BI Data Architect at Discovery Limited

The Business Intelligence (BI) Data Architect is responsible for the design, implementation and support of all BI Data Assets. The right individual will possess knowledge of all stages of BI project work (logical data model design, physical data model design, implementation, testing and deployment). The BI Data Architect should have a firm grasp of BI implementation methodologies and will have had in-depth experience with the Microsoft BI Stack with an emphasis on Data Modelling, Data Governance, Data Security and Master Data Management. Knowledge and experience in other aspects of BI (ETL and Reporting) will be an added advantage.

The Data Architect utilizes their passion for data delivery to bring about new ideas and improvement on existing solutions. The Architect utilizes strong data management, integration, and analytical skills to support BI initiatives in a Customer Centric environment. This position will work with IT professionals to ensure all data is understood and translated accurately, through defined Governance processes, to drive informed decision making.

Areas of responsibility may include but not limited to

• Strong attention to detail and ability to work with a variety of clients including executive and operational
• Communicate and collaborate with teams to action requirements and deliver the required Data solutions
• Interact with systems analysts, architects, developers and development managers to understand source structures and information
• Build effective relationships with key stakeholders
• Transform business requirements into Star Schema data models
• Conduct data analysis and data profiling.
• Facilitate definition of business key performance metrics.
• Documenting of technical specifications.
• Ensure that BI solutions meet business needs in totality.
• Perform thorough testing of outputs using SQL.
• Manage overall quality of final outputs delivered to business.
• Perform impact and gap analysis based on requirements
• Develop subject matter expertise in both business processes and data sources.
• Provide support to the development team members and analysts.
• Establish and maintain BI and general data standards, processes and procedures.
• Establish and Implement Data Governance frameworks/standards in alignment with Group policies and POPIA
• Manage timelines, communication and feedback to all stakeholders.
• Training of users and ongoing support
• Provide input on source system change impact on not just BI and reporting but also general business impact
• Recommend new solutions and enhancements to existing implementations
• Prior experience working in an agile, fast-paced team environment.
• Co-ordinate quality assurance and user acceptance testing (Unit and UAT)
• Implementation of a Data Warehouse from the ground up.

Personal Attributes And Skills

• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Must be able to present solutions and data storylines.
• Advanced SQL skills
• Experience in gathering and documenting technical requirements
• Experience in writing functional and technical specifications, process flows and source-to-target maps.
• Ability to understand entity-relationship diagrams, normalized and de-normalized structures
• Excellent planning, organizational, and time management skills
• Data modelling of the Data Warehouse (Kimball and/or Inmon)
• Using architecture tools such as Erwin Data Modeler
• Ability to work on Big Data technologies (e.g. Cloudera / Hadoop)

 

Education And Experience

• 10+ years’ experience in a Business Intelligence environment
• 6+ years’ experience in a Data Architecture in a corporate environment
• BCOM Informatics / BSC Computer Science or equivalent data qualification
• DMBOK certified will be advantageous
• Business Intelligence certifications will be an added advantage
• Implementation knowledge of Cloud based data solutions (eg. AWS, Azure
