The Safety Officer is a legal appointment in terms of regulation 2.17.4 of the Minerals Act. The Role is responsible for the development, implementation and management of safety and risk control programmes, as well as ensuring legal compliance and provision of safety and reporting service to the Operational Unit or Area

• Facilitate accident investigation
• Carry out statutory inspections
• Compile safety reports
• Check compliances to safety system
• Check corrective action status

Safety and Risk Control

• Negotiates responses and safety targets
• Relays departmental concerns
• Represents the employees
• Make recommendations
• Provide safety statistics
• Represents operational Area needs

Manager/Engineering

• Negotiate safety policy and procedures and action plan
• Provides safety related technical support to Operational Area
• Joint decisions regarding safety targets for operational area
• Joint review and action plans relating to incidents

Chief Safety Officer

• Provides direction
• Discuss incidents investigation and recommendation
• Feedback on performance results
• Communicate ideas
• Explain new programmes and initiatives

External relationships

• Shares understanding of safety standards and ideas
• Ensure uniformity in approach
• Operational Unit Inspector
• Provides progress reports
• Assist with investigations
• Accompanies on visits

Requirements
Qualifications, Experience, Knowledge and Skills

• Grade 12or Equivalent
• Technical Qualifications
• First Aid
• Computer literate (MS Office and Projects)
• COMSOC 1&11 or equivalent
• SAMTRAC
• IT IS/Train the Trainer

Experience

• 3 Years relevant mining/process/Engineering/Training Experience

Physical Requirements

• Certificate of fitness
