    PUBLIC HEALTH TECHNICAL SPECIALISTS

    Job description

    Health Systems Trust (HST) wishes to appoint two Public Health Technical Specialists to provide technical input for a broad range of research projects and assist with building research capacity among the Unit’s staff, in line with the organisation’s goal of building an equitable, effective and efficient national health system in South Africa and the region.

    The incumbent will be expected to be based in the Midrand office; however, consideration will be given for the incumbent to be based in the Cape Town or Durban offices.

    This is a fixed-term contract position, renewable based on funding.

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Provide technical leadership and support in the HSR Unit
    • Participate in and oversee the design, securing, resourcing, implementation and successful completion of research projects
    • Support the Director and work closely with the Programme Manager, through:
      • fundraising, including proposal development
      • knowledge management and translation
      • quality assurance of HSR outputs and products
      • planning and budgeting
    • Contribute to engaging with funders and stakeholders
    • Provide public health technical support to researchers and staff
    • Contribute to knowledge management within the organisation and promoting collaboration with other HST activities
    • Represent HST in public forums, meetings and conferences
    • As a senior member of the team, contribute to the overall leadership of HST.

    EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS AND EXPERIENCE:

    • A relevant Master’s or PhD degree, with extensive experience in health services management, support and development, public health activities, health systems research, epidemiology, human resources management and/or health economics
    • A Public Health Medicine Specialist (FCPHM) degree would be advantageous.
    • HIV clinical or research experience would also be particularly advantageous.
    • At least five years’ experience working in the South African public health system and health services environment, district health systems strengthening, primary health care, disease programmes, operational research, including quantitative methods and epidemiology and project management
    • Strong information technology skills and familiarity with spreadsheets, statistical packages and databases
    • General management experience.

    REMUNERATION

    A salary package commensurate with the successful candidate’s experience and qualifications and in line with HST’s Job Grading System will be offered.
