    Senior Manager: Centre for African Business

    Job description

    Job Specification

    • The Centre for African Business (CAB) is a new initiative in the Johannesburg Business School (JBS) located within the College of Business & Economics (CBE). The Centre aims to contribute towards making the University of Johannesburg’s business school recognised for excellence in management and leadership capacity building in Africa and internationally.
    • The CABs principle activity will be, among other things, to develop and publish teaching Case Studies.
    • CAB is committed to delivering contextually relevant case studies and is committed to the decolonisation of teaching, learning and the broader curriculum – using Africa-specific examples and outputs.
    • The Centre will run various events (seminars, workshops and short courses), short courses and immersions, linked to the research outputs and geared toward driving the Pan-African agenda and strategy of the Johannesburg Business School and the College of Business and Economics at large.
    • The Centre will collaborate widely with other centres at the University of Johannesburg and beyond, seeking partnerships with similar centres of African business and networks of experts.

    The incumbent will be expected to:

    • To develop and publish teaching Case Studies.
    • Manage researchers, case study writers within and outside UJ.
    • Coordinating research output and case studies from CAB.
    • Managing and building professional network of associates for JBS and CAB.
    • Building a productive pipeline of case studies and articles.
    • Contribute regularly to thought leadership in media and publications.
    • Design and coordinate learning immersions in South Africa and the continent of Africa.
    • Assist in generating funds for CAB and building partnerships.
    • Budgeting and planning.
    • Building collaborative and nurturing networks and partnerships around case studies and research outputs.
    • Plan, organise and manage events, seminars, workshops, short courses and immersions within CAB.
    • Running case study workshops and regular seminars.
    • Engage with international students and facilitate discussions and events with students around African business.
    • Conduct research and regularly publish in accredited academic journals.
    • Monitor research output within CAB.
    • Keep abreast with latest developments in area of expertise.
    • Build and maintain strategic partnerships within the university and externally.
    • Manage budget process, prepare budget according to strategy, capture and submit.
    • Monitor, analyse and interpret expenditure against budget and/or funding and advice on both strategic and prudent budget maintenance.
    • Liaise with all relevant stakeholders relating to budgeting and proper utilisation and forecasting of such.
    • Undertake any other responsibilities, which will be given from time to time.

    Minimum Requirements:

    • A relevant Master’s Degree on NQF 9 level (candidates with exceptional experience, who are busy with their Master’s Degree will also be considered).
    • Experience in Business Case Study Writing and learning is essential.
    • Completed training or educational certificates/diplomas in Case Study writing and teaching.
    • Familiar with the processes and channels of case outputs, exposure and publications.
    • Work and experience in/at a business school.
    • Experience in running programmes, workshops and seminars in and across Africa.
    • Networks in business, policy circles and academia across Africa and global markets.
    • Experience in budgeting, planning etc.
    • A healthy publication record and research output that spans academia, applied research and the media.
    • A keen interesting in African contextual issues and knowledge of the commercial environment and players

    • The Johannesburg Business School (JHB Business School) is one of the Schools within the College of Business & Economics. The School is actively recruiting for a Head: Executive Education and Programmes to join its dynamic team.
    • The Head of Executive Education and Programmes will work to establish and to support the strategic and operational priorities of JHB Business School program. S/he will undertake a variety of activities as JHB Business School launches and executes Executive Education programs, S/he will work collaboratively with the entire JHB Business School team – in the School, the College of Business & Economics and in UJ – to bring this exciting program to life.

    Responsibilities:

    • Work closely with College and staff to develop and to deliver a portfolio of degree Executive Education programs and to facilitate collaboration pre-, post-, and during programs.
    • Assuming responsibility for Business Development.
    • Building client base.
    • Identify, develop, and manage relationships with clients seeking to build the capacity of leaders within their organization through Executive Education.
    • Oversee program design and implementation in partnership with a team of individuals focused on the financial, operational, and administrative aspects, with keen attention to and the responsibility for success in both content delivery and program logistics.
    • Manage and roll out open and customized programmes.
    • Guide the development of admissions criteria and processes.
    • Develop proposals and budgets and contribute to communication materials to market the program to prospective organizations.
    • Market the school and its programmes.
    • Structure and contribute to the design (or manage design) of programmes.
    • Recruit faculty and other teaching-related staff and support the courses’ content development process.
    • Develop and execute monitoring and evaluation processes to track programmatic data and to apply lessons learned to future programs.
    • Play an active role in building community among Executive Education participants during programs and sustaining alumni relations.
    • Act as an administrative and logistical liaison for staff, faculty, and participants during program execution.
    • Serve as a key strategist for expanding the current portfolio of residential training programs and planning for expansion into online Executive Education modalities.
    • Assist in generating funds for the School and building partnerships.

    Minimum Requirements:

    • Preferably an MBA or equivalent Degree (on NQF 9 level).
    • At least 3-5 years of management experience in a director-level position required, ideally within a Higher Education environment.
    • Knowledge of the local and international business environment.
    • Strong network in and out of private sector.
    • Strong network in the public sector and insight into the public sector dynamics.
    • Knowledge and experience in working in executing education in Africa and beyond.
    • Demonstrated experience in business development, complex sales, and strategic partnerships development required.
    • Demonstrated experience in management consulting or professional services industries.
    • Fund-raising experience.
    • Business acumen.
    • Executive education design training and experience.

    • The incumbent will be responsible to manage the marketing, branding, online strategy and communication of the School. His/her duties will include the following:
    • To plan, implement and control and evaluate internal marketing and communication activities within the School.
    • Engage on brand strategy and marketing strategy within the School and UJ.
    • To position the School among relevant stakeholders and build a favourable public profile.
    • To implement internal marketing communication initiatives
    • Manage and roll out Online and blended learning.
    • Manage online outputs and learning with the departments of the School.
    • Build an Online strategy.
    • Update and manage content of the School’s website that is appropriate for all targeted audiences.

    Minimum Requirements:

    • An Honour's degree (on NQF 8 level) in Marketing/Communication.
    • A valid Code B (formerly Code 08) driver’s licence.
    • Operational-level experience in marketing and communication (three to five years).
    • Experience in marketing, branding and advertising.
    • Deep understanding of Brand Strategy.
    • Good understanding of the environment and networks and mediums of marketing: from broadcast, to print to social media etc.
    • Training and experience in the above-mentioned mediums.
    • Deep understanding of Online and experience in running or launching online education – preferably in the business school.
    • Strong business network.
    • Deep understanding of SA and African business education.
