    Lecturer

    Main Objectives

    • All academics are responsible for disseminating knowledge (teaching and learning), creating knowledge (research), engaging in community engagement (praxis), and recognising differences in the execution of these responsibilities across the various Departments and Faculties.  Academics are also expected to assume administrative, management, and/or leadership duties at the departmental, Faculty, and/or University level and contribute to their profession.
    • For this role, the incumbent is expected to provide academic leadership across teaching, research, and community engagement. There are three main integrated objectives listed separately: 

    Engaged Teaching and Learning:

    • Collaborate with academics and academic departments to strengthen the quality, rigour, and coherence of institutional external engagement through Service-Learning (SL) programmes, including the design and delivery of short courses in Service-Learning, engaged research, digital storytelling, and social innovation.
    • Teach on the Postgraduate Diploma in Higher Education Community Engagement (PG Dip HECE).
    • Contribute to the implementation of monitoring and evaluation (M&E) support strategies for SL, including institutional reporting on SL at Rhodes University.

    Engaged Research:

    • Work in partnership with academics and academic departments to enhance the quality an impact of engaged research that advances societal benefit and public value.

    Lead, promote and support local transdisciplinary research initiatives, with a particular focus on social innovation and local economic development.

    • Make critical and original contributions to community engagement scholarship at national and international levels through the generation and dissemination of community-engagement knowledge (with a strong emphasis on social and economic development), including public scholarship (e.g., newspaper articles), peer-reviewed journal publications, and conference presentations.

    Community Engagement:

    • Manage the Rhodes University Social Innovation Hub within RUCE, including the provision of accredited short courses for academics, students, and community partner organisations, e.g. digital storytelling.
    • Participate in the RU Masakhe Economic Development Stakeholder Committee, providing administrative and strategic support to the Director: Community Engagement for this city-wide initiative.
    • Work with academics to theorise social innovation and enterprise development, and to contribute to the scholarly body of knowledge in these fields.
    • Promote the integrated praxis of CE with academics and students.

    The Job Requirements

    • A Master’s Degree in a relevant discipline, preferably Humanities or Social Science (must be prepared to register for a PhD)
    • Experience in Community Development (CD) and Community Engagement (CE) (Service Learning,  Digital Storytelling and Social Innovation)
    • Tutoring, facilitation, or conference presentation experience required. No teaching experience is required.
    • Experience in conducting Community-Based Participatory Research
    • Ability to teach diverse groups in the University and the broader community  
    • No research supervision is required.
    • Some administrative experience, albeit in informal contexts (e.g., student or sports clubs), and work experience.

    Re-Advertisement Intellectual Property & Technology Transfer Administrator (3 Year Contract)

    Main Objectives

    • To provide specialised administrative and legal-process support to the Technology Transfer Office, with particular focus on Intellectual Property portfolio administration, legal regulatory reporting, liaison with attorneys, law firms and external stakeholders, while also providing comprehensive general administrative support across all operational activities of the Technology Transfer Office.

    This is achieved through:

    • Administering the National Intellectual Property Management Office System in accordance with legislative, policy, and reporting requirements.
    • Maintaining, updating, and ensuring the integrity of the Intellectual Property portfolio database, including accurate data capture for reporting, audit, and decision-making purposes.
    • Providing comprehensive general administrative support across all operational activities of the Technology Transfer Office, including document filing, scheduling, correspondence, and record-keeping.
    • Supporting communication and stakeholder-engagement activities of the Technology Transfer Office in collaboration with internal and external partners.
    • Administrative legal asset management and liaising professionally with attorneys, law firms, regulatory bodies, and other stakeholders within the national and international innovation ecosystem.

    The Requirements

    •  A grade 12 qualification plus approximately 2 years relevant experience, where such experience includes:-
    • At least 2 years’ experience in an administrative, computerised, deadline-driven environment
    • Legal and professional document management and record-keeping
    • Diary and deadline management, including minute-taking
    • Data capturing and maintenance of databases or registers
    • Experience with financial systems, invoice processing, and cost tracking
    • Exposure to budgets and processing of invoices
    • A paralegal or legal secretarial qualification would be an added advantage.
    • Experience working in a law firm or legal services environment would be an advantage

    Senior Administrator (Grade 11)

    Main Objectives

    • Overall responsibility to the HoDs for administration and financial administration in the Department of Primary and Early Childhood Education and the Department of Secondary and Post-School Education.  
    • Will manage the administrative and support staff of the two departments, including the resource centre support staff, ICT support technician (concerning their responsibilities within the department), and temporary and permanent administrative staff working in research and teacher development projects in the departments.
    • Responsible for the management of student and academic administration, management of the quality maintenance processes (including examinations and marks), and overall responsibility for the administration and maintenance of the departmental buildings and assets.  

    The Requirements

    A Bachelor's Degree (NQF level 7) or equivalent with approximately 3 years’ relevant experience, where such experience includes: -

    Previous administrative experience within a computerised environment includes good organisational and planning skills, problem-solving, and time-management skills.

    • Previous financial administration experience
    • Knowledge of financial systems and processes
    • At least 1 year of supervision experience.

    Senior Lecturer/Lecturer

    Main Objectives

    • All academics are responsible for the dissemination of knowledge (teaching and learning), the creation of knowledge (research), and community engagement, recognising that these responsibilities are executed differently across the various departments and Faculties. Academics are also expected to assume some administrative, management and/or leadership duties at the departmental, Faculty, and/or University level.
    • In addition, Senior Lecturers and Lecturers are to provide academic leadership in the following areas: teaching and learning; research and community engagement; and contribute towards the governance of the institution. This leadership contribution at these levels should be evidenced at the departmental, Faculty, and institutional levels.

    The Requirements
    Lecturer: 

    • At least an LLM degree preceded by a LLB degree from a South African university.
    • Some teaching experience, where such experience may include tutoring and facilitation experience.
    • Ability and interest to teach in the following disciplinary areas: Mercantile Law, where such may include but are not limited to competition law, company law, commercial law, tax law, banking law and IP law.
    • Some evidence and experience in conducting research, which may include research outputs, conference attendance and presentations, supervision of fourth-year LLB research papers, and supervision of LLM students, would be an advantage.
    • Track record of administration, management and/or leadership roles (leadership roles may be informal)
    • For those applicants who have NOT pursued an academic career trajectory, no research supervision required

    Senior Lecturer: 

    • At least an LLD/PhD (Law) degree preceded by an LLM and LLB degree from a South African university.
    • Minimum 5 years of teaching experience in a university.
    • Ability and interest to teach in the following disciplinary areas: Mercantile Law, where such may include but are not limited to competition law, company law, tax law, commercial law, banking law and IP law.
    • Evidence of demonstrable research experience, which may include research outputs, conference attendance and presentations and supervision of postgraduate students to completion.
    • Teaching experience at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels is required.

    For those applicants who have NOT pursued an academic career trajectory, information and evidence must be provided of:

    • Good professional track record.
    • Strong track record of training and mentoring of junior staff.
    • Supervision of junior staff, including candidate attorneys.
    • Research supervision at the Master's level is required.
    • Emerging national profile in the discipline.
    • Demonstrated research supervision ability, for example, as a research project editor and research coordinator of relevant legal research.
