests for comments on new and amended legislation.
    • Communicate regulatory requirements to stakeholders; and provide guidance and support on new and amended legislation.
    • Complete impact assessments and conduct workshops on new and amended legislation; and track implementation thereof.  
    • Manage all regulatory engagements and interact directly with the regulatory and/or industry bodies on complex compliance queries, non-compliance issues, and fines and penalties.
    • Facilitate meeting interactions with the relevant business stakeholders and the regulatory and/or industry bodies; ensure that questionnaires and surveys are timeously completed by the FSPs.
    • Manage and oversee submissions to the regulator such as but not limited to annual financial statements, payment of annual levies, etc. and ensure timeous submission to the regulator.
    • Responsible for drafting and review of all FSP reports to various committees, regulator and/or industry bodies.
    • Provide comprehensive reports and feedback to senior management and committees.
    • Manage and oversee projects such as new business initiatives and third-party interactions as and when required.
    • Manage and oversee the outputs of the team, to guide and motivate team members to achieve a common goal, setting objectives for the team and supporting them to ensure that the team’s annual objectives are met.
    • Build, develop and maintain strong cross-functional relationships with the key internal and external stakeholders relevant to the functional area and / or area of specialisation to assess and anticipate emerging risk areas across FSPs.

    Education and Experience

    • 5 years’ of working experience in a financial services compliance role in the application of FAIS within the FSPs as well as thorough understanding of the legislation.
    • At least 4-5 years’ experience in managing a team.
    • Relevant tertiary education
    • Recognised compliance qualification from accredited institution (Advantageous)
    • Member of Compliance Institute of South Africa and/or Financial Planning Institute would be advantageous.

    Skills and Knowledge

    • Detailed knowledge of local (South African) legislation relating to financial services and able to interpret and apply legislation, including, but not limited to the following: FAIS, POPIA, Insurance Act.
    • Sound understanding of compliance methodology, working knowledge of all elements comprising.
    • Problem solving skills and conflict-management of situations in a constructive and professional manner.
    • Ability to make rational judgements from the available information and analysis and provide considered and consistent advice.
    • Strong communication, reporting and presentation skills.
    • Ability to work as a team, understand the impact of decisions and be confident enough to raise concerns within the team and to senior management.
    • Strong research ability and attention to detail.
    • Detailed and technical expertise in the operation and governance requirements of FSPs.
    • Develop an effective network with business representatives and to build the necessary trust relationship with business representatives.
    • Writes in a well-structured and logical way – must have ability to write and review compliance policies and draft compliance guidance notes and reports with detail required to inform the business of regulatory requirements and potential impacts.
    • Able to work well under pressure.
    • Efficient time management skills, including quick turnaround time on quality work.
    • Foster a positive work environment that promotes employee satisfaction and retention.

    Lead Data Scientist - AI

    Key purpose

    • Lead the delivery of a variety of AI projects and ensure they align with the organization’s strategic goals. You will work closely with cross-functional teams and executives to ensure that projects are completed on time, within scope and budget, and meet the highest quality standards. Your work will directly impact product offerings, and operations and servicing quality.

    Key Outputs

    Delivery management and stakeholder engagement

    • Engage with diverse teams for driving the delivery of projects, including: the users of products that the team builds, executives, operations teams, knowledge management teams, systems and architecture teams.
    • Ensure the successful end-to-end delivery of data science projects which meet both functional and non-functional requirements.
    • Monitor project progress and performance, implementing corrective actions as needed.

    Technical AI and product decision making

    • Lead a team of data scientists, engineers and developers in building sophisticated data science, NLP, and AI products.
    • Oversee the design and implementation of these products from prototype to deployment and scaling, making the final technical decisions.
    • Foster a culture of scientific decision-making, prioritizing research and experimentation.
    • Ensure the team remains well-read and informed about the cutting edge in foundational and applied AI.
    • Participate in pair-programming and code reviews as needed.
    • Advocate for the needs to the team and product-delivery with respect to large-scale platform and Group technology decisions.

