The uPhongolo Local Municipality is a Category B municipality located in the north of the Zululand District in KwaZulu-Natal. It lies adjacent to the Swaziland Border and the Mpumalanga Province Border. It is one of five municipalities in the district. Main access to the municipality is via the N2 from Gauteng in the north-west and Durban in the south.
Task Grade 14 of a Grade 2 Local Authority (R532 521.21 R691 270.92 p.a) plus Travelling and Cellphone allowance as per approved council policy and normal fringe benefit applicable to Local Government.
KEY REQUIREMENTS:
Grade 12, LLB (NQF Level 7) or any other related and equivalent qualification. Admission as an attorney will be added advantage. Valid drivers license. Relevant 3 years legal and labour relations experience. Registered member of a legal practice in S.A.

KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS:
Provide critical legal counsel and litigation management to ensure the municipality and its entities operate within constitutional and statutory frameworks. Provide employment law support to the Municipality and Municipal Entities. Providing advice or formal legal opinions on employment law matters to the Municipality and Municipal Entities. Drafting and vetting of by-laws, contracts and other legal instruments. Conducting research and training on employment law. Providing legal support to council committees. Institutes, defends and conducts litigation in the Lower Courts, Labour and High Courts, Supreme Court of Appeals and Constitutional Courts. Provide memorandum of advise and opinion on general litigation matters. Provide an effective and responsive municipal prosecution service. Guides the Municipality in erforming its constitutional, statutory and common law duties. Liaises with private/ public bodies and individuals on legal matters. Attends Court with the Municipality's Attorneys or Advocates on trials or applications. Performs administrative functions. Considers and recommends the granting or denial of indemnity to employees facing criminal actions.
