    Senior Manager: Centre for African Business

    Job description

    Job Specification

    • The Centre for African Business (CAB) is a new initiative in the Johannesburg Business School (JBS) located within the College of Business & Economics (CBE). The Centre aims to contribute towards making the University of Johannesburg’s business school recognised for excellence in management and leadership capacity building in Africa and internationally.
    • The CABs principle activity will be, among other things, to develop and publish teaching Case Studies.
    • CAB is committed to delivering contextually relevant case studies and is committed to the decolonisation of teaching, learning and the broader curriculum – using Africa-specific examples and outputs.
    • The Centre will run various events (seminars, workshops and short courses), short courses and immersions, linked to the research outputs and geared toward driving the Pan-African agenda and strategy of the Johannesburg Business School and the College of Business and Economics at large.
    • The Centre will collaborate widely with other centres at the University of Johannesburg and beyond, seeking partnerships with similar centres of African business and networks of experts.

    The incumbent will be expected to:

    • To develop and publish teaching Case Studies.
    • Manage researchers, case study writers within and outside UJ.
    • Coordinating research output and case studies from CAB.
    • Managing and building professional network of associates for JBS and CAB.
    • Building a productive pipeline of case studies and articles.
    • Contribute regularly to thought leadership in media and publications.
    • Design and coordinate learning immersions in South Africa and the continent of Africa.
    • Assist in generating funds for CAB and building partnerships.
    • Budgeting and planning.
    • Building collaborative and nurturing networks and partnerships around case studies and research outputs.
    • Plan, organise and manage events, seminars, workshops, short courses and immersions within CAB.
    • Running case study workshops and regular seminars.
    • Engage with international students and facilitate discussions and events with students around African business.
    • Conduct research and regularly publish in accredited academic journals.
    • Monitor research output within CAB.
    • Keep abreast with latest developments in area of expertise.
    • Build and maintain strategic partnerships within the university and externally.
    • Manage budget process, prepare budget according to strategy, capture and submit.
    • Monitor, analyse and interpret expenditure against budget and/or funding and advice on both strategic and prudent budget maintenance.
    • Liaise with all relevant stakeholders relating to budgeting and proper utilisation and forecasting of such.
    • Undertake any other responsibilities, which will be given from time to time.

    Minimum Requirements:

    • A relevant Master’s Degree on NQF 9 level (candidates with exceptional experience, who are busy with their Master’s Degree will also be considered).
    • Experience in Business Case Study Writing and learning is essential.
    • Completed training or educational certificates/diplomas in Case Study writing and teaching.
    • Familiar with the processes and channels of case outputs, exposure and publications.
    • Work and experience in/at a business school.
    • Experience in running programmes, workshops and seminars in and across Africa.
    • Networks in business, policy circles and academia across Africa and global markets.
    • Experience in budgeting, planning etc.
    • A healthy publication record and research output that spans academia, applied research and the media.
    • A keen interesting in African contextual issues and knowledge of the commercial environment and players

    Skills/Competencies:

    • Proven ability to think critically, analytically and laterally across disciplines and sectors (transdisciplinary).
    • Fluent in written and oral English communication.
    • Management and coordination skills and experience are essential.
    • Independent worker, appreciate and work with cross-disciplines.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in academic English.
    • Good time management skills.
    • Good planning and organising skills.
    • Good interpersonal skills.
    • Good listening skills.
    • Good financial management and budgeting skills.

    RECOMMENDATIONS:

    • A relevant Doctoral Degree (on NQF 10 level).
    • Previous lecturing experience.
    • Experience as a Researcher.
    • The ability to actively undertake research, which could be published in high quality academic journals.