    Influence and align to Group-wide strategies

    • Collaborate with senior managers and technical partners to identify and prioritise business problems that can be solved with LLMs and NLP methodologies
    • Create evidence-driven business cases for investment in LLM and NLP innovation
    • Lead international working groups to ensure the sharing of and alignment to best practices in data science and AI practice.
    • Support other data science and AI teams in the Discovery Group with direction and advice.
    • Function as a senior advisor regarding the value and risks of AI at Group Exco and Board levels.
    • Build relationships with external industry, academic, and NGO, and governmental organizations for mutual benefit.

    AI governance

    • Ensure alignment to the highest privacy and data governance standards across all projects.
    • Contribute to Group policies regarding privacy and data governance.
    • Actively participate in Responsible AI working groups

    Team leadership

    • Oversee a team of ~12 data scientists, engineers and developers (permanent staff and contractors) at the forefront of LLM research and implementation.
    • Coach team members to maximize their potential and project progress.
    • Prioritize career development, understanding personal and professional goals, and creating opportunities to achieve them.
    • Set up mentoring opportunities internally and externally to aid in team members’ career development.
    • Set challenging goals for team members which are aligned with personal and project objectives. Provide continuous feedback regarding performance towards these goals.

    Experience, qualifications, and mandatory requirements

    • Post-graduate degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Statistics, Applied Maths or a related field.
    • 8+ years of experience in data science, with a focus on natural language processing (NLP) and LLMs.
    • 4+ years of experience leading a team of data scientists.
    • 1+ years of technical experience with LLMs and GenAI.
    • Proven track record of leading successful projects from conception to deployment.
    • Strong programming skills (preferably Python) and experience with models like the GPTs, LLaMA, Gemini etc.
    • Excellent problem-solving and project management skills with the ability to work in a fast-paced and fast-changing environment.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

    Advantageous:

    • Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS, GCP, or Azure.
    • Publications or presentations at conferences or industry events.
    • Experience in a leadership role within a consulting, research, or development team.

    Machine Learning Engineer

    Key Purpose

    • This ML Engineer is responsible for designing, building, managing, and continuously improving the operational processes that support the deployment and maintenance of actuarial, machine learning, and other decision-support models. The role involves end-to-end project planning, cross-functional collaboration with actuarial, data science, analytics, and business teams, and delivering insights into process efficiency across business areas. It also includes reporting on the design, progress, and performance of models and related business processes to drive operational excellence and informed decision-making.

    Areas of responsibility may include but are not limited to 

    • Design and create implementation and testing processes for models in both a traditional and ML framework to ensure business decisions can be actioned quickly and effectively.
    • Assist with the design and integration of traditional models and processes into cloud-based platforms like DataBricks to utilise additional functions and better performance.
    • Responsible for deploying rating and logic engines using proprietary software, ensuring accurate implementation and seamless integration into production environments.
    • Project planning and collaboration with actuarial, data science, underwriting, operational and system teams to ensure a smooth implementation process that reduces risks and achieves the required outcomes.
    • Frequent monitoring and reporting on the progress and performance of existing models and processes, as well as presenting the design for new processes to upper management.
    • Creation of automated processes and reports to reduce manual intervention and flag any areas of concern as they arise.
    • Assessment of the efficiency and effectiveness of business processes through data analytics to identify any areas for improvement or cost savings.
    • Implementation of pricing changes in existing models on a frequent basis, to ensure that changes in our pricing structure and strategies can be quickly actioned.
    • Creation of new tools and processes that can be used to reduce manual intervention and turnaround time of our client support teams.

    Skills and Knowledge:

    • Modelling skills preferred (Basic)
    • Programming Skills: SQL, Python (Intermediate)
    • Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint and Word) (Advanced)

    Education and Experience

    Education:

    • Matric (Essential)
    • Honours degree in Actuarial Science and/or Mathematical Statistics/ Computer Science or Data Science (Essential)
    • Min 3-5 completed CT subjects if Actuarial Degree (Advantageous)

    Minimum Experience:              

    • At least 1-3 years’ experience within a data driven industry
    • Experience with Databricks
    • Experience with Azure ML solutions
    • Experience with WTW Software (e.g., Radar Live) (advantageous)
