    Manager I: Technical Manager

    Job description

    The Department of Zoology has a long-standing reputation for excellence in tertiary education and has an established   research record (67% of academic staff members hold NRF rating). Research focus areas are toxicology, fish parasitology, molecular genetics and systematics, fish histology and histopathology, cave and groundwater ecology and biodiversity and comparative respiration morphology.

    Responsibilities: 

    • Responsible for effectively running the Aquarium Research Facility of the department
    • Lecture to Magister level students in Tutored Master’s degree in Aquatic Health
    • Lecturing to Honours students in basic skills modules such as 4X4 driving, boat handling and basic maintenance
    • Assisting postgraduate students with experimental design in the Aquarium
    • Acquisition of stock for the aquarium
    • Assisting post graduate students during field work (sleep away from home frequently)
    • Maintenance of research vehicles and boats
    • Administration as required by the HOD
    • Participate in existing research groups and study towards a further degree
    • Conduct research and provide support to postgraduate students.
    • Network with industry and research institutions.
    • Participate in community service

    Minimum Requirements

    • MSc in water related topic and ready to start a PhD
    • Proven previous experience with keeping fish (freshwater and marine)
    • A valid driver’s licence and skippers licence
    • Willingness to participate in post graduate supervision

    • A team player with a passion for student training and research
    • A problem solver

    Recommendations:

    • Natural inclination to maintenance and safety
    • First Aid qualification
    • Willingness to attract external funding
    • Willingness to publish regularly in ISI rated journals
    • Willingness to submit documents for NRF rating when a PhD has been obtained
